Any Other Format Changes for NWA Coming?

With all the radio stations sounding as bad as they do, is there any hope for a new format in NWA? there is no oldies station here at all. We lost the only good one we had when it went Spanish, and Butler dumped their oldies station for Spanish. There is nobody playing anything good. All these stations music is all over the map!!

when i went to school there the stations sounded pretty good but it's been a little bit.

how do the stations sound all over the map?? examples??

Everyone is playing the same thing over and over again. "The X " is now throwing in older music now, so they sound just like everyone else. "The Eagle" plays the same thing over and over again, and the country stations here sound awful.

I agree....it is overdue for somebody to do a format change. I am tired of CC and Cumulus trying to battle over the same piece of pie.

KIX 104 vs. Sam 98
Hot Mix 101.9 vs. Power 105.7
The Eagle vs. 92.1 The Keg
Magic 107.9 vs. Y 94.9

CC is is clearly winning 3 of those 4 battles, and with all the cutbacks at Cumulus....will they even bother to invest in a format change?

At least 104.9 The X and US 94 sound different than the rest IMO. When you say The X is playing older music....how old? what songs? A lot of modern rock stations still play the Pearl Jam, Nirvana, etc. from the 90s.

What currents does 92.1 The Keg play these days? Are they at least playing the new AC/DC or Metallica?

'The X" is playing AC/DC , but that is probably becuase of their new CD. They are also playing Older AC/DC -example: Dirty Deed Done Dirt Cheap. Great song, but it sounds wrong on that station. They are also playing Billy Idol songs that really belongs on a Hot AC or a "Jack " format.

The new AC/DC is a stretch on modern/alternative rock in 2008. Heck, the format was born years ago to play rock that DIDN'T sound like that. Personally, I think that should stay on heritage or active rock stations. If KKEG isn't playing it, maybe I can see why. Wow! Playing Dirty Deed Done Dirt Cheap is just flat out wrong for The X.

I think that the X is now basically an "Active Rock" format....

That would explain the old AC/DC...

If they start playing "Paranoid" then they will have officially gone active....

Your right, it's not working for them AT ALL.

Speaking of the X I thought it was against FCC rules and regulations to use the word "Sh*t" on the air? I heard Roach say it last week and then Saturday Marieke (former mid-day girl from the keg who was let go) said "oh sh*t" as well. If I were the Eagle or The Keg I'd be running tape on this station 24-7!

maybe that's the secret to their numbers? just use that word a lot!

Too funny.... Our numbers kick butt because we relate to our audience. Not to mention how we are all over the streets doing all kinds of promo work and putting on concerts. I do not use profanity on my show or condone it. With that said...I have in my 8+ years in radio broadcasting experienced live callers letting words slip out on air, as well as advertisers!!! Sometimes equipment doesn't always work right and everyone has had editing issues, including even editing some songs...but to come on this board and say we just blatantly say or use profanity to get ratings is preposterous. I would try focusing on what you or your company is doing in this market. We will take care of us...you take care of you.

Thanks for listening to the station! I would tape us too...it sounds really good. I will get back to editing and working on air...try to talk pretty! :)

If I was the Eagle, I wouldn't be worried about the X using profanity on the air, I would be worried about the X getting ahead in the next arbitron book.....

While you can make the AC/DC argument and The X plays a decent amount of Active Rock tracks (especially at night) I would still call them more of a modern rock station. I would argue that active rock stations don't play Coldplay.

Seems to me like the X has really started coming into its own. I never thought I'd be spending ad dollars with them, yet I am. And, I agree with the general sentiment that NWA radio is VERY stale, but don't expect it to change anytime soon. With the X holding onto decent numbers, and nearly every other station being a part of Cheap Channel or the Cloud, expect retarded conservative decision-making to continue for years to come!

I'm not going to knock any stations in the market...because...well there's too much bitterness on this board as it is. But let's look at some noteworthy points (focusing on the big boys in the market):

Country: It will be interesting to see what Nielson makes of the three stations. Kix continues to be such a strong product but is there possible redemption next summer? Everyone with an opinion still shakes their head at the choice of moniker for Sam but the station isn't bad...at least not as bad as the number show. Finally, US 94 is a great station...if they had a bigger stick and stayed as is...they could possibly take Kix off their pedestal.

