I haven't checked this part of the board in a while so it was interesting to see this. A family member works at the University of Chicago and is business manager for a group of scientists involved in research at the South Pole Radio Telescope the University operates their.
She got this note from a scientist a couple of days ago about their 4th of July celebration.
It's winter there, 24 hour a day darkness and on Sunday the temperature at the telescope was -100F.
"The 4th was a quiet affair down here. I think the highlight on the day
...was people sitting in the sauna at +200F and going out and running
around the Sth pole, as it was -100F. This is about the only out door
activity that went on. The "300 club" as it is called is a liberating
experience and seems a fitting way to celebrate freedom. Surprisingly, a
lot of people here do not go out side very often, so it really seemed to
lift their spirits to be able to something like that. Not my cup of tea
and walking out to work every day is enough for me."
I'll try to find out what if any radio reception is down there. They do have frequent aurora events, some of the photos I've seen are spectacular.
