Any Radio Services On DTV Subchannels?

Glad you checked in here. Is this the same thing WVIZ is doing with CSCN on 25.9? And does it show up on the Zenith(/Insignia) boxes?

I think it is - and it does not show up on my Zenith/Insignia boxes, nor on my Magnavox (Funai) DVR with ATSC tuner.

WVIZ's 25.9 does show up on both my Zenith/Insignia boxes, but doesn't show up on my USB computer tuner. I haven't tried it on my LCD HDTV lately, as that's being fed cable, but I don't recall it working last time I had an antenna attached to the thing.

On the boxes, it shows up as "AUDIO ONLY", with that legend moving from place to place on the screen like a computer screensaver.

I don't think it's QUITE the same. WVIZ sends PSIP while WXXI does not. This means more receivers will ignore WXXI's audio than WVIZ's.

Ah...that does indeed make it a completely different thing, then. I don't recall WVIZ's PSIP showing up on my Insignia or Funai boxes when I was in Cleveland over the summer, but sure enough, there it is in my TSReader grab. So, yes, WVIZ's "25.9" should show up on most receivers, while WXXI's wouldn't show up on most of them.

I guess that makes sense, as CSCN is a quasi-public service - it was on the SAP of analog 25, which was accessible to anyone with the "SAP" function in their TVs. Radio reading services arehistorically closed circuit due to the limited audience, but this saves them having to distribute those special radios in a lot of cases.

WXXI's audio is a non-public backhaul, a fancy STL, if you will...though I'm sure they don't mind if people would be able to listen and pick it up via the DT stream, public distribution is not its primary purpose.

I'm actually surprised WVIZ doesn't also offer an audio subchannel for co-owned WCPN/90.3.

They could theoretically do so for classical WCLV/104.9 (which is moving in with Ideastream and could use the help), but for the fact that WCLV is a commercial station.

WTNH-TV 8-2 in New Haven displays their NEWS 8 radar, with the audio of NOAA Weather Radio station WXJ-42, which transmits from West Peak in Meriden, CT.

I have never seen anything on 8-2 for WTNH. I just checked and I get "no info" with no video or audio, while 8-3 is a low-res version of the main channel.
