Any guesses?

Any guesses to what Univision has plan for KXTN aka Tejano 107.5 on Monday 03.13.06?

Rumors heard-
1. Spanish Oldies
2. Country added to the current format
3. Hurban returns

Personally, I think Univision will bring back Hurban or atleast mix it in with another type of format.

Let's face it, something is going to happen. You don't fire most of your full time air staff and announce every hour for more than a week that "The New KXTN is coming on 03.13.06."

What ever happened to Tejano format? I'd like to hear from Mr. David Eduardo about this, I always wondered why more regonal mexican formats was around than Tejano, only ones I know of is in San antonio and one in Palacios,,,<P ID="signature">______________

Tejano died when Selena past away. In case you didn't know, the Tejano Music Awards are no longer held in San Antonio. The dwindling attendance forced the show to held in Laredo.

**Latest word is 107.5 flips @ 7am Monday morning to something similar to Jack FM** Jose or Juan??

Yeah, you're right. Tejano is alive and kicking...LOL....I guess thats why many stations have said adios to the format.

BTW, Jonny Ramirez sounds tired and old.

SA is one place where the Tejano lifestyle is very much alive. There is plenty to play for the Tejano listener there.

The music was nearly killed by the Tejano labels being bought by the big labels, who then tried to make the Tejano artists appeal outside Texas. Before her death, Selena had had one song played on one station in all California... and the music was diluted for the hard-core Tejano.

In addition, the 90's brough huge waves of new immigrants, from Mexico, who did not know or like Tejano. So that is why other formats have surged... yet KXTN remains a really viable radio station.

Some of you forgot to mention KSAB 99.9 in Corpus Christi. Their tejano station has been around for I think as long as KXTN and it's still doing good down there. As for the dance/hip hop format, I don't think so. Mix and Z play enough hip hop to compete with the beat, we don't need a huge flood of the same music 3 stations play already. Hopefully we will see another country station, maybe a classic one or move The Outlaw to 107.5, but to be honest, I would hate to see KXTN go.

Re: Update!! YES YOU ARE CLUELESS!

Let me tell you all what is really happening here. Tejano music is dying. Why you ask? 1) whomever said on this board that stations are dropping the format left and right are correct 2) Tejano is a mostly Texas thing. It is definatly different than regular spanish music. 3) Club spins. Every Tejano slash country bar I have been to (my points of reference are of bars in San Antonio and Corpus) they play the same crap that they played 10 years ago... literally! What has changed here? The stations with the format sound no different than the spins in the club. The same 20 songs you heard way back when. Oh and in my opinion it is sad that is has gone so down the drain that the music awards are held in Laredo instead of the Alamodome. You could have a better show in the Alamo (not dome) basement than you could in Laredo. I would be really sad if the format dies completely. But it is in bad (really) shape and needs a lot of work to revive it. I am beginning to think it cannot be done.

Stunting & Heritage

A couple of things to consider when discussing a possible
format flip for KXTN. KXTN is to San Antonio what KROQ is
to Los Angeles - legacy calls recognized worldwide as leaders
in their respective formats. KXTN is as much to San Antonio
as is The Alamo. It was also the first station in the
country that mastered the art of bilingual or spanglish
presentation and probably the reason why Clear Channel tapped
former KXTN PD, Jessie Ríos, to aid in the launch of KLOL in
Houston. KXTN is the model by which all media platforms turn to
when marketing and targeting to assimilated Hispanics.

Tejano is probably dead as a current based format. But, it isn't
dead for those who grew up listening to it. It would be a public
relations disaster if Univision made a radical move with KXTN.
Let's say they do decide to flip away from Tejano.
I can already see the headlines in the San Antonio Express News:
"Univision says goodbye to Tejano" or "Tejano officialy dead!" It
would make the local news, protestors would picket the KXTN studios,
the city council will hold special sessions, etc. I'm not sure
Univision would want that kind of publicity right now. But, then again
Univision will be expecting all these outcomes and flip it anyway.
Yes, no format is immune.

Award shows don't make a format.

With that said, what are the possible outcomes for KXTN? Here are a
few guesses:

1. KXTN relaunches as "San Antonio's Classic Tejano" with hits from
the 70's, 80's, & 90's. Advertisers covet the 25-54 age group. Besides,
Univision is already #1 with 18-34 hispanics in S.A.

2. KXTN relaunches as "San Antonio's Classic Tejano & Groovin' Hits".
Tejano from the 70's, 80's, & 90's along with a few english-language
hits from those decades that appeal to the demo.

3. La Kalle. The fastest growing segment of the U.S. Hispanic
population is native born Hispanics. What better signal to use to appeal
to those Hispanics than the station that invented bilingual marketing.
Poetic genius. But, the story is still being written with the format
despite a few success stories in other markets. However, according to Mediabase: "Rakata" by Wisin & Yandel was added to their rotation on
March 4th. Input error or a possible foretelling? hmmmmm.

Re: Stunting & Heritage

I agree with you but KTFM was also a heritage station and look what happened to it. I don't think Univision will completely get rid of Tejano format but I think their looking at re-inventing the station. Possibly Tejano mix with Hurban or something to that effect. According to the latest S.A. trends 12+ 107.5 has been sliding down.

Actually, the bilingual model was developed at Super Q in Miami in the late 70's with Agustin Acosta, Annie Lanz, Martica Yedra and others doing a Spanglish presentation of English CHR and Spanish tropical and pop. KXTN came over a decade later.

It has been shown over hte last few years to be a 35+ format, and increasingly English in presentation.

Kalle already tried in SA, and changed to Adult Hits a month ago.

I often read of KBBF, a public radio station in Santa Rosa that
signed on in the 80's(i think), as being the first using a bilingual
presentation. What about KEDA in S.A.? When they signed on in the
60's did they use a spanglish presentation? Any other Tejano - modern term -
stations that pre-date Super Q that could have used a spanglish
presentation? I'll research Super Q.

Then how would you rank KXTN's significance? Wasn't this station pulling
incredible shares in the 80's and 90's?

It moved to FM in 1991, and it did do very well in the early 90's. It was at 1310 before that, and 107.5 was Spanish-language AC KZVE "Que Suave." I believe the switch from KBUC country to KXTN/KZVE occurred in either '87 or '88.

Sorry, Herb Levin was manager at Super Q in late 1977 when Susquehanna bought WJOK and converted it to bilingual. The bilingal idea was in part to protect the 14 share on WQBA AM at the time. The station continued to be bilingual for quite a while. When I managed WHTT in the early 80's in Miami, WQBA shared or transmitter site (FM was on center tower of our directional)

No. It was Spanish then as it was really a conjunto, not a Tejano station.

I do not think there is much data on the station. Herb is retired, Martica is at Radio Martí, Annie is in tampa, I think, Julio Vergara, another jock, is in NY, and the rest I have lost track of.

It went on the air in, I think, sometime in the about 1989 on 1310 while 107.5 was ballads. When the AM got better shares, GM Steve Humphries convinced John Tanaglia to flip the stations. Tejano went to 107.5, and spent several years in the 10 and 11 share range, but began a steady decline in the 1995-1997 period which is when the record companies ruined Tejano. Now, it has nealy no 18-34 and is around a 3.5 share station...still very good, but not a 10 share.

By contrast, Recuerdo in the sales demos extraped to over a 5 share in January, #1 in Spanish.

Tejano is staying in San Antonio. If you like "Tejano Oldies". KXTN staffers have leaked out the format change....

The format is already Tejano oldies 90% as there is very little new Tejano music... so that would not be a change.
