Any other Markets in Texas besides Lubbock?

I recall about 6 months ago someone was complaining about how the Texas board was all about the Tyler market.

On the TV boards we were noticing fewer people posting too. We concluded that with all the layoffs, those of us left are too busy to post on a regular basis. I'm sure it's the same in radio.

Well, Fred, between posting here, TV, and becoming the third Geezinslaw...you have personally taken away three people's jobs in Austin.

Interesting thread topic considering the first page of the Texas board is primarily concerning the Corpus Christi market.

Let's go for way left field. How is the Telephone, Texas market doing these days?

Ok, so Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio/Austin have there own boards. The Texas board gets info from Lubbock, Tyler/Longview, and Corpus Christi. Who are we missing... El Paso? Amarillo? Midland/Odessa? Laredo? Brownsville? Guess nothing much is going on out in West Texas.

There's nothing much period in West Texas. You know, I've wondered that myself, as to why there are never any postings about Amarillo, El Paso, even our next door neighbor, Beaumont. I swear, if it wasn't for stan we'd never know what is going on in the Golden Triangle. I guess we just don't have posters from these areas to contribute to the site, or the markets are just that unmentionable. That is the certainly the case with Beaumont/Port Arthur. Nothing of note ever seems to come from the Triangle these days, except for the stations themselves trying to leave Beaumont for the greener pastures of Houston/Galveston. That says a lot about the smaller Texas markets itself.

And what's going on in Cognito, Cahoots, and Denial? ("I worked for years in Denial...")

Seriously, I haven't seen much about smaller markets like the ones mentioned and places like Abilene and San Angelo, or perhaps most interestingly, Bryan/College Station. There is also not much about Lufkin/Nacodoches lately. Perhaps it's partly because there's not much going on and partly because they're just aren't many people there who've discovered Radio-Info.

As far as Amarillo goes, I don't think most people know this forum is here. I just happen to stumble across it or I never would have known about it.

Nothing really gossip worthy, Cumulus' six stations were hit by massive lay-offs. Gap bought our Clear Channel stations. KGNC AM & FM are still plugging along.

Some news from our station The Eagle....long time Amarillo jock Eric Stevens went to work for us full time in December. Eric woke up one morning with his voice in whisper mode. He went to the doctor and long story short... he was diagnosed with cancer almost two months ago. He is undergoing treatment and responding well. His voice is beginning to return and we hope to have him back soon.

At first look, a radio personality losing his voice seemed overly cruel, but we might not have gotten to it as quickly as we did, had it been a cough or mole...ect.

We are all very thankful for his progress.

I'll try to update the Amarillo info more often!

How long ago were these Cumulus layoffs? And I am sorry to hear about Mr. Stevens cancer situation. I do not know him, but that is truly unfortunate and hopefully he will return to work soon.

Thanks!. Major pipes...consistent talent, scary good production skills and a good guy on top of that.

The Cumulus lay-offs began about two or three years ago. In fact, Eric was one of them. There were a lot of good and talented people who lost their jobs. In 1992, there were at least five people on each of their four FM's. I don't think there are five full time people on ALL of their stations now. The folks that are left, are working their butts off without much help.

I guess our biggest "news" lately from the market came when KPUR dropped it's Oldies format and went Country last fall.

Shame what happened with Cumulus/Amarillo. Then again, that seems to be the nature of the beast these days.

Jamey K: Good to see you here! I'm a long-time lurker here who grew up in the Panhandle, where I first heard you on 1440 KPUR way back in the day. Wasn't Eric Stevens on KPUR too for a bit? I remember him hosting mornings on Z-93 for a bit. Anyway, you and Eric were part of the reason I got the courage to apply for a job at KQTY/Borger (about an hour up the road from Amarillo). I worked there for 8 years, then spent a few in Abilene, a decade in Breckenridge, TX, and now (after a couple of years away) I've been sucked back in, working at the station where I began. I'll never be rich, but I love the business.

Please tell Eric that this long-time fan hopes he has a complete recovery.
