Any Oldies in Altoona area?

Does anyone on this board know of any 50's Oldies stations in the Altoona area? I will be there Fri-Sun, and altho' I have XM in the car, I would like to listen to any available local oldies jocks.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to Tuna Town!

Fifties? Hardly any stations anywhere still play fifties oldies. But you can try 1370 and 1340. For seventies-based oldies, there's 93.5.

If you're a "real radio" person, you'll sell that danged XM receiver on Dial and Deal and listen to Dave Barger while you're in town. He doesn't play the stuff from the 50's but he remembers most of the tunes and you'll find the affable Barger referring to them on his daily talkfest. Is that good enough Mr. Satelite Radio person?

93.5...70s based oldies?

I listened this morning in 15 minute segments while doing stuff. You tell me.

(Just before 10am)
Canned Heat-On The Road Again (68)
Beatles-Can't Buy Me Love (64)
Jimmy Soul-If You Wanna Be Happy (63)
Cuff Links-Tracy (69)
Chiffons-One Fine Day (63)
Inez Foxx-Mockingbird (63)

(Just before 11am)
Beach Boys-Fun, Fun, Fun (64)
Fontella Bass-Rescue Me (65)
Peter And Gordon-Lady Godiva (66)
Dobie Gray-The "In" Crowd (65)
Hollies-Carrie Anne (67)

(After 11:30am)
Billy Bland-Let The Little Girl Dance (60)
Routers-Let's Go (62)
Edwin Starr-War (70...there's your seventies song)
Chiffons-A Love So Fine (63...I know "wow!")
Ronnie Hawkins-Mary Lou (59...I know "WOW!)
Barrett Strong-Money (That's What I Want) (60)
Temptations-My Girl (65)
Buckinghams-Don't You Care (67)

I think that what the problem is - is that as the generations change, so does the music.

When I was a kid, back in the late 60's, elevator music and music from the 40's and 50's could still be heard on the radio. Some FM stations in the daytime and a lot of AM radio stations at night.

Then when talk radio came along, many of the oldies stations were pushed to the side.

After a while, the 60's music became the oldies and now the 70's and 80's are the oldies. Wheew - I am getting old...

When you can walk down the isle of the grocery store and hear music from the 80's over the PA system, you must be getting old.
We were called everything from devil worshipers to godless creatures back then and now that type of music is mild compared to some of the crap that is on the radio today.

Rumor has it that there will be a major format change/switch in the market effective January 1st involving some AM & FM formats. Stay tuned...

Please tell me it's a new rock station?

I hear that the former & current Vernal stations will be making a switch.

Even though, WHPA 93.5 FM is currently religious; it is supposed to change formats. Don't know for sure; but, rumor has it to Classic Hits.

Then, the AM's currently owned by Vernal; will be coming back on the air soon. One of them will be Adult Standards and the other would be Oldies.

Just what I have heard around town.

Heard the clue today on Dave Bargker's show "Winter Man"

Let's either get this danged board moving or abandon it altogether. No wonder radio is dead! Let's forget about whether or not "Altoona has any oldies" and instead make some New Year's predictions for the market. Who's going to change format, who's going to retire, will be the trends in the ratings, and will the Dugger ever return to the market? There's some ideas for you all, now let's put our noses to the grindstone.

Perhaps the reason there is no activity on this or many of the boards anymore is that there just aren't that many people left in radio anymore... and the voice-trackers who are in multi-markets and syndicated shows don't care to comment on anything local.

I don't live in the area, but was on vacation stopping at Somerset almost 3 months ago. Doesn't 101.7 (oldies) reach Altoona?
