Any Grants to help LPTVs go digital?

Hi, I have a friend who owns a small market LP and currently doesn't have the money to go digital, does anyone know if they're are grants availible to help him stay on the air?

sheeeesh.....more of my tax money going to subsidize some LPTV operator running infomercials and home shopping all day

They should just give your broadcasting buddy whatever $40 coupons they have left, and make them redeemable. ::)

If they can't afford to convert to digital, then they should go dark.

I think this is why Channel 48 in Hartford, CT and its partner station Channel 34? in Springfield, MA are up for sale. You buy the stations for 900 G's. Then you have to spend another kajillion dollars converting them to digital. Not worth it. Especially since these 2 aren't on cable or satellite.

Digital LPTVs can be put on the air on the cheap if the owners decide to go that way.

For example, an LPTV station I converted from analog to digital in Washington state:

$3,000 - single channel encoder
$9,000 - 120 watt transmitter
$250 - feedline
$100 - connectors
$250 - power divider for antenna
$1,400 - two antennas
$200 - rack
$200 - other parts and cables
+ reuse some equipment from analog station

~$15,000

He told me it would cost 30,000 dollars. He runs a smaller spanish network on his station, and he is included on the digital package on two area cable systems.

Is there a PSIP Generator in there anywhere? My biggest gripe right now, about Low-power (and, those "Medium-Power) stations, is having bad PSIP and no EPG information.
I think the FCC should eliminate the loophole that let's some stations leave out the Program Guide. It seems that it just makes people less likely to tune in for an upcoming show, and makes it harder to know what show they are watching.
But worse, it just makes all broadcasters look bad when OTA viewers see many "holes" in their guides.
"No Program Information" is NOT the name of a popular show.

Don't get me started on stations with missing time-of-day clocks and System Time that is days off. That really screws up the EPG for everybody.

Go digital, run infomercials, test patterns, or reruns of My Mother the Car.
Whatever. Just don't force the taxpayers to pay for it.

There's also the cost involved with getting the station on COMCAST, COX, and maybe one of the 2 satellite providers. Then you gotta find something better to show than RTV. RTV doesn't have any good shows on it.
But you have to admit that it is better for a TV Station to have RTV instead of 24/7 of either infomercials or home shopping. I know I think so.
