Any one hear KRMG lately?

I've been gone for a month or so and I'm not sure who's running the place but I tuned in last week and it sounds dreadful. The afternoon drive show sounds like they have ABS rejects running the newsroom. I heard 3 stories in a row from people who would never had made it on the air there a year ago. I did notice they started putting the FM first, which seems smart, but otherwise it's just bad radio.

I would say the opposite. I think they sound as good as always. I remember Dan Potter when he worked in Dallas. The guy sounds amazing. The one thing you got right is the FM and AM swap. Didn't notice that righ away. Makes sense at this point.

I haven't listened to it lately, but, with what they're saying about the weather, there's a good possibility I'll be listening tomorrow! Even if they're using bush league talent, I can't imagine anyone else doing a better job during bad weather. Over the Christmas holiday in '09 when the massive snowstorm hit, KRMG did a much better job than any other major news operation in the state. No one else in Tulsa came close, and KTOK was busy airing TV audio while KOKC didn't do much of anything in the larger radio market 100 miles southwest. Hell, KRMG was even covering major road closures and traffic mishaps in OKC courtesy of callers in the area!

I actually think KRMG is about as good, if not better, than they were a year ago. Mainly because of the departure of Joe Kelley. The news team is bush league, but they seem to have it together.

Again, Dan Potter was a huge upgrade. Not sure if he is also the news director, but I am sure he has input.

Look, Dan Potter is just alright to me. Honestly, his voice annoys me easily, which is why I can't listen to him for more than about 5 minutes at a time. I think the handling of his "stepping away" from KRMG was odd, especially since he came back a short time later to host his own daily show. Very weird. I'm not sure if he's the news director either, but I would say it's good if he is. KRMG has certainly done worse, especially since their last news director was a conservative talk show host. Overall, KRMG is lightyears away from where they were 15 years ago, and that's not a good thing.

I've been wanting to post the same "What the hell happened to KRMG" topic for about a month now, but figured if I did, people would say 'oh that's just Glenn being Glenn.'

I don't know what has happened to the on-air presentation. It's truly God awful. Anchors NOT proofing their scripts before broadcast. Anchors NOT being able to read through a script without fumbling and bumbling. Few if any local reports in the field, all readers, Fox national stories, Jamie Dupree packages, or sound taken from KOTV. It's dreadful.

I was at an event a few weeks ago and saw a KRMG reporter in the field. I've been wondering why their stories in the field sound so bad. And by sounding bad I mean the person they're interviewing sounds like they're being interviewed in a vacuum. Well, I observed this particular reporter holding the mic several feet away from the person they were interviewing. I don't know if the mic is the problem or what, but I've never known mics used to record soundbytes effectively being used when you are several feet away from the person you're interviewing. I never heard this particular story on-air so I don't know how the finished product came out. The acoustics at this particular event were awful and there was a TON of background noise.

I'll give their former PD and Joe Kelley credit, it may have not been an A+ product but it had certainly not deteriorated into this.

I shudder to think what severe weather coverage will sound like in 2013. Pray to God Dan Potter or Denver Foxx are anchoring coverage b/c without them it's going to be a nightmare.

If you guys are so good, go to KFAQ and convince them to allow you to take on KRMG. Michael DelGiorno did that years ago and actually beat them. Then he left and KFAQ fell. Guys, I am not a huge fan of any talk station in Oklahoma, but I get the feeling that there is a lot of anger from some people that are no longer in radio.

Call the PDs and convince them to hire you. If you can do everything that you talk about on this board then station management would be fools not to take your call. If you have talent, don't sit in the stands and yell at the players and refs, get back in the game. Spend time marketing yourself and less time criticizing others. I promise, the payoff will be better.

I would love to see KFAQ launch a legitimate challenge to KRMG, but it's not going to happen. KFAQ has no real news division that covers news these days. They just read stories, albeit while not tripping over themselves like so many folks on KRMG do.

This isn't about getting back into radio, it's about expecting a quality product as a listener. The people I talk to who are not in media are driven away from KRMG by other factors, but this type of poor content control is yet another reason why they flee. They know it's gone downhill. It's obvious to anyone who's not an apologist or an ostrich it's gone downhill.

I compare it to watching your favorite baseball or football team play. If you were to sit there and witness them unable to do simple things like hand the ball from the QB to the Running Back or throw the ball from 3rd to 1st base accurately play after play, wouldn't you be annoyed? These are simple fundamentals of radio, journalism, and broadcasting that I guess in the "good old days" of 3-4 years ago to the beginning of time, hell even 18 months ago, everyone took for granted.

People like me are sick of excuses. There are plenty of media outlets in Tulsa that do a better job with smaller staffs, fewer resources, and less pay. The No. 1 station in Tulsa should be capable of putting on an hourly newscast with proofed scripts and anchors that can get through them without sounding like they're about to have a panic attack.

Ionoshpere mentioned the news staff 15 years ago...... Richard Dowdell and Susan Crane in the morning, Hether Haddox midday, me afternoons, Paul Crockett evenings, Don Bishop overnights, Marshall Stewart and Neal Kenndy out on the streets. The late Kirk Bjonsgaard handled weekends. It was one hell of a staff.

Whoa there, kitty cat. I am no longer in radio by choice. And to your point of "if you think you can do better, do it", I probably COULD do better, if given the money and power to hire the right people for the right jobs. Unfortunately, corporations want to do radio on the cheap these days, so you have what you currently hear when you tune to 102.3 or 740. This issue is certainly not exclusive to KRMG.

I'm not here to fix radio. Gave up on that a long time ago. I'm here to comment about it...that's kind of what these discussion boards are for, ya know.

John is absolutely correct, it was a pleasure working with these professionals!

Well, that says it all. Number 1-that's where KRMG is now and the station consistently has top ratings. So, it seems to me that Joe Kelley must have been doing something right.

I would also like to point out that the consumers are the ones who say what kind of stories they want covered, according to the market research conducted by Cox.

You ex-radio guys are obviously some of the most critical consumers there are. I would say that being in the business at one time skews your viewpoint. Not that it is not valid by any means, but skewed nonetheless.

Absolutely!