Rock: The X is a beast right now...no competition whatsoever though...not to take away from the tremendous growth that has occurred in that poor building, but they def. get the "KISR award" for being so damn live and local!

The Eagle is strong and the Keg has an uphill battle ahead of them but will more than likely weather this storm and make considerable headway by the time the Nielson ratings hit next summer

CHR: why hasn't CC's mix done anything to be more aggressive against it's heritage counterpart? It's a well known fact that Power has their hands tied by the boys in Atlanta sooooooo....?

AC: Magic will always beat Y...not because of anything more than a little word called "heritage" and signal strength that sits in the top tenth percentile in the nation.

At the end of the day, why are there no major format changes (even though it's high time?) Because of risk! Between the two corps, they are both afraid of either detrimental effects or the miller kaplan is so rediculous that they can continue without rolling the dice.

I guess radio will leave the expansion to restaurants, hotels, and stores and hold on without any real modifiers until forced otherwise. But things better hurry up and get better or else those of us that are employed on this board will end up joining the number of out of work salty dogs.

----As a side note...I know that there is animosity toward different individuals but if it hasn't occurred to you guys....the hope for the future of radio is shriveling up like a damn prune...maybe we could take a pause for a little bit to try to figure out how we can improve our industry and put that to foot locally in order to revitalize so that we can continue to to wake up and come to work every day. If there are none of us left on air, there won't be anyone to battle with...all of the time and energy will be all for waste. Even though we all have differences in placement and views...we are still all apart of this fraternity and should do what is possible to preserve it. There...I said it...take it as you may.

I agree with everyting you are saying. The only comment I have about the Eagle is, I think there is too much John and Deek. I am not picking on them in anyway, I think they do a great morning show, but having them on at night is over kill. They might might be voiced tracked, but still, just play music at night. Night time listeners want music. As far as the X is concerned, the music I think has inproved and they are local and are out in the community alot. That is why their ratings are where they are at. Taking a look at magic, they are probably on eof the best programmed AC stations. Most of the CC AC stations play the same the muisc over and over again, and Magic does not do that. And finally, I would like to see an Oldies or a Classic hits station in this market. It's long over due since 95.7 left the air. Cumulus could easily take Y 94.9 which is doing terriable and make it a sucessfull with an Oldies or Classic Hits format. That is the only format that is really missing. We will see if 98.3 goes sports. I think that would be over kill for sports, and I am a sports fan and like to listen to sports radio, but there is not enough piece of the pie for that. Any thoughts anyone?

Willie - solid post. The answer is simply "egos." I really am going to hate to see the day radio days and I truely believe it's days are numbered unless these corporate companies change.

All the CC/Cumulus drama aside they BOTH have issues. Cumulus PD's have little if any control over music. Thanks to the internet I've had a chance to scan the stations there and no one is doing anything out of the box. The reason Mix is not as agressive as they should be is probably due to the fact that their PD has little experience or doesn't have the time to put forth in making his station a better product. CC allows the PD's to control their playlists so they have no excuse. Cumulus on the otherhand is a different story. Power's PD has to play with the cards he is dealt which can be summed up to being "safe." I'm shocked he's still there and hasn't quit over frustration yet. The KEG has serious potential against the Eagle. Music isn't really an issue for them. It's all about marketing and presentation which can be easily overcome. Y is hopeless. The station has horrible audio quality and sounds like a college station almost. Magic sounds clean and the presentation is flawless. I don't see Sports happening on 98.3 though only because Cumulus won't want to give Clear Channel those country numbers so easily. That's about as likely as Mix throwing in the towl and handing their fraction of numbers they have back to Power.

How the Keg has surivived is beyond me. That station should've been put out of its misery in early 2001 when Cumulus fired all of the jocks (Remember Sandi Scott, Chris Yeager...) . Hell, at that point the station sounded pretty terrible...

A good thing that I have noticed about the Eagle lately is the reduction of bad hair metal during the midday show. A year ago, you would hear stuff like Poison and Wasp, which sounded really out of place. Thank god that has come to and end..

But I totally agree...WAY TOO MUCK JON & DEEK....
