Any insight on the numbers?

Until this nonsensical subscribers-only listing policy is reversed, I refuse to discuss the ratings. It's like
listing baseball teams in a certain division and leaving off the teams that are in third, fifth, and seventh
place. Unless (and until) all of the players can be seen, there can be no meaningful discussion.

Well, it is interesting to note that even with the Froggys and the Rendas refusing to pony up the money for the numbers, that the 50,000 watt Blowtorch comes in as the 7th ranked station in the market.

That rumbling you hear is Dr. Conrad spinning in his grave.

I would presume WSHH is ahead of them too, but to paraphrase Miss Clairol, only the subscribers know for sure.

KDKA has a dilemma (which has been going on for a while now) and a choice. They can throw in more attitude
and turn it into WTAM, or they can go into reverse, bring back "Someplace Special," and be the talk station for
the WJAS generation. For now, they still have their legendary cojones caught in the fence.

Mr. Ingram, that is an excellent point.

KD has been spinning its wheels for the better part of the past decade. Some of the problems include former management types that didn't have any idea of how to program a talk station, and some that wanted to set the station back to the "Someplace Special" days of the 70s.

There is a lot that can be done with that station to make it a viable player in this market, but time is running out, and quickly. Some ideas:
-First off, blow up most of the entire lineup.
-Keep Larry, send Marty and Pintek packing. (2nd time for Pintek)
-Use the KMOX model for news with CBS coverage at the top of the hour followed by a full live and local newscast every hour of every day.
-Get rid of all of the syndicated shows at night. (Bohannon's and Grayson's acts are getting stale.)
-Hire a talk show host or two that was at least in high school in the past 25 years. (If you're going to attract a younger audience, you need a younger point of view.)
-Promotion, promotion, promotion. TV spots during prime time, and not make goods on Channel 2 during the Letterman and Ferguson shows. Bus signage, billboards, etc. (You have to spend $$$$ in order to make $$$$.)
-Total overhaul needed for weekends. (Do we really need an hour of weightloss or snake oil salesmen? Also, Tradio is bush league radio for small markets.) Talk shows should be devoted to lighter issues. My theory: who wants to talk about the serious stuff when most people want to get as far away from the Monday through Friday crap as they can?

Those are just a few ideas. Would love to hear some other ones.

Also, what should I charge for consultant fees? ::)

I am sure with a new PD KDKA will go thru some changes and soon.

But I have to ask, why would anyone view the "Someplace Special" era as a negative?

I understand wanting to attract younger listeners. But hiring a bunch of Madden/McIntire clones won't do anything but sink the station further.

Hard hitting? Yeah, I want that. Edgy? Sure.

But I just think we have mistaken that in recent times for rude.

It's been done to death if you ask me. And I just think engaging the listener - Someplace Special- is going to go a lot farther than the way many Pittsburgh broadcasters have performed recently under the guise of catering to youth.

All ages like to be engaged. None like to be shouted at.

KD needs to find a way to get a few more big snow storms, lol.

The only weekday show i listen to very much is Marty Griffen. I don't like the pacing of it and the constant restating of the topic, but he at least covers a variety of timely topics, gets good guests and is not a total right wingnut.

The Chris Moore show is the best on the station, with good callers, nice back and forth between the host, guests and callers; it informs without insulting.

PD's typically don't make strategic decisions at KD. That is reserved for those higher up the food chain, where nothing has changed and likely nothing on the air will change either.

Early on in the Fan's existence, I heard some research that said the number 1 station KDKA-FM's listeners came from was KDKA-AM. The AM's numbers seem to bear that out. Most of the rest of KD's audience is women over 65. 1 in 6 people in Pittsbugh is a female over 65.

CBS is a little hamstrung because they only have 3 FMs here. If the KDKA audience has any hope of getting younger they have to find a way to get the station to FM. I don't know the current rules, if they could conceivably be allowed to own another FM here. Bet they wish they still owned 92.9 (the original KDKA-FM).

With so much ex-KDKA talent @ The Fan (Cook, Alexander, Hawthorne, et all), is it any wonder that is where there listeners came from?

It makes sense, because so many Fan callers seem not to be cut from the mold of a "character caller" like Myron Cope used to have, but rather the KDKA-AM mold.

Think Lilly, and how ill equipped the hosts are to take her calls or how out of place she seems to be as a caller.

>>>Early on in the Fan's existence, I heard some research that said the number 1 station KDKA-FM's listeners came from was KDKA-AM.<<<

So the grannies and Undercover Bob's "Let's abolish property taxes" crusaders are now interested in analyzing the Pens' penalty killing?

They should have gotten a nice invasion of listeners from 1250 ESPN considering it quickly went out of business.

No, but the guys over 55 all went. The rest of the Fan's audience seems to have come from the ESPN leftovers, DVE and WPGB.

Come on, Boss. The guy makes sense.

Just listen to The Fan's callers. Heck, I once heard Alex Kramer call up to talk about the Montreal Canadiens.

Turns out they're his favorite hockey team. Who knew?

And Lilly, bless her heart, is the traditional KDKA-AM listener/caller you're referencing to. No question. And she's probably the most famous caller the station has.

Besides, if someone wants to hear the Pens' penalty killing analyzed, they're listening to The X.

You're talking a serious investment if cash and effort from a management (the people in New York) who have no interest in doing so. They don't care about the heritage or anything else, so they're not going to try to revive a dying AM franchise at the cost of television spots, more and higher salaries and all the rest. They'll milk it until there is no more milk and then put it quietly to sleep.

THE 2 BEST THINGS ABOUT KDKA...DR. KNOWLEDGE AND CHRIS MOORE...THE REST IS JUST NOT INTERESTING AT ALL...THE MORNING SHOW SOUNDS ANCIENT, SATURDAYS ARE EMBARASSING, AND THOSE SINDICATED SHOWS ARE FALLING ON DEAF EARS...PLAY TAPES OF JOHN CIGNA IN THE MORNING...EVEN THE NEWS IS WEAK...JUST MY OPINION...

I say give the "cookie lady" overnights Monday - Friday. That would be more entertaining than the syndicated programming on there now.

Was.
Was the most famous caller.
By all accounts Lilly is banned from calling.

Bohannon's act was ever fresh?

I enjoyed Bohannon reading wacky supermarket tabloid headlines at 2:30 a.m. on Saturdays circa 1986.

I can honestly say that was fresh.

Now, as of lately, well . . . . . .

At least he's intelligent.

Excellent points pman44, especially your last sentence. I think there is nothing wrong with "Something Special", but it needs to be "Something Special 2012".

I agree. Chris Moore is one of the best at the station and that's because he realizes it is not about him but instead it's about the topic, listeners, and his guests. He treats them all with respect. Others should take note.
