Any Predictions For 06

> Any predictions for big changes to Houston radio in 06?
>
From a listener's perspective I would think the following changes would be possible this year:

92.1- Dropping "La Mera Mera", and going back to English programming.

96.5- Moving away from "Hot AC" and finally competing with KRBE as a second Top 40 station. If Cumulus' acquisition of KRBE begins to reflect poorly in the numbers, we could very well see "Kiss 96.5".

97.5- drops the FM News Channel moniker and goes all talk.

99.9- KSHN may apply to upgrade their signal this year, sell the station, and become the newest Houston rimshot. (Wouldn't hold my breath, but it's bound to happen to Shine All Nine one of these days.)

103.7- Switches to more Active Rock, trying to mirror KISS San Antonio. It will not help, and by this time next year we may not have "Rock 103.7".

104.9- Unless The Box goes down the tubes, Party will never have the same numbers as 97.9. Why not put "Que Buena" on 104.9/105.3 (with the upgrade of KPTI) and put Tejano back on FM at 93.3? I know that Tejano music is a dying format, but it is a rimshot, and I would think that it would show up in the ratings much more frequently, and with higher numbers than KRTX does.

107.5- First they dropped the Oldies, then they changed up the jingles. It's about time to put the ol' girl out to pasture. A nice rock station from Cox would be good here, and I was looking through the available call letters and noticed KZFX isn't being used on any AM or FM stations in this country. An active rocker called "FM 107 KZFX, The Fox" would be a cool addition to the Houston market. Talk about de ja vu.

and.....since this station is the butt of everyone's joke...

106.9- Talk didn't work, Metal didn't last, 2 incarnations of Christian programming have went by the wayside. What's next for 106.9? My idea would be to target the station to Conroe/The Woodlands, where it is licensed. I hate to say it, but Roy Henderson has the right idea with KTWL, it's just the wrong signal for the format. Forget targeting Houston! I know that is where the money is right now, but the population in Montgomery County continues to explode. Make 106.9 a Montgomery County radio station that doesn't mention anything south of FM 1960. A station that everyone in the northern suburbs can relate to and call their own. I think everyone would be surprised in the results.

This station is supposedly up for sale along with other "non-core" Radio One properties. If so, much will depend on who buys it. If Liberman winds up with 92.1, expect a simulcast of either 850 or 1230. If the new owner is someone other than Liberman, we'll probably see a return to some English language format.

The "Kiss" speculation has been around for years. You'd think CC would have pulled the trigger on it already if they had any thoughts of doing so.

The current format is labor intensive and expensive for the puny ratings it is bringing in. Cumulus should examine the type of operating model Cox is using on 97.1 and get a clue.

KVST 99.7 is in the way of any upgrade for KSHN.

I'm thinking they'll stay the course, at least for this year.

Party is aimed at Hispanics, The Box is aimed at African-Americans. Apples and oranges here. Both will be around for the forseeable future.

Que Buena is a complementary format to Estereo Latino, and Univision may be satisfied with it despite the signal limitations. However if 92.1 is really on the market, Univision might consider grabbing it and unloading 93.3.

Answered your own question there.

> 107.5- First they dropped the Oldies

It's still oldies, its just that the definition of Oldies has changed from 50's-60's to 60's-70's. They were wise to prune the pre-Beatles stuff.

There has been much talk about a "Bob" style format on this signal. Not sure it would do much better than The Point. 106.9 is a good signal, and should target the entire market.

Oldies isnt David Bowie, Yes, Led Zepplin or any of the other classic rock that KLDE has been playing lately. They were wise to prune the pre Beatle oldies from a sales standpoint, but playing classic rock next to Lina Rondstat or Aretha Franklin?

Sister station 96.7 flipped from oldies to "96.7 The Coast" up in CT, and WBIG in D.C just went classic hits and cleaned out the airstaff. Oldies stations are really starting to become a rarity.
______________

...which is exactly why you don't call KLDE "Oldies 107.5" anymore.
______________

There's no way Cox changes the format on 107.5. Since they've changed to 60's and 70's with some classic rock thrown in, they have moved into the top 7 on most demographics. That's an increase that will put $$$$ in their coffers. It was a great move business wise. There's a tremendous market of people from their late 30's to early 50's that love what they play now. That group also has the largest pot of disposeable income. The format their into now will be around for a long time to come.
