An alternative station would be cool. Zeta gave that a try from '00-'02 and they sounded real good. The ratings hit the floor at that point, losing Paul and Young Ron didn't help, and going back to active rock couldn't stop the tailspin.

I might be able to see FM talk on 94.9, but doubtful rock will return in any type (The AAA/Alternative hybrid has been working in markets that weren't rock markets, but Miami is still different). 93 Rock hasn't done much better ratings-wise than Zeta (but probably has much less overhead than 94.9 did), the Buzz in WPB is basically done, and in Key West WIIS pretty much came in the bottom 1/4 of the ratings. SE Florida just isn't rock friendly for whatever reason (though the opposite could be said about 15-20 years ago)

Also, about half the FM's are hispanic because over half of the population in Miami is hispanic! Not all of them listen to mariachi music or salsa...and not all of them are Mexican (my older Puerto Rican step-cousin took great offense to that very comment from a drunk white guy in a bar in Hallandale and this poor fellow got a bloody nose). Basically, same language...different cultures/tastes in music/etc.

I might see CC tweak the format somewhat or switch it to something else hispanic before an all-english format returns. I would imagine that we won't see any flips this year besides a format tweak at SBS or CC

No, the Miami MSA has a much higher Hispanic percentage than Houston. Expect more Spanish stations, not less.

Actually, there are 20 commercial Class C FMs in the Miami metro. 6 full signal ones are in Spanish, plus Leisure City rimshot WRAZ, which really only serves the Homestead-Florida City area. So the vast majority are in English. Of the 10 non coms, only one is Spanish. 30 stations, 7 in spanish, about 23% of total.

Not all of them listen to mariachi music or salsa...and not all of them are Mexican

Very few listen to Mariachi... only a portion of the small number of Mexicans, almost all in southern Dade.

Basically, same language...different cultures/tastes in music/etc.

Salsa and Caribbean Tropical (Kalle, Zol) appeal to folks from the Caribbean Basin, mostly the Antilles, Colombia and Venezuela. Pop (Mega) has universal appeal, as does AC (Amor, Romance).

The largest group is Cuban and Cuban American, representing over half the total Hispanic population under 55, and nearly all of the 55+.

Zol changed format this week, by the way... new morning show, new music mix, new imaging. Everything but the name changed.

i just heard that 92.3 is changing formats to english oldies after the sale goes through LF bought them and 102.7 will become the sports station and 790 goes to all talk

LF is BUYING a station? They dont even want to be in this business! They tried to unload all their properties after they bought Jefferson Pilot. They sold some, but pulled the others off the market (including Miami) when they weren't offered enough money for them.

Where did you see that info? I'm very curious to learn more!

one of my friends at 790 told me that last night after he got off work.

LF has the SALE of its stations on hold, until pricing stabilizes.

92.3 is not for sale. It is one of the least probable sales in the entire market, with its highly successful Spanish adult hits format. The Alarcon's are totally unlikely to sell a profitable station in Miami which is their corporate home and the center of all things Cuban in the US.

That's not a rumor... it's a fairly tale.

Does your friend drink? There is no other excuse for such a wild and untrue story. :)

no he doesnt drink and his boss told him that the company wants to go FM with the Sports Talk so they blow QAM off the air genius and 92.3 will be Magic 92........... The Alarcons wanna get out of the radio biz and they thought LF would suit it best since its the same music anyways......... LF is gonna purchase it for 250 mil talk about profit for The Alarcons!

SBS is not getting out of radio, and a Miami FM price capped at $100 million when Cox bought WTMI. Today, values are much lower, so anything sold would be considerably less than that price.

Of course, the whole rumor is about the silliest thing I have ever read here.

I am also glad to know that Camilo Sesto is "the same music" as Jim Morrison. Wow...

Alot of the younger Hispanic's listen to Power 96, and even 93 Rock. Alot of people dont realize it but alot of Hispanics love Rock music. Just look at Latin America and how many Rock stations, and Rock Leaned CHRs it has. Some Hispanics even like Dance Music, though not as much as in years past when Latin Freestyle and Latin house were popular. Ive even known Hispanics to be country music fans, though thats alot more rare. Im sure some of the younger hispanics also listen to Y-100.

Also, there are plenty of American people that enjoy a good portion of Spanish Music, like kids that like Reggeaton, and older adults that like Salsa and Merengue.

Anyway, my point is, in a market like Miami, it would be stupid for even the English Language stations not to serve the very large Hispanic community, which isnt just Mexicans as some think, but also plenty of Cubans and Puerto Ricans, as well as various Latin American countrys, although not near as many Puerto Ricans as New York especially. Markets like Miami and LA need to serve the Hispanic Audience, why alienate half the population????????

Where did this "Mexicans in Miami" thing come from? Historically, there have been essentially no Mexicans or persons of Mexican heritage in the Miami metro. The base is Cuban, going back to around 1960, with that group, once nearly 100% of all area Hispanics, now down to about 45% of the total, or 700,000.

Next are the 10% that is Puerto Rican, followed by Colombians and Nicaraguans and Dominicans. Mexicans are less than 4% of the total and are mostly concentrated in the agricultural South Dade areas of Homestead and surrounding towns.. around 60,000 to 80,000 out of 1.6 million. On the other hand, over two-thirds of the bank and finance executives with titles of vice persident or higher are Cuban or Cuban American; Miami's economy is controlled by Cuban interests. And, because of the Cubans, the household income of Miami Hispanics is higher than that of non-Hispanic whites in the market, the only place in the US where Hispanics control and dominate the economy.

Well thanks for pointing all that out. Dont missunderstand my post, I was saying that Miami doesnt have very many Mexicans, but alot of uneducated Americans tend to call all Hispanics Mexicans. Miami does have a sizable portion of immigrants from latin America, and especially Cuba, and a decent amount of Puerto Ricans as you agreed with. It makes sense that Miami has more Cubans than Mexicans, the island of Cuba is only about 150 miles away, while the Mexico boarder is very far away, plus Florida is a Penninsula that doesnt have very easy access to Mexico, unlike California and Texas and other Boarder states. ;)

Wow, Clubber is still here. Did your pal on 107.1 enjoy his cease and desist letter from the FCC?

why not flip 94.9 into what mega on 103.5 used to sound like, make it into a movin type station that plays freestyle

LOL.... I dont condone Illegal broadcasting in any way. I havent talked to him in a few years, but its kinda unfair that they busted him, but left all the much higher powered pirates that are playing carribean and hip hop stuff. That station is still alive and well on the internet.

Sadly, this is true. I like high-energy dance music, but I know many who don't. This is more so with the younger generation; they listen to crunk (UGH!) and modern hip-hop (can't leave out reggaeton, either).

I'll still take old-school freestyle anytime.

I would love for someone to go FM Talk. Unfortunately, Clear Channel owns the only stations that would be good prospects for that kind of flip. So, it will probaby never happen and if it does it will be all syndicated garbage.

Oh well, one can dream.

If a CC station goes FM talk, my assumption is that it will simulcast or replace WIOD-AM...although there is a possibility they would try "Real Radio" down here (it does well in Orlando and West Palm, but look at what just happened to WMEN!) I would be willing to say if a station flips soon, FM talk will get a shot.
