Hi All! I haven't visited this board in quite a while. I used to program WZRU FM 90.1 and 90.5 in Roanoke Rapids, NC. We were an B/EZ-NPR station. As strange as that blend may sound, it worked in the region for quite some time. Since then, WZRU was bought out by Go Mix Christian Radio. I had the radio version of 'Every Breath You Take' in an "A/C Crossover' catagory that came up a couple times per hour. I also used songs like "Foolish Heart". I didn't use "These Dreams" by Heart. To me, that crossed the line a little too much. To me, it just didn't sound right when "Summer Wind" by Sinatra had just played. I can see some of the slower Boz Scaggs (mentioned earlier) working. I also used songs like "Angel" by Monica (I think that was the artist), most any hit by Celine Dion and Michael Buble. Of course, most of our audience was older...but I also saw lots of offices listening, where the office music was controlled by 20 and 30-somethings. I believe that was because...1. it's good office music and 2. the A/C crossover and 'smooth jazz' instrumental covers of familiar songs.
I would really like the opportunity to program B/EZ (or a modern-day hybrid of it) again. WEZV has the blend. They are using the Jones EZ format. Jones offers two B/EZ formats...one is about 40% instrumental, 10-15% standards, and the rest would be soft A/C vocals. The other Jones format is similiar to the 'classic' B/EZ format...mostly instrumental...about 4 instrumentals for every one vocal song. WHLC in the NC mountains uses the 'classic' EZ format now, but I don't think they stream. They are in a small, but very tourist driven area. As I understand it from a former morning man there, they have a large, dedicated audience, they are making money, and they are a "mom and pop shop". I REALLY miss this music on radio...and I am 38!
