FM antennas are so much easier than AM....setting up a mobile AM part 15 is almost a nightmare, but can be done. There are any number of radio shack goodies you can use, but if your tx came with a simple wire antenna, why not use that?If you want something a little more solid, yet small, Wavemach puts out a nice little rubber duckie, however it is usually built to tune on frequency. An adjustable FM transmitter would do well with it's supplied antenna.Carl
______________

Hi,

Carl has given some good advice, and I just want to add a little.

On 2 meters, hams often use a "quarter wave ground plane". This is a quarter wavelength vertical (about 30 inches for FM) mounted perpendicular to the body of the car. A magnetic base is usually used. The car body forms the ground plane. You might consider buying a 2 meter 1/4 wave "mag mount" and replacing the 19 inch radiator with a 30 inch whip. Don't get a 5/8 antenna because there is a tapped loading coil in the base and it won't tune to the FM band.

I am curious as to why you want to go mobile with your transmitter.

Perhaps from a van or SUV, you may wish to use your vehicles' power supply too (don't ask, I'm no mechanic!), and mounting a magnetic-mount whip on the van is a 1 second deal. It's an easy start to broadcasting in a mobile situation, such as broadcasting a game or a parade....Carl
______________

Re: ANtenna Ideas for Fm Mobile?

I use a Maxrad 6600 FM Transmit antenna with an EDM transmitter,
At home I place a screen under the antenna on the roof for a ground plane, and on the road I broadcast as I cruz HWY 15 to Vegas and while camping in the summer, and we take request off a family radio channel.
Coverage is very good along with a low SWR.
About 2 miles on the highway 1 in the City of coarse Your mileage may very!
Mine is cut to 98.3 but have transmitted on 95.3 while still maintaining a good SWR 1.1.4
Good antenna for under$80 with Mag Mount extra rods are only $10

There are Pirate radio broadcasters in NYC that broadcast from moving vehicles. It makes them much harder for the FCC to track down.

On a different note: When I was the Engineer at my college station, we used to broadcast the Homecoming Parade from within the Parade. We had a 12 volt tap on out Marti RPU, and rigged up a cigarette lighter adapter to power it. FOr the antenna, a slightly modified magnet mount whip right on top of the GM/Advisor's Suburban. Worked like a charm.

I actually know of an AM Broadcast station that used to use 87.9 FM as a short range RPU or IFB on remotes.
