Any CA local newscasts not in HD?

I haven't had the opportunity to watch local newscasts in California's smaller TV markets (Chico, Bakersfield, San Luis Obispo, etc.) for a few years now, and am wondering if there are any newscasts that still broadcast in standard definition. To me, this is equivalent to a local newscast in black-and-white in 1970, long after most of the rest of the country has switched to color. However, with fewer ad Dollars in most markets (especially in smaller ones) in the last decade, I know the cost to update a local news set and equipment for a small market TV station can be overwhelming. So, as of March 2013, do any Cali TV stations still produce and broadcast their local news in standard definition? I don't mean public access or LPTV channels but regular, full-power commercial TV stations. Thanks!

I believe the question is whether small markets are doing HD news or not.

While the below stations broadcast in HD, the news broadcasts are still in SD:
  • KHSL (12) CBS
  • KNVN (24) NBC

Not sure about KRCR though.

Had a friend check KRCR, SD newscast as well.

Actually, KRCR's studio segments are 4x3 SD, but as of a few weeks ago, all graphics and everything shot outside the studio are in 16x9 HD.

KHSL/KNVN has produced their promos in HD for about a year, but their actual news broadcasts are in SD.

AKA, thanks for the correction.

A friend of mine in Chico told me all graphics and everything shot outside the studio is in HD AFTER I made my last post. :)

In my opinion, that puts them ahead of the game since it's clear their switchers, etc, are all setup and ready to go.

Just a quick point of clarification for the Bakersfield market:

KERO (ABC) is now producing their local newscasts in true HD. Following Scripps' purchase of KERO, late last year they upgraded the studio set, graphics packages, music, etc., dumped the existing station management, and of course began the HD newscasts. KERO now has the standardized uniform cookie-cutter look/identity of all the Scripps stations across the nation. KERO was the last station in the market to make the local HD jump. And they seem to have funneled in an abundance of new "fresh out of college" journalism students to cut their teeth in the reporting arena. Its always interesting to hear the numerous mispronunciations of local landmarks and institutions by all these new out-of-town "reporters". They are flubbing all over the place, which in my opinion, really diminishes the credibility of the station overall as a "local" resource...

I cannot disagree with your observation about KERO's green journalists. Local broadcast legend Burleigh Smith would probably roll in his grave if he could see the once great and awarded KERO News be reduced to an amatuer hour.

Bonten's KRCR Redding made the jump to full HD (720p) on Monday, April 22. The upgrade included a new graphics package, but surprisingly not a new set (of which both television news services in the market are in dire need). Sister station KCVU's 10 pm news broadcast is also in HD.

Any screen shots of the set? I'd be interested to see how bad it is.

Thanks very much to everybody for your postings over the last few months. It appears the dubious honor of largest market newscast in CA still in standard definition goes to KGPE, CBS 47, in Fresno. I wonder how much longer it'll be until they upgrade. And, to expand on my question, I wonder where the largest market newscast in standard definition in the USA is located?

I was told by a KGPE employee that they will be HD by the end of the year if not sooner and that Nexstar will be ramping up the news department but he/she was mum on a news department merger with KSEE.
