Any AM's available BESIDES 860?

Are there any AM signals licensed to the Phoenix metro that are dark or in play besides 860?

I know someone who is interested and has the means. Preferably with a strong signal in the East Valley.

No AM here has gone dark since 1947 - before most of the current ones even came on the air. But outside of the Clear Channel stations (KFYI, XTRA, and KOY) and KTAR, few even realize the other 18 Phoenix AM'ers are even on the air. They're non-factors except for a small core audience in some cases, notably KMVP (which we're talking about, of course), KKNT, KDUS, KPHX, and KFNN. The others are total non-entities. but I don't know if any are on the market.

Good luck. Most of the smaller stations (i.e. not KFYI or KTAR) have poor East Valley coverage at night. at least east of downtown Mesa or south of US 60. And those who do put a decent signal into that area (KDUS, KXAM, KSUN, KMIK) probably aren't worth much even if they are available.

You can't beat the whopping 52 watts at night from the lumberyard!

I'm sure Gumpdusky would entertain an offer--if the price is right.

The AMs with decent nighttime East Valley signals are: 550 KFYI, 620 KTAR, 1060 KDUS, 1310 KXAM, 1580 KMIK. None are officially for sale, though I'd wager that KMIK could be had for the right price. I'm not sure if KPXQ 1360 carries into the East Valley that well. They have license for 50K watts daytime, probably 1K night (could be wrong on that). In any case, they're a Salem teaching station and assuredly not for sale anyway. The rest of the AM signals have very serious nighttime East Valley deficiencies. 910 KGME nulls in Scottsdale / Carefee and has issues in Gilbert, east Mesa, etc. 960 KKNT pretty much dies east of Gilbert Rd. (if that far). And the list goes on....

KDUS is almost inaudible south of Elliot Rd. (Which is 1 mile south of the towers! I could completely null it out when I lived near 48th St. & Elliot) due to their extreme null to the south. That means that it loses most of Ahwahtukee and west Chandler (about 150,000 people in those areas alone).

KXAM has good East Valley coverage, even at 500 watts at night. Too bad it's a total waste of electricity and provides little, if any, actual service to anyone.

KMIK is definitely not for sale. The Radio Disney and ESPN Radio O&Os are not part of the ABC/Citadel merger and Disney is keeping all those stations. KMIK (and the other RD stations) doesn't need ratings and is in fact unratable since 90% of their audience is kids under 12 - at least those kids under 12 that know what the AM dial is. Radio Disney is just an advertising vehicle for the company.

Yeah. they run 1 kW at night with a highly-directional antenna that covers the central city well but not the outlying areas. They also null to the southwest so 860 could concievably be piggybacked with them.

50 kw on 1360 covers about as much ground as 5 kW on 550 or 620.

This is where all the stations transmit from (roughly):

West Valley
SW Phoenix: 860, 1230, 1480, 1540
Tolleson: 1010, 1190
Near-West Glendale: 1360

Central City
Near-NW Phoenix: 740, 910, 1280
Near-NE Phoenix: 620

North Valley
Far-North Phoenix: 960, 1510
Black Canyon City: 710
Cave Creek: 1100

East Valley
SE Phoenix: 550, 1400
SW Tempe: 1060
South-Central Scottsdale: 1440 (daytimer)
North-Central Mesa: 1310, 1580

If you aren't transmitting from or near the East Valley, your coverage won't be very good.

Just flip the switch. Worked for me.
