Are there any licensed Ham operators on this board? Maybe we can get a Chicago radio net going on 2 meters.

I know that there are some Chicago jocks that are hams, and have talked to a few.

Maybe we can meet up on the Antioch 2 meter repeater since it has good coverage of north Chicago and south Milwaukee. Can you hit any of the Chicago repeaters from your QTH?

I think to be fair to everyone, you would have to consider a repeater more South, to be in the metro and allow our fine participants, downtown, on the South Side of the City and burbs participate.

Another option would be Echolink.
______________

It really does not matter to me, since I have 50 watts and a base antenna to play with. For the folks with HT's and Mobile rigs, one of the big Chicago ones might be a good choice, since many of them have suburban receive sites. 146.67, 146.76, and 146.88 have really good range. 145.25 in Downers Grove is kind of right in the middle of the Suburbs. 147.21 Aurora is good one also. So... what time and what day?

Colonel,

The old "ACLR KD9FA" repeaters @ 147.225 (?) might be another good spot. Not even sure if they still run the remote sites they used to in the 90's. They had some killer coverage and when you hit that machine, just about any of them, the noise level was almost non-existant. And there is a Chicago personality that belongs to a radio club that uses their system for their weekly meetings.

*Maybe* something can be worked out, for a weekly check in or even a once a week rag chew. If we were welcomed there. I would not mind tossing a few bucks, along with others, to the machine owner for maintenace to host us.

Just tossing out some ideas.

I was saddened when the HAM/Amateur board was cancelled @ R-I. Doug (HitRadio) was a ham too and we used to discuss how it did not get much traffic.

Anyone else have any ideas?
______________

I actually use the 147.225 machine on Monday nights, since I am a member of the club you mention. They are a great group of people. The club, as you can imagine, would love some new members.

I suggested this kind of net to the club President about a month ago. Maybe a weekly "Radio Net" after the club net.

ACLR is no longer, and N9KJN now runs the 2 meter sites. In St. Charles, I have to use at least 15 watts to get into that machine clearly. The other obstacle I face with that one is that I get bleedover from 147.210 in Aurora. Coverage seems to be good if you are East of I-355.

That one would be a good one to meet up on.

I'm not, but have a book and have seriously considered taking the No Code test... Any advice/tips?

Save up... it's pricey!! The "Now You're Talking" book is my recommendation.

Much of the test is common sense.

Don't be surprised if you are asked this question on the test:

When can you use vulgar language on the air?
a. between midnight and 6am
b. from noon until 3pm
c. only in an emergency
d. never

Pricey?

You can pick up an HT for under $100. Thats not too pricey. Or an older HF rig for a couple of hundred.

K9EZ,

You are right, but you WELL know.............

OK now I have a 2M rig. I need a good ShortWave reciever to hear the HF Ham's. Ok I want to talk 440. Wow, 220Mhz is so quiet and uncrowded. I could use a nice scanner to monitor some local signals, OMG, 6M has opened up and California is coming in! Amateur TV!?!?!?!?!

You get the point. Next thing you know, you are working a 2nd job to make have all the toys. ;)

I know we are veering off subject here, but it still involves Chicago Radio. Is the Toy Store still open in Wheaton? Last time I heard of them they had limited hours.
______________

What I meant was that it can get addictive, and before you know it, you find yourself buying antennas, amplifiers, towers, coax, base stations, mobiles, etc. It's enjoyable. Just be sure to get the wife interested early on... Or you might be stuck with the $100 HT for a while!

Yes it is... and thank you Roberto! (the very nice and very knowledgable owner) I do believe you are correct about the limited hours.

Right now, I believe the hours are basically 12-5pm Tue-Sat, with occasional exceptions. It's always a good idea to call ahead and check.

Was there a decision made as to a day and time - and repeater? SW suburbs here... but running 50W.
