AnotherOne Bites the Dust

It's funny, a little bit, as there has been lengthy discussion about the overlap of Long Island and Connecticut radio coverage. As this thread grows below, one of those CT signals that covers a good portion of LI has just changed formats. Kool 96.7, one of CT's last remaining oldies stations flipped a few minutes ago to 96.7 The Coast. Its an AC/Hot-AC station sort of thing. Lots of 70's and 80's AC though. I guess they just couldn't deal with the competition from AM 740's ecclectic and commercial free mix of oldies. Seriously, if anyone at WNYH is awake and aware of anything at all, you have an AM station with a Killer Signal that covers most of LI and a large part of Connecticut. The only other oldies stations around right now on Long Island are B-103 and WLNG. In CT I am only aware of WREF 850 with Scott Shannon's True Oldies Channel as I believe WDRC abandoned the oldies a while back too. IF WNYH can get their act together, forget about the block programming garbage and sell some ads for crying out loud, they could make it a very viable station. They could cater to Long Island and or Connecticut. Man, sometimes opportunity knocks, but I think in this case its pounding on the door.

I love oldies, but Kool 96.7 was nothing to write home about. I actually think the NEW format is better (and close to what I would have done with Island 94.3).

No great loss, KOOL was the kind of oldies station that gives oldies stations a bad name. 200 records "that tested well" burned to a crisp and cheap, tired imaging.

Sadly I find that I agree with you both. Coast don't seem half bad so-far. Notice that my original message was more of an appeal for WNYH to take action than it was a eulogy for Kool 96.7, besides, it was a CT station anyway. At least we still got our local Long Island Oldies station:)

WNYH could be so much, but in the end it will be a parking lot judging from what we have seen so far.

540 WLIE is the AM that could have been in the cat bird's seat with real oldies when 'CBS went away - especially after the power increase. They tried to do local talk and lost truckloads of money as the market just doesn't exist. After that, the pressure must have on to play it safe and let Business Radio play for airtime.

Speaking of B-103

I've been meaning to start a thread about B103, so I'll scratch it and use this one. I am not and have never been a big oldies fan, although at 44 I believe am in the right target demo for B103. I never listened to CBS-FM. That being said, I've been listening to B103 quite a bit lately and I LOVE IT. They play a great mix of music from the 60s and 70s. In the morning, The Wise Man and Frank make the morning fun and the banter between them is truly enjoyable. I've listened to WLNG on occasion and find that station to be a fun listen also.

So my question is, why would you put oldies on AM 740? Why do you need AM music in a genre where there is a quality FM signal in the same genre right next door? Do you think that adding 50s music will give it enough of a draw perhaps?

because WNYH would focus on music from the pre-Beatles days and not even touch the 70's. Love the 70's as I do, there is an abundance of stations playing 70's music and the 60's and 50's are being left behind.

Oldies is as fragmeted as any other format nowadays

Yes, also its important for B-103 to have some competition, otherwise it could become stale. WNYH with its signal could be a big contender in Connecticut as well. The only Oldies station in Connecticut right now is The True Oldies Channel which happens to be on AM 850, yep, another AM Station.

Re: Speaking of B-103

Actually 850 AM is not the only oldies station in Connecticut. It is the only oldies station in Fairfield County. There are two other oldies stations in Connecticut KOOL 101 in New London (100.9 FM) and WATR 1320 AM in Waterbury. WATR is a mixture of local music and The Jones Good Times Oldies Network. They don't play music 24/7 however. They have local talk 10AM-1PM and 6PM-7PM Monday-Friday and they have ethnic programming on Sundays 8AM-2PM, and their Saturday Morning DJ (10AM-12PM) still plays Swing, Standards, Jazz, etc). WATR is independently owned by the Gilmore Family. KOOL 101 is owned by Hall Communication Inc.

Thanks for the Update. Is KOOL 101 the station that plays sort of Light oldies? Also, glad to hear that local radio is still alive and well at WATR.

Which CT AM station is it with numerous towers that you can see heading East from Hartford Toward Waterbury on Route 84? I think there are one or two taller utility towers nearby as well.

And least we not forget Connecticut's "part-time oldies" station ... WOW-AM 600... no ...that's "Service 60"...WICC!!!

KOOL 101 is pretty mainstream oldies without fifties. WATR has served the WWII crowd for so long it's hard to imagine them going after baby boomers.

You'd be heading West, not East, from Hartford to Waterbury on I-84. You're probably seeing WLAT 910 in Farmington, which runs a four-tower directional pattern at night beamed mostly Southeast down Routes 9 and 91. Not far to the West is Rattlesnake Mountain, with channel 30 on one strobe tower and 61 on the slightly higher one.

That would be the one, and yes I did mean Heading west, because you can't see the Array when you are heading East. That Is why I felt the need to clarify heading from Hartford to Waterbury. You know what I meant at least. Anyhow, I always thought it was cool looking. Next time I'm up near Waterbury I'll have to check out WATR, because It don't have much of a signal at all down here on the Island.
