Any predictions on DX with Sandy on the way?

I've been all over the East Coast and I have to say that 1110 WBT has the best nighttime signal here that goes up and down the coast.
I've listened to them static free in Northern NJ, Concord NH and Stuart FL at night...
But go 20 miles west of Charlotte and the signal starts to fade at night (very directional north to south).
And those Blaw-Knox towers look pretty cool...At least 99.3 WBT-FM is there for those west of Charlotte at night.
Their slogan a long time ago was "From Maine to Miami." ;)

I did have a few interesting catches last night. Nothing too spectacular, but a few AM's I am sure were on full power. If not, then the storm must have really brought them in.

I'll post later when I have some time to organize them.

50kw station WINS/1010 is off the air for the next several days until floodwaters recede at their transmitter building. CFRB, you've just got a NY audience...

WINS returned to the air this afternoon.

Are they using their regular towers?

As best I can tell, yes. The water appears to have receded enough to get them back on the air. The transmitter building is quite well elevated, so I doubt there was any damage to the transmitters or phasor.

MW dxing very good

I doubt (don't know) if Sandy has anything to do with it, but DXing on MW has been fantastic today. I am inland (Arizona) so I don't even try for Transatlantics- but the reception on AM bands is stellar tonight. I only wish my one radio that takes batteries (Grundig 750) was working but I have it taken apart to repair a static fried FET. For those who do the MW dxing tonight is a good night for it. I envy those on the East Coast or around NYC as they would have a lot less interference to deal with. And yes I have been through a couple hurricanes, so yes I do know what I am "missing". Power outages and bad wx don't bother me a bit in fact I enjoy it. Cheers and happy dxing.

Here is what I heard last night listening from Central VA during the storm at 8PM EST:

580 WHP Harrisburg, PA - Booming in loudly. I never hear them.

790 WNIS Norfolk, VA - Booming in with no skywave fade. I can only hear them if conditions are just right, nighttime, at 120 miles from me.

860 CJBC Toronto, Ontario, Canada - Normally I can hear them faintly and enough to ID, but they were loud and clear.

1320 WAGY Forest City, NC - Never hear them in this part of the state day or night.

1370 WTAB Tabor City, NC - Again, never hear them and they were like a local.

1510 WLAC Nashville, TN - Hear them if conditions are just right, but rarely. Sounded like a local.

So, was it the storm, or full power?

Forgot to mention:

No catches at all on FM, and everything seemed normal, but WNEW did do full coverage and flipped 94.7 WIAD and 95.5 WPGC to simulcast of 99.1.

1140 WRVA in Richmond was doing live coverage the whole time as well.

93.3 WFLS had regular (every 15 minutes or so) live announcements.

With WLIB off the air its quite easy to get WOWO at night if you are in the northeast. I checked on the status of the other NYC 50kw AM stations, all seem to be sounding normal expect 710 which was very weak and 1560 which was weaker than normal. When 1010 was off the air I was getting just Toronto. It seemed nice, since where I am 1010 is sort of a waste with Toronto and NYC both at about equal signal levels.

Not related to the storm, but last night, the MW band was absolutely a wasteland. I couldn't get anything but noise and hash almost all evening. No WSM, None of the NYC stations, WLW was fading in and out are hardly listenable, barely heard WRVA, and 550 WSVA was the only strong station. At one point around 9:30 PM the band opened up for about 10 minutes, but then went right back to the same thing. I tried three different radios and in three different places with the same results. I am out in the sticks with my nearest neighbor over a mile away, so it wasn't any interference generated in my local area for sure.

I was able to hear 570 KLIF out of Dallas. I haven't been able to get them in a long time. I used to get them regularly back when it was WFAA. (Shows you how long ago that was)820 WBAP was an easy catch as was 1080 KRLD, but I had null out 1070 KNTH to get it, but it was still good. The rest was an AM mess. I the heard Cuban station on 530, but it was extremely weak.

Interesting. I forgot to mention that WWL was fading in and out. Clear at times.

I was inclined to think some auroral activity was going on, and it may have, but usually the Southern stations boom in and wipe out all the stuff up North around here when that is the case.
