I am normally the last one to start agreeing with people when they get on the "I hate Consultants" "I hate PD's" "I hate Corporations" radio bash... Simply because I believe that we can take advice from the most knowledgeable in our trade and use it to make us better.
HOWEVER, I also know that the best advice is given like a band-aid... apply it where it is needed! A good consultant knows that the local people know their market better than a San Antonio Focus Group. Shreveport Radio was once the stuff that made LEGENDS. Just start the list of names of artists who got their start in S'port. (that would be a whole new thread)
Too many times over the last decade, a new Market Manager would come in and give the consulting gig to his "buddy" or even worse a PD he once had to fire (I will never forget that one... that was an interesting choice, I guess it helped ease his guilt). Next thing you know, they are trying to make a station in Shreveport sound like a station in Denver.
If Shreveport weren't such a heritage market when it comes to Music then it wouldn't be nearly as egregious. I think Gary Mc is a super programmer and Paul Orr (KRMD) is the absolute most talented guy I have EVER worked with. Obviously I am stuck on Country and I can't write intelligently about the other formats except to say that when John Wilson was the GM at KMJJ it sounded better than it has since, (maybe the music pool is too shallow, again another thread.)
I am not advocating that we go back to the old "Hayride" days, I am only in my mid 30's so what would I know about those days... But I have to say I agree with Bodean when he/she says that the problem is that local people are not given the power to program their stations.
I know that in the early 90's Shreveport was a hard market to compete in. What was different then? Well, Foxy was at Cat Country, Gary was at KRMD, Barney was at the Radio Ranch (pronounced with a DOUBLE u), and those guys woke up every morning to COMPETE with one another. It made for good radio... GREAT RADIO.
Today if they were all competing with each other, they would get up every morning and get the same email from the same consultant and they would all play the same 18 currents in the same dayparts... um... well... it almost sounds that way now!
Now, I'm depressed. Excuse me while I call my sponsor
Ring...................
Hello?
Yea, it's me again...
You went back didn't you?
Yep,
Sandy, how many times have a I told you that if you keep going back to those boards you are only going to get sad remembering the good ole days?
I know (sigh) I know...
Repeat after me Sandy, "I will not go back..."
I will no... Hey let me call you back later, someone just posted something on here about how someone in Monroe thinks radio started going down hill when we quit using 4-track reel to reel machines... I gotta go bye!
Ok, I'm back and with that I have to go. In closing, I guess I can only say one thing... (in the words of the modern day poet) Public Enemy... "Fight the Power."
