Anthony Gargano Off WPEN in Contract Conflict

WPEN host Anthony Gargano was off of WPEN on Tuesday 9/12 as he attempts to work out a contract resolution with Beasley.
It was announced by ALLCITY that Gargano would be joining their new digital venture "PHLY Sports", thus creating a conflict.
PHLY Sports will be similar to setups in Phoenix, Denver + Chicago which have a collection of writers + broadcasters covering that city's teams and games.

I never understood how Gargano has been able to hold his WPEN position while also hosting a national Saturday morning show on FOX Sports Radio. To me, hosting another radio show for another company would be more of a conflict that joining a podcast network startup.

Ya gotta clear these kinds of things. Maybe he long ago negotiated the Fox thing. Whatever. Doesn’t mean you get to go do whatever side hustle you want.

Except maybe Uber Eats. That might be totally safe.

John Kincade hosted a national CBS Sports Radio show while he worked for an ESPN radio affiliate, WCNN, in Atlanta. He actually switched from national ESPN radio to CBS Sports radio while working for WCNN.

He gave it up when he went to WPEN. I’m not sure if is was a requirement that he give it us as part of his new gig, or if he decides to since he was traveling to Atlanta most weekends while his daughter finished high school.

Yes, it was a requirement that he give up the CBS Sports Radio shift. Going head to head with an Audacy owned station and working part time weekends for Audacy owned CBS Sports Radio wasn’t going to happen.

That’s the difference with Gargano. Why would WPEN care if he works a weekend shift for Fox Sports radio? I know there is “The Gambler” in Philadelphia, but that’s not a real Station, and not a real competitor.

It happened with Kincade in Atlanta when he co-hosted a daily show on WCNN. The other major sports station in town was Audacy owned WZGC.

It was always weird when he would occasionally voice the hourly CBS Sports Minute that aired on the CBS Sports Radio Network and Audacy owned sports stations. Sometimes his segments would air on WZGC during his WCNN show.

PHLY Sports is intended to be a direct competitor to WPEN, in the same way that The Athletic was intended to be a competitor to the Inquirer (and a bunch of other big city newspapers).

That's why it's a bigger deal than working 3 hours on weekends with FSR. Most of the guys on FSR and ESPN Radio weekend shows are dudes who have a M-F show in some local market. They often mention their local station during their network shows.
