Any movement at Sophie? PD? Airstaff?

CBS Radio is currently reviwing applications for air staff.

reviwing = reviewing, right?

People should not drive and internet. (And yes, it's a small case i in internet. Just like it's a small t in telephone, r in radio, et al.)

The 'e' is silent anyway.
And remember, there's no 'e' in team- Oh, wait a minute.

Nevermind...

The PD of Sophie is Charlie Quinn the PD of KYXY as well. Remember it's CBS, they have NO money for startups. And lately CBS is doing nothing but cleaning up after Joel's mistakes.

Charlie Quinn...

Hey, did he once work at HITRADIO 103, WHTT in Boston in the 80's?
I LOVED THAT STATION, even got a few airchecks somewhere...

Charlie "built" Ruby Radio on Live 365.com. That was one of the stepping stones for Sophie.

Of course, on-air staff Tony claims that he french-kissed Sophie, but that's another discussion.

Not to be a downer, but I heard a female jock doing a break about 6:45 this evening... she sounded like she was fresh of the community college station. Then on top of that, she talked over a spot... killed the spot, then :15 or :20 later let another spot kill her. Terrible. If that was a 'tryout' as indicated by allaccess... thumbs down.

Other than that, Sophie seems to have added some music... not the same 20 over and over anymore. 'Sunday Rehab' was kind of good too. (I think that's what they called it)

Live for San Diego Sunshine

I was under the impression that this was going to be a edgy, innovative, music intensive station, but sadly, from what I heard yesterday, the presentation sounds like any other stale Hot AC. Not what I expected. Blah.

With two Alternative stations in the market as well as an AAA is there a hole for SOPHIE to be more edgy? They are probably better off going straight after KMYI. No matter what they do, it will be a challenge because they picked an oversaturated format. Oldies/Classic hits would have been a better choice.

Stick with Sophie!

I think you'll find soon, very soon... Some fresh voices that are innovative and entertaining, while not entirely inexperienced in radio either! It's brand new, just a baby radio station, and I think, with time, you'll be very impressed!

Wait, just a bit... Sophie is on her way, you'll see (hear)!

You're kidding right? While the people behind the Sophie and the on-air talent (like Tony, and Jeff) have proven track records, Sophie is another station in a sea of music that really doesn't offer anything new, alternative, or exciting. Of course, they are going after women and in my case, another age demo. At first it was interesting, yet I hear that same interesting and now that's .....

The station that continues to surprise me is KyXy. Live, local station, great personalities, and a solid signal. At least Sophie has the signal.

It's not 94.1, it's not 94/9. It's trying to be a cross between two stations. Of course, it doesn't matter where the collective group here write about the station. It's all about ratings. Spin Dr. Quinn knows all about that.

ncountysurf has it right: Live for San Diego Sunshine

No, I am very serious!
The people behind Sophie realize that this is a popular format for Diego! Look at the success of The Flash, 91X, Stars version 1.0 and 2.0. Figure in that you have a an area with 2 major Universities, and the demographic starts to become very clear! Sophie is EXACTLY the right move. L.A. has Star and KBIG, so San Diego has Star and Sophie.

With time, and a capable programming and airstaff, I predict listeners will hop on Sophie!

The people behind Sophie are the exact same ones who have been making mistake after mistake at 103.7 for years. What makes you think they all of a sudden learned something about successful radio programming?

That's an excellent question!
It comes down to economics, in my view. They are going after a young adult demographic, one that advertisers most want. These are the people who spend money. A high-energy, fast paced format is one that will sell well. In addition, it is an adult format, one that compliments Kyxy nicely. CBS can sell time for both stations as a package; those that want more edgy hip-rock, will surf to Sophie; those who want more vocal poppy Kelly Clarkson American Idol'ish music will listen to Kyxy. Both stations go after a similar target, and people who are done listening to Sophie will graduate to Kyxy.

The other thing, and this is Key, is like I said before, San Diego abosolutely DIGS this format. When you look at the success of formats like Star, Mix, My, JACK FMTM, 91X and 94/9, not to mention 933, it is easy to see there is a substantial market for Hot AC and Modern AC in the San Diego market, espeically for the one station that knocks off the competitor. Star 100.7 and Q106 were much more modern leaning in presentation at one point, than the current offering on 94.1 (which is still a good station, I'm not knocking it either). But CBS saw the hole for something a bit more edgy. Think back to 92.5 The Flash. The idea was "A friendly Alternative" to 91X, and it did well until Star caught wind of it and Modern AC was born. Sophie is just filling the gap, and it fills it nicely, in my opinion!

G-Dawg, for someone who lives in Texass ...... you sure spend a lot of time in the Sandy Eggo Boards.

Mis-speltings aside, Sophie is like french-kissin' your sister. Warm, fuzzy, and yet disappointing. Interesting, yet after one month of listenin' it just a Flash in the pan. See previous post about the on-air staff.

Radio Sophie is just another music station playin' the same songs heard on other stations. No real winner here.

See you on the radio,

C
