ANy one surprised by this:

on the new NBC show, 'south LAnd'
they dropped the word....err....umm,
starts w/ a P, ryhmes w/ wussy.
any one 'shocked' by this?

i was a little...taken back,
and thought well, saturday night...
and...oh wait, this *isnt* cable..

hmm....any thoughts? is this too much.
for what its worth, usually NBC is the one
who tries, and pushes the envelop *First*
however, its usually fox, and abc that
have the (repuatation) for it ...

Well on Are You Being Served it was said ;D

Mrs. Slocombe was always fussing about her ***** but that was a cat

I guess it depends on how it was used. If it was used to describe a cat or if it was used as a substitute for the word WIMP (or is it spelled Whimp?), it would be different as if it was used for a substitute for a female body part.

Like you can say C-R-A-P when you're saying it as a buzz word, As Bart Simpsons says "Can you say crap on TV" (answer: "On this network you can). But you can't say it as a substitute for well you know
:)

Nope. The show airs in the 10 PM ET/PT timeslot, so the rules are a bit more relaxed. That's what saved WNBC's bacon after Sue Simmons dropped the f-bomb during a live promo for their upcoming late newscast: it was just after 10 PM, so it didn't run afoul of the FCC's decency standards.

Wheres the problem? A "bad" word was said on TV. Too much f'n censorship on TV and to some extinct movies in this day and age.

Times have changed, and as a result, audience sophistication has changed. Sensibilities aren't offended as easily as they once were.

Just the other day, my friend April Lipschitz was telling me that hearing these words on TV doesn't bother her.

Her friend Katrina Dicklich worked in Standards & Practices at UPN.

Excuse me please, I have to feed my 12-year old pussycat, a Russian Blue named Jasmine.

I love that show. Can't help but laugh at all the innuendo.

I have a Russian Blue cat too! They're as close to hypoallergenic as cats can get, which rocks.

I thought you owned a shih tzu... ;)

The WNBC anchors "fleeting explicitive" was accidental. It appears that the FCC won't go after accidental uses, but 2/1/04 changed everything (The date of Super Bowl nipplegate).

You hear bleeps on "Family Guy" all of the time, where they put in curse words and have to bleep it for TV.

Most likely, the show was produced with the word without incident, until someone from NBC's Standards department reviewed it and might have had some issue with it.

Of course...NBC Standards always involve being in fourth place in primetime, so one probably was watching.

Yes...times have changed. But some people have not, and will always be offended by off-color language and nudity.

But that's 9 PM Central & Mountain, which is outside of the 10 PM-6 AM "safe harbor."

True, but do you think the networks care about flyover country?

The FCC regs define "safe harbor" as between 10pm and 6am local time (http://www.fcc.gov/eb/oip/FAQ.html) so any CT/MT station that airs such material in pattern at 9pm does so at their own peril. The FCC only acts if there are complaints, however, and I think most people in Central and Mountain time are conditioned to seeing edgier content in the 9pm hour, and don't know about the safe harbor rule, so they wouldn't think to complain. But that's just my opinion.

Just a general comment: I'm not in favor of full nudity and profanity on broadcast television, and I believe the uh...more sensitive in our society should be able to watch TV before 10 PM (9:00 Central/Mountain) without witnessing such horrors.

However, I do hope the FCC under Obama is a somewhat more liberal in this area. The uproar over Janet Jackson's breast, and the huge fines levied against the networks for sometimes accidental utterances of profanity (Cher on the Oscars, etc.) is ridiculous.

The FCC under Bush was an embarrassment.

Well there is the on and off button on the remote and the TV. Plus there is always PBS if you can't handle Network TV. I wish our Network TV would be more like the UK. BBC 1-3, iTV Channel 4, and the Network simply known as Five all have better and edgier shows.

Funny thing sbout the the "P" word...over the years I have heard it used quite often on a few RADIO stations and I dont mean as in ones pet pussycat either. Some years back I remember a jock on Hagerstown/Halfway, Maryland's 94.3 ( then 96.7 ) WQCM-FM, Andy Thomas quite often using that word on his shows. That and the term "Jack *** " as in slang for masterbation. He got away with it but then again WQCM was ( and still is ) a rock station so I assume their audience could care less.

I dont ever recall hearing the "F" word on WQCM but being a small market ( and not a whole lot of listeners anyway ) and with their format, I wouldn't be surprised if such a word hasn't been uttered at least a few times on WQCM.

My guess is that this may be in the nature of a Trial Balloon just to see what
they can get away with. I think I have seen this once before, on an episode
of Becker which CBS ran early in the decade. For much of the episode Shawnee
Smith's character is essentially topless. I remember thinking that was very strange for a broadcast prime-time show. This was not too long before the Janet
Jackson Super Bowl fiasco, which leads me to believe that they were testing out potential reaction beforehand. If that was their strategy it certainly did not work as planned.

Does NBC have the Super Bowl next year? If so perhaps they are looking at Eminem for the halftime show?

Ironically, whenever that episode of Becker runs now on cable there is a huge black bar placed over Shawnee Smith's chest.
