Anthony Gargano: Phillies Should DH Stairs in Game 3

He said this on TV rather than on the radio, but I think it's still relevant here because he's a radio guy.

Last night on Fox 29's post-game, Gargano lamented the poor hitting of Greg Dobbs as DH in Game 2, and said something like "look for Manuel to replace Dobbs with Matt Stairs as DH in Game 3."

Um, hello? Game 3 is in Citizens Bank Park, home of the National League Champion Philadelphia Phillies. There ain't no stinkin' DH in game 3. If you're a Phillies fan, you hope the Phillies don't play another game with a DH until next March. But not Gargano. Sheesh.

I'm sure you've never mis-spoken...

I'm just glad that we get to see actual baseball with the next 3 games being in a NL park.

That's not misspeaking, like he said "game 3" but meant "game 6." He named the starting pitcher in game 3 and said Charlie should DH Stairs against him. Also, if he's rooting for the Phillies he shouldn't be assuming there's a Game 6.

No, this was him really not knowing that there was no DH in a World Series game in a National League park.

i also heard howard "the king" eskin mention SEVERAL times yesterday that if you pinch hit for the DH, you lose the DH. that is of course totally inaccurate as the way you lose the DH is if the player who starts as the DH is moved to another position in the course of the game (i.e. if Dobbs was moved to 3rd last night or if Coste was moved to catcher on Wednesday). again that is not misspeaking, that's just a blatant lack of knowledge of the game.

I was giving you the benefit of the doubt, but I guess you guys aren't that bright. If you truly think that Gargano doesn't know that there is no DH in the NL park, I don't know what to say. When you get paid to talk for a living, incorrect statements will come out of your mouth.

As for Eskin's statement, I wouldn't have known if he was right or not. I don't watch the American League, hence I don't know the rule. This is a NL town, so I wouldn't expect that the sportstalk hosts are watching endless amounts of AL games.

After receiving 40 lashes with a wet noodle, I guess Gargano and Eskin each have to go back to 'Sports School' so they can learn every single rule in every sport...or maybe you guys can just slide in and take their places since you seem to know everything.

come on dude. be objective here. the DH rule wasn't just put in this year. it's been around a while. you don't have to watch that many games to know it, HECK all he needed to do was watch the Boston-Tampa ALCS, which should have been his duty considering the winner played the phils in the world series, and in at least one of those games the DH was pinch hit for. it's not like we're talking about some wacky sabermetrics deal here or something that nobody cares about. this is a fairly elementary baseball rule.

Knowing the DH rule in the middle of the World Series (or, better yet, simply knowing when it is in effect and when it isn't) is hardly "knowing every rule in every sport." It's a big rule in what is (or should be) the biggest sport in town this week. You talk sports for a living. You shouldn't know immediately that the DH disappears when you move to the NL park? Did Gargano not watch the Phillies host any interleague games this year? I guess he was watching Eagles mini-camp instead.

As for Eskin, that's slightly more complex, but it's a basic thing that he should know, that you can pinch hit for the DH so long as the DH is always the same spot in the line-up all game. Especially Eskin, whose entire show is centered around the pretense that he knows everything.

I heard Sean Hannity refer to Sarah Palin as Senator Palin. So, does this mean that Sean Hannity doesn't know that she is a Governor and not a Senator? People mis-speak all the time (and believe me, I'm not one to defend Sean Hannity, but everybody makes mistakes).

Show me someone on the radio who has NEVER screwed up, and I'll show you a robot.

who cares, Gargano sounds like a guy who should be selling produce in the Italian Market. Another ex-sportswriter who sucks on radio AND tv and crawls to sports radio to salvage a career.

on the other hand, i give major, major kudos to the WIP morning show this morning. they are doing as good a job as you can do capturing the mood after the debacle with the suspended game last night. WIP always does a good job in spots like this echoing the voice of the fan (other than Eskin), compared to many other sports stations hosts i've heard who tend to talk down the fans.

Boo + Cuzzin Joey would not approve with your terse comments regarding DA CUZ .

Its just unbelievable how bad the quality on WIP is. The day of game 5 of the World Series DA CUZ and Napnow were playing a computer similated game to see who would win. Da Cuz was acting out some adolescent fantasy doing the play by play with his thick South Philly drawl. It was incomprehendable to hear these clowns waste 4 hours on this nonsense when Game 5 of the World Series was 4-5 hours away. A few clicks up the dial The Fan 590 iN New York broke game 5 and the world series down to the bone.Mike Franseca and the NY callers were on a completely different intellectual plane in discussing a game not involving a NY team.

Gargano seems like a great guy but he really has no business doing what he is doing. The same can be said for most of WIP employees. The producers are horrible, it has to be the most unprofessional sports radio station in the country. They keep running these print hacks and ex ballplayers, who have no professional communication or radio background down our throats. Its unbelievable.

You were probably listening to Toronto's The Fan 590, or New York's WFAN 660. Or both.

And you were fired by WIP when?
