Any guesses on the new format that will be on 96.7?

Smooth Jazz making a return...another CHR to go after KHKS...any guesses?

Well Citadel seems to be pretty high on True (aka moldy) Oldies with Imus In The Morning. But my suspicion is that 96.7 will go to some form of rock. Probably AOR.

No Smooth Jazz and no head-to-head against Kiss.

Disagree. Eagle is doing okay ratings wise, but that hasn't shown up in revenue yet, and Bone ZPS and Jack and Eagle have the Male 25-54 rock audience split up that it'll make it very hard to program and position an AOR station against those 4.

Citadel has some pretty good CHR and Jazz stations..I was thinking more like an Adult-CHR that would target audiences from both CC stations KDMX and KHKS, but who knows..

HOLY CRAP, YOU SAID THE BAD WORD...

Adult CHR is a really bad word around David (Anything but all spanish music is evil and Clear Channel is the the most amazing company in the world) Eduardo.

However, personally I have to agree, I think a well formated Adult CHR would be perfect in the market. The audience is owned by KHKS and KDMX (both ironically owned by David's favorite company).

Why go head-to-head with two better signals? Kiss & Mix would just put the squeeze on 96.7. David or no David.

Those are some pretty cheap shots. They also happen to be untrue, go read his archive.

Even if you had a Cedar Hill FM, it would be a mistake to try and take Kiss head-on. They have history, great programming and management personnel, and an incredible brand. No amount of billboard and TV campaigns will be able to overcome that kind of incumbent advantage - much less on an awful rimshot signal that only covers a piece of the market.

All CHR's today are adult..ñ generally researched and targeted against 18-34 women.

(Anything but all spanish music is evil and Clear Channel is the the most amazing company in the world) Eduardo.

Dude, that's some wicked s-*-t your'e smokin'.

However, personally I have to agree, I think a well formated Adult CHR would be perfect in the market.

If there is any audience group of importance where signal is ultra-critical, it is in young adults. 96.7 only puts a 70 dbu over 688 thousand people... while KHKS puts a 70 over 4.91 million persons. There is no way 96.7 could even touch KHKS since the billing potential of 96.7 is likely less than Kiss' promo budget.

Anyway, Kiss is already an adult CHR. Over 80% of its audience is 18+, and over 50% is 18-34 and 20% is 35-44! 65% of the AQH is female, too. The is no need for another Adult CHR there.

The audience

What audience? If you mean 18-34, #1 in that demo is KESS, not a CHR. #2 is KHKS, #3 is KBFB, #4 is KLNO, #5 is KKDA.

is owned by KHKS and KDMX (both ironically owned by David's favorite company).

In 18-34, KDMX is not even in the top 10. 18-34 is the usual demo for measuringing CHR performance.

Oh, and CCU is not my favorite company. But I respect them and they are tough competitors.

What if...

What if... And I'm just floating this... What if you kept The Texas Twister as a stand alone country station and not the red-headed stepchild of KSCS?

Consider...

Yes, the signal is north. So is the potential revenue...

Yes, there are two "heritage" type country stations in Dallas. Dude. First, it's Dallas. Second, what do you think people north of Dallas listen to?

Yes, the listening population is less than that of a Cedar Hill tower. However... Check Arbitron. If you consider TSA (which is only way to view a rim shot) then this station has close to 300k listeners (12+, M-Su, 6a-12m as of Spring '07). I'm sure that someone will update this figure, but keep in mind that most of that number will only be apparent in the Spring and Fall. If you don't know why, then find another thread.

Make The Texas Twister exactly that... That's why I say. Put a real morning show out there... Find a billboard or two... Do cable. But make the station it's own entity.

(end pipe dream)

However... Check Arbitron.

Doing TSA adds 1 million to the MSA, but only adds less than 50 thousand persons to the cume of KTYS (281,000 in TSA, 237,000 in MSA) so what we see is that the TSA adds a lot of land that KTYS does not coover.

If you consider TSA (which is only way to view a rim shot)

Not really. Most TSA's expand in all directions, while a rimshot only, generally, benefits from one cuadrant of the expansion.

then this station has close to 300k listeners (12+, M-Su, 6a-12m as of Spring '07).

It's lower in Fall of '07. TSA is only twice a year, which is why in my experience nearly no agecy even looks at it.

When the PPM arrives, there will no longer be a TSA anyway.

And...

