if Cume-u-less kills off mojo-94-9 then hopefully somebody will put the old skool jams on WCIN ;) just an idea.

There is a lot of tire kicking but nothing definite.

Cumulus will likely kill MOJO, especially if #'s don't improve, and Radio One does UAC with 100.3. As I have always said MOJO exists only because there has been no FM UAC to blow it out. Cumulus may however choose to beat R1 to the punch in which case 100.3 goes Gospel or Smooth Jazz.

Given that all these other things are likely to happen prior to the finalization of a WCIN sale, the future of its formatics are very much up in the air.

Possible senarios....(Just an educated guess)

1. 94.9 segues to UAC
100.3 Goes Gospel
1480 Smooth Jazz

2. 94.9 Back to smooth jazz
1480 Gospel
100.3 UAC

3. 94.9 stays the course
100.3 Goes Gospel
1480 UAC

4. 1480 does none of the above and new owners flip it hispanic regardless of other moves.

Interesting

Interesting scenarios, Soldier. But, I doubt 94.9 will ever go back to SJ. Maybe Jack, since it's cheap and easy to run. Don't look for Mojo to change anytime soon. They'll let R1 do their thing and see how they can react to it. Depending on how patient Cumulus is, it might be around for a while. Who knows? Maybe Cumulus themselves will buy WCIN! They like AMs!

How much could it possibly be worth?

Isn't the buyer assuming $950k or so in debt and whatever payment the auction demands beyond that? Couldn't wind up being much more than $2 mil total, no?

Re: How much could it possibly be worth?

It could be worth more than $2 million depending on how much the receiver needs to get out of it. It'll probably be auctioned. If the poster below says that WCVG went for $1.5M-$1.8M on a 500 watt station, then a station that's 4kw and a better tower site in terms of location, it could fetch more than WCVG. This signal could be better than the WDJO 1160 signal, especially at night. The towers are in the dead-center of the market. Pattern at night isn't perfect, but I'd say it's better than WDJO. Of course, you don't know until you put it on teh air.

Re: How much could it possibly be worth?

It's worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

I agree. IF Mojo flips early, it's to beat R1 to market. IF later, it will be a reaction to stimuli (Likely getting it's a#$ kicked by an FM UAC). Could very well be JACK, but I am willing to discuss a gentlemans wager that MOJO cannot survive in an environment with a SOLID UAC FM, as the piece of the Cincinnati Black populous is neither large enough to sustain both,(they will abandon MOJO with a collective click loud enough to be heard with the naked ear.) nor is the white populous in love enough with "Jammin Oldies" to sustain it alone. As for the patience of Cumulus....that will be seen with time, and depending upon how long they are willing to patiently accept a sustained beating under the aforementioned scenario. Cumulus could very well be a player....only time will tell.

One final thought....
I will pretty much bet the formats in play will be UAC,Gospel,SJ, in that order with R1.

WCIN should go Gospel NOW

WCVG is now twangin' it up, so why don't you guys flip the bird to a satellite Gospel channel? I think that would be a great move (maybe not popular with you Soldier :), but think about it!) There is NO urban Gospel station now, and WCIN covers the market there better than WCVG even with WCIN's very low power.

Absolutely!

You said what I've been thinking for a long time....even before WCVG dropped black gospel, but now more than ever. I wouldn't do it from satellite though. At least not all of it. There is money to be made with this format from the local community which tends to support this format very well. And WCIN has a much better signal than WCVG. It can actually be heard throughout most of the area, and particularly in the predominantly African American pockets.

A mix of paying programs from black churches and black gospel music with paid spots. I think it would work. And WCIN would continue a most important tradition....serving Cincinnati's African American community as it has since the early 1960s!

And if not that, how about real jazz. ;-) The roots of jazz are black, right? Oh well, I can dream. WNOP lives on only in my memories.

Re: Absolutely!

NOW YOU'RE TALKING..... I HAVE TO SAY IT'S A SHAME THAT THIS STATION HAS COME TO THIS.. WHO EVER BUYS THIS STATION PLEASE DON'T CHANGE IT BACK TO CLASSICAL MUSIC.

Believe it or not Oscar....I had that thought about a month ago, and believe it or not, I think it would not only work, but it is a popular choice for "ME". Contemporary Urban Gospel is really R&B and Old School minus the booty call and drug use. lol.
The only thing I don't agree with is that you don't do it off the bird.... Live and Local Baby! With a possible caveat for overnights 10p-6a.

even with WCIN's
> very low power.
As Jerry Glanville once said to a ref.....Do you know what NFL stands for?

I agree, but...

...I was thinking in terms of what they could do RIGHT NOW! And I don't know if the current owner is in any shape to hire people to run a live and local station. It would seem to be a good proposition to get preachers and churches to buy lots of time, but getting a music library and a full airstaff might be too much for a temporary owner to deal with.

Library- NO Problem. Have it.
Airstaff- Need 5....Have em.
Desire-??????

Re: I agree, but...

Then I say DO IT! Have you guys heard from any of the former WCVG people? It would be an instant hit. Huge void closed.

Re: Absolutely!

> As someone who once worked for WCIN, I think all of these
ideas are possibilties. And, I respect the heritage of
WCIN as an urban radio station serving the African-American
community. But, moving their towers and cutting their power
a few years back has changed the contours of the station's signal.

The late H.E. "Sonny" Burns, the longtime GM of WCIN sold
a great deal of advertising to national agencies on the
station. But, Sonny (whom I always had the utmost respect
for...he ranks among my best "bosses")would never sell
ratings. He sold signal. The old WCIN's signal blanketed
at that time the area of Cincinnati with the largest percentage
of the black population. Sonny would tell the agencies, in
effect, if you want to reach this audience, you must buy
WCIN. It might not have the biggest signal in town, but the
signal it has blankets the people you want to reach.

Before I would decide on a format of any kind with that
station, I would want to look at a current coverage map,
and see what the audience composition is in the areas where
the signal is strongest. Then, I would decide what format
could work best.

Just saying "this" format or "that" format would work would be
playing with fire if the area the station covers today, doesn't
adaquately reach the people you need to reach to gain an
audience.

Just for the record, I have no format preference, and am not
suggesting one here. But, as I think you can appreciate,
it's tough enough to run any AM station these days, unless
you're blessed with a large signal. One of the problems, I
think the station has had is that the owner had been
programming the station with his "heart", not necessarily
his "head". Succeeding with a small AM is risky and difficult.

Whatever format someone eventually chooses, the decision simply
cannot be made by saying "if you program it, they will come".
It don't work that way these days. Especially with AM.

Nope...no contact, and in a rare but historic moment we COMPLETELY agree....but 2 out of 3 does not a change make.....I would still need current ownership desire.

Agreed, if the signal TODAY is the signal upon which you need to base your decision. Fortunately, that is not the case. The signal upon which the decision needs to be made, makes all of the previous discussion more viable than the "if you program it they will come" approach you suggest. Additionally, the Sonny Burns era did not compete with as many stations targeted to the black audience. There was no Buzz, KISS, or Mojo. There was no incoming frequency (100.3) which will clearly target the adult black community, and owned by a company which already has two. The question today is...Where is the niche within the black community that can be owned given the competition within the market with an AM station. Of course this only applies if there is one, and if ownership decides to pursue it.
