I'm not a big sports fan, nor do I listen to sports talk radio often. But I have to wonder if Joel and the gang at Clear Channel are stressing about what's happening in the Syracuse market.
Several years ago, the lose the rights to SU sports, which move to 95X and eventually to TK99.
A few years ago, they laid off WHEN host Brent Axe, followed soon after by WHEN hosts Jim Lerch and Bud Poliquin.
In 2008, Axe lands a new show on Citadel's 1260 AM. It eventually gets simulcast on Time Warner Sports.
This month, "Bud and the Manchild" make a comeback on the same station.
And yesterday, Citadel announces 1260AM is going to carry Syracuse Crunch games this season -- formerly carried on WSYR and WHEN.
Aside from Yankees/Chiefs, does Clear Channel have *any* "special" sports programming beyond the regular Fox Sports feed anymore? Makes you wonder if they regret all that "cost-cutting" in the past, now that the competition is looking to feed WHEN a taste of its own medicine.
To use another awful cliché, looks like another example of one man's trash becoming another man's treasure.
Of course, it's just as likely these efforts from the competition could fail and Clear Channel could get the last laugh after all. Only time will tell.
it's a good idea now that we have 3 sports stations in syracuse. rather than have all the teams on one station (when-am) the teams are spreading out to other stations in the market as is the case after other avenues open up. i betcha the next to go will be the chiefs to either the score or espn. this will leave cc with the yankees and westwood one sports only. eventually cc will flip when to progressive talk feeing up the yankees. i'm so glad other sports talk and talk options are opening up in the market. now if 105.9 would try to get local top of the hour news, traffic, and weather during the day they would have a chance of being a real challenge to wsyr.

Amen! The "Metro Traffic" canned news and weather don't cut it. I can understand Citadel probably can't hire people right now due to the Chapter 11, but once they're in the clear, they would be very wise to launch a newsroom -- with QUALITY/experienced talent to give WSYR some real competition.
Only problem: Bob & Tom. They don't offer a top-of-hour window (or any other time during the hour) for local news. B&T is really designed for (mostly music, not talk) stations that want to fill the entire AM drive shift without requiring any local content. There's no point in hiring a newsroom and going balls-to-the-wall against WSYR if you can't have any local presence in the morning. If WXTL is going to make the effort to do serious battle against WSYR, they'd need to get a different morning show. (And not to be mean, but they might do well to find someone better than Gary Nolan for afternoons.)
during bob and tom 1059 could do a two brief local newscasts around twenty and fifty four minutes after the hour. sure they can't do local top of the hour newscasts. but if they did a minute newscast followed by traffic and weather that would be fine in morning drive for now.
during the day at the top of the hour they could do two minutes of abc followed by two minutes local news traffic and weather also, at the bottom of the hour they could do a minute newscast

That's not worth hiring people for. Any "real" news/talk station anywhere in the country has news at the top and bottom of the hour, every hour (except for stations like WCBS and WSYR, who think it's "okay" to interrupt normal programming for Yankees baseball). If 105.9 were to do news at :20 and :54, they'd have to promote the heck out of it to let people know that's when they can expect to hear the news. That would look/sound pretty lame. "Hey, we have news too! You just have to listen at :20 and :54, give or take a few minutes." Unless someone's already a fan of B&T, they aren't going to turn the dial just to hear those newscasts. You can't get much done in a minute besides headlines, so for now, from a business standpoint, can't blame them for using Metro Traffic.
Honestly, I don't think B&T are a good fit for a talk station. They're carried mostly on rock stations because they do humor, not serious talk. As much as Galuski can be tiresome with the same old guests all the time (ie. Dr. Roizen, Rick Reagan, etc.) at least he's usually discussing "top of mind" or "newsy" topics every morning. Until 105.9 can get a local morning host who does the same kind of thing (but better) and a fully-staffed newsroom, they will not be competitive.