Obviously, a rim shot is only going to see a benefit from a single direction... In this case, it's the direction of monetary growth in the metroplex. That being stated, you can't deny the value of potential local business dollars that simply aren't available to the two current country stations with any signal of note (primarily because of $$$). With respect to agency business, there are seperate dollars available to the Sherman/Denison, Gainsville, and Southern Oklahoma markets that agencies have to spend based on geographic factors and not DMA numbers.

This business model has been proven... I've read that you may know something about KLAK. When you consider the 100k Watts of KTYS vs. sub 50K Watts at KLAK, imagine the possibilities!

This obviously isn't Victor, and it's not my call... Hell, it may not be his either. Like I said... I'm just floating the idea.

as long as its not Talk, Country "spanish is a language not a format" formatted station, then it should be okay. Maybe Vietnamese Rap

Ah, the masses are learning. I first used this expression in an address to the NAB Convention in 1982. After 26 years, it's catching on.

;D

Catching on? I've only heard that mishmash on this board. I have never once heard anyone say it in person. I'm not sure if that's a blessing or a curse.

Kiss has an identity crisis - is it a top-40 or is it a hip-hop station? In the 90's, when rap was popular before hip-hop, a top-40 in Florida started advertising that they were top-40 without rap, and went to the top of the ratings. I think a top-40 without hip-hop could do the same here. Something like KRBE, but with a larger playlist. Top-40 for the rest of us, who find the racist and sexually explicit hip-hop not to our liking.

I don't think there is as much of an identity crisis as there has been a shift in top 40 playlists away from rock to more rhythmic-based music. Look around at the playlist of Z100 in New York or KIIS in Los Angeles or even 97.5 in Waco. There is a lot of Hip Hop on CHRs everywhere, because that is what is hot and has been since the mid 90s. Rock music is almost non-existent on MTV even in their beds.

I am sympathetic to you concerns about lyrics, but offensive content is not limited to just Hip Hop. Sample the last 3 Nickelback singles.

rbru - you said it best.

Adult CHR is much different than Mainstream and Rhythmic and Rock CHR's. Yes, the format is splintered into 5 new formats since the 90's duldrums.

Your typical Adult CHR (true ACHR) services the 25-34 year old demo, but targets a women in her younger 30's. I would place her around 33-35

Your playlist will combine the strengths of Hot AC powers and spice in only the largest CHR crossovers; Paramore, Daughtry, Chris Brown, Kelly Clarkson, Justin Timberlake, Sara Bareilles

-----
Your typical Mainstream CHR services the generic 18-34 demo. Its target is a bit younger, floating in the 27 year old area.

Mainstream is whats in the name. You take the top spins on the CHR charts, maybe a dash of Hot AC to balance out the 6am-3pm shifts, but most part a straight up CHR; Usher, Justin Timberlake, Panic!, Kelly Clarkson, Pink, etc.

-----
Rhythmic CHR leans a little younger than that, look for them to super serve the 12-34 demo, focusing on a woman near the age of 23-25, but has quite a few male cross listeners.

A well programmed Rhythmic CHR should focus on the Rhythmic Charts, but not be afraid to throw in a power CHR hit to add balance. Focus on the strength music analysis, high rotation, etc. FloRida, Usher, Young J, Chris Brown, Fergie, Justin, etc.

-----
Rock CHR (there are very few out there), but they are more male oriented CHR's with the power Hot AC hits thrown in for good measure. They seem to land the super 28-32 year old male.

While they are few and far between, a few do exist. Mostly in smaller markets where there is no active rocker to follow suit. Paramore, Three Days, Three Doors, Matchbox, Timberlake, etc.

So when you compare signals like NYC, Austin, etc. They rank along the lines of CHR Mainstream. The focus is to be all to everyone. What 96.7 should do is create a niche format.

Wow. I just thought that ALL CHRs were basically 18-34 core, and the music mix had to do with the ethnicity and geography and history of the market. And I thought nobody targeted 12-17 (except as a launch catylist) because there are essentially no radio buys for 12-17 to speak of.

In other words, the CHRs in markets with loads of Blacks or Hispanics will lean rhythmic, and the CHR in Fargo will lean rock / alternative or pop.

96.7 does not have the signal, population coverage or ability to do a niche format that competes too directly with a full signal successful station.

Well hey... I was listening to CHR at the young whippersnapper age of 13. That's about the time my music tastes started to develop. Of course this was years... check that, decades ago.
