Any format holes?

Is there really any "format holes" in Los Angeles? What stations do you think would generate ratings and audiences if added to the market?

Bring Indie 103.1 back!!! ;D

Well, we could really use a AAA right about now...

Yes, agreed. A AAA station would be nice. Stupid KSWD was AAA......

80's is the only music formatic hole in this town. Movin's demos in the end proved that. Just think how well it could do if the format was programmed properly.

That was a loaded question, the part about 'generate ratings and audiences' (see the previous post). If there was such an easily recognizable format hole, it would have already been plugged. Try re-phrasing the question as '..., if done right, would generate ratings and audiences.'

I think the hole in LA is the one recently created by the new format making its rounds around the country; FM All-News. It seems to be doing well in San Francisco and DC. :)

It's not that AM All-News doesn't work, it does work as well as a Kia in getting you to work. But if you can have a BMW ... :D

Fm Talk - what used to be on KLSX. If the station had the same marketing strategy as AMP radio, and if they added Playboy radio to their lineup, they would kill.

How about anything English? It is so amazing that the second largest city in the U.S.is so saturated with so many foreign language radio stations and so few English radio stations.

In DC, WTOP moved to FM because its AM did not cover the market fully. In San Francsco, KCBS already existed... they just added FM as a simulcast to try to increase the younger demos. Both were huge, pre-existing stations.

I don't think FM Hot Talk will ever make a good return. Neither will dance. FM Hot Talk is way to expensive for anyone to run without the ratings to match it. An audience for a dance format would be hard to attract with the recent addition of AMP.

Nobody is talking about hot talk... pardon the dedundancy.... but simply the move or start of traditional talk formats on FM where it attracts younger listeners.

I think Fm hot talk will return, despite how expensive the format is, station owners realize that A LOT of people want to listen to that kind of stuff. They would be foolish not to consider bringing back the format....

"Already covered by KFI"

Already covered by NPR!

NPR is snoresville. I can say that, been there, produced it, hated it. The only good thing is that way back then we had the best studios and equipment because of government funding. I doubt they get all that anymore. But the content was BOOORING! Produced on some of the finest hardware money could buy but not scintillating by any means.

Even if you hate Rush and John and Ken you can not say that they will put you to sleep. Maybe a few radios flying out the window or someone running off the road, but never ever boring.

Although LA Metro has only 7-8% African Americans, I think a well programmed and marketed Urban AC could do well here. Since the majority of African Americans in this market are concentrated in central LA county, one does not even need a "full Wilson" signal to serve the African American community. I enjoy listening to KJLH but I get the feeling it is run more like a hobby than a business. If a larger company, such as CBS, bought it, or a similar signal, and used the cost savings (vs. the cost of a full Wilson signal) towards marketing/promotions, an Urban AC should be able to pull at least a 2.0 share 6+ and perhaps even more 25-54.
