Antenna TV debuts on Houston 39.2, January 1st.

Saw the commercial on 39.1 this evening. Antenna TV will begin broadcasting on 01-11-11 in Houston on 39.2 which is currently occupied by NBC's "Universal Sports" programming. Looking over the website, this will be something I'll watch. Reminds me of the way TV Land used to be. It is a nationwide rollout for Tribune, so be on the lookout for this in your market as well.

So is Universal Sports moving elsewhere (39.3 or some other station's subchannel) or is it disappearing from Houston altogether? My wife won't be happy, she enjoys their ice skating coverage, which has pretty much vanished from other sports channels.

I am taking my son skiing for the first time (he is only four) in January and we have been watching some of the skiing on Universal Sports so he can understand what it is he is supposed to be doing, since he won't be seeing any snow around here. Universal Sports is a great idea for a sub channel because it carries programming that gets very little coverage on other channels, including the cable channels. I don't imagine it gets very high ratings but it certainly is welcome over an infomercial channel.
I would expect that Comcast would find a way to still carry Universal Sports if Channel; 39 drops it since Comcast is taking over NBC Universal and I would think they would want to keep their network on the air in Houston. KIAH may be putting Antenna TV on 39.2 thinking that Comcast will carry it at the slot already used for 39.2 on cable, and add an extra slot of 39.3 on Comcast to carry Universal Sports. The carriage of some of the subchannels by Comcast (2.2, 2.3, 8.2, 8.3, 11.2, 13.2, 13.3, 39.2 are on Comcast in Houston) is one of the main reasons I subscribe to Comcast instead of AT&T U-verse in the first place. I don't think AT&T offers any of the subchannels.
On another note, I wonder when Fox will offer any subchannels on KRIV 26 or KTXH 20.

Don't know for sure, Frog, but the logical guess would be that it goes to KPRC or just vanishes altogether. Being an NBC offering, I'd think it would be a smart move to place it on 2.3 or an expansion to 2.4. I'm afraid that it will just vanish, and that your wife will be miffed. :D

Wasn't KBPX the low power translator for KPXB back in the analog days? I thought they gave up the translator because KPXB had become strong enough.

The translator wasn't needed anymore after the digital transition, since KPXB's digital tx is in Missouri City. The old analog tx was in Splendora.

According to postings on another forum, KBPX is now digital on RF 46 running The Country Network. Info at www.tcncountry.com

Website doesn't have KBPX as an affiliate yet, but their coverage map does show KABB in San Antonio as carrying the network on one of its subchannels.

Don't forget Telemundo KTMD is an NBC/Universal owned & operated station.

Good call Fred. I forgot about Telemundo. 47 has a blank channel at .4, IIRC and is running the same immigrant TV at 47.3 that also runs on 61.2. May be one of those.

None of NBC's Telemundo stations carry Universal Sports. I would not expect it to appear there.

Antenna TV will be on 39-2, and Universal Sports will most likely move to 39-3, just as it's going to on KRCW in Portland.

Are there any other cities besides Houston where NBC owns and operates the Telemundo affiliate but does not own and operate the NBC affiliate? IF KIAH decides not to continue with running Universal Sports, and there is no other station willing to run Universal Sports, I could see NBC carrying it on KTMD just to enusre an outlet in the large Houston market.

TMD O&Os with no corresponding NBC O&O:

KTMD Houston (US on KIAH - CW affiliate)
KVDA San Antonio
KBLR Las Vegas (US on KSNV - NBC affiliate)
KTAZ Phoenix
KNSO Fresno (US on KJEO-LD)
KDEN Denver (US on KUSA - NBC affiliate)
WNEU Boston (US on WZMY - MyTV affiliate)
KHRR Tucson
WKAQ Puerto Rico (US on WAPA - independent)

I just confirmed with KIAH that Universal Sports will be on 39.3.

Wonder what Comcast will have on 319...stay with 39.2 and run Antenna TV, or keep Universal Sports there, despite the move to 39.3? Or add a channel and run both?
