Any standards stations playing "Every Breath You Take"?

You know the popular song the Police came out with in 1983 called "Every Breath You Take", & it was #1 on the adult contemporary charts, but it's also being played on most AC stations, what about standards stations? I know "Breath" can likely be heard on K-Jewel 99.3 in Fresno, which is standards/soft oldies & "The River" from Grand Rapids which is somewhat standards. How about Dial Global & Music of Your Life? Any others as well? Let me know what comes up.

I don't believe they have ANY reason to play it. And I hope they don't!! I don't even appreciate it when stations of the smooth jazz genre play it. It had its place 20 years ago. It's been overplayed for many years but should stay within the AC gold playlists.

Sorry.

Same here.....especially the hard riffs in the middle of the song (shortly before the little instrumental break)...too much to take. I remember a former AC station here in south FL, EZ 105 (now Hot 105), playing it and I'm like "huh?"

cd

By the way, I heard "Foolish Heart" by Steve Perry on a Dial Global standards station the other day & it was from the 80's. How interesting.

They've had that song in light rotation for some time now. One of my 70's favs has always been Boz Scaggs' "Lowdown". Jeff Rollins played it yesterday, admitting he liked it too. It seems rather odd when they do play it... but enjoyable none the less.

I can't make sense out of "Foolish Heart". When the format sounded like Timeless Favorites and they were playing "These Dreams" by Heart it might have fit. It does NOT sound right now.

"Every Breath You Take" likely made it into Timeless Favorites, but I would hope never to hear it on standards. It was bad then, and it's bad now. And smooth jazz really shouldn't play it. It has no place there. Sting has been known to do jazz-style songs, but this isn't one of them.

"Lowdown" also sounds out of place but it has a nice flute.

Hi All! I haven't visited this board in quite a while. I used to program WZRU FM 90.1 and 90.5 in Roanoke Rapids, NC. We were an B/EZ-NPR station. As strange as that blend may sound, it worked in the region for quite some time. Since then, WZRU was bought out by Go Mix Christian Radio. I had the radio version of 'Every Breath You Take' in an "A/C Crossover' catagory that came up a couple times per hour. I also used songs like "Foolish Heart". I didn't use "These Dreams" by Heart. To me, that crossed the line a little too much. To me, it just didn't sound right when "Summer Wind" by Sinatra had just played. I can see some of the slower Boz Scaggs (mentioned earlier) working. I also used songs like "Angel" by Monica (I think that was the artist), most any hit by Celine Dion and Michael Buble. Of course, most of our audience was older...but I also saw lots of offices listening, where the office music was controlled by 20 and 30-somethings. I believe that was because...1. it's good office music and 2. the A/C crossover and 'smooth jazz' instrumental covers of familiar songs.

I would really like the opportunity to program B/EZ (or a modern-day hybrid of it) again. WEZV has the blend. They are using the Jones EZ format. Jones offers two B/EZ formats...one is about 40% instrumental, 10-15% standards, and the rest would be soft A/C vocals. The other Jones format is similiar to the 'classic' B/EZ format...mostly instrumental...about 4 instrumentals for every one vocal song. WHLC in the NC mountains uses the 'classic' EZ format now, but I don't think they stream. They are in a small, but very tourist driven area. As I understand it from a former morning man there, they have a large, dedicated audience, they are making money, and they are a "mom and pop shop". I REALLY miss this music on radio...and I am 38!

I've not heard "Breath," but "These Dreams" by Heart is still played on Dial Global. Other oddities that have been or are heard from time-to-time include Celine Dion's rendition of Heart's "Alone," Restless Heart's "I'll Still Be Loving You," Steve Perry's "Foolish Heart" and others.

They may seem like strange choices for the playlist, but I'm not opposed as long as the continue to keep true standards from the 50s-60s in the mix.

Hi Brian.....

Nice to hear from you again. I'm sure a lot of the posters here remember your contributions to the board and remember WZRU. It was a really nice station and you clearly put a lot of thought and effort into the music mix.

I'd love to see ya find a B/EZ gig, too...but, wow, as we all know, they are few and far between!

I think just about every station playing this music has been mentioned on this board in the past few months. KZQX is super! We've also learned about a couple of really fine online stations thanks to this board, most notably www.crystalradio.ca .

Good to see ya on the board again, Brian.

A couple of things wrong with what you said about WEZV. If they play instrumentals they're hits like "Nadia's Theme" or "A Walk in the Black Forest", not covers.

Also, Jones no longer distributes easy listening. Dial Global does, and I read somewhere they dumped the classic easy though someone else has the collection and is distributing it instead.

I would love to be able to hear WHLC. I'm going to the mountains on Wednesday. Some of the highest mountains in the East block the signal, and even if they didn't, Star 104.3 is hot AC and moved their tower. We have WMUU, though I doubt I'll listen in the car and I won't be in my motel room much. They're kind of uptight, and a lot of the time the music will be either classical or religious. The Dial Global (Jeff Rollins/Carl Hampton) station was turned into a Rush simulcast that wasn't needed because the Rush station has a fabulous signal, day and night..

You are right. THey are no longer playing covers (by the typical B/EZ bands). However, they do play some 'smooth jazz' covers. If Jones dumped it, they did it in the past 2 years. I know that from first hand experience.

I've never heard them. I never hear any smooth jazz. In fact, when I talked to the general manager he claimed not to play instrumentals.

I only know what I've heard. Another company is supposedly distributing the Jones easy listening format.

Do you know who is distributing the format now?

It's been a couple years since I've been to MYB, but when I was there last, Easy was still playing (about 1-2 per hour) songs by Spyro Gyra ("Morning Dance"), George Benson ("Breezin")...that kind of stuff. I have notice their ratings have dropped off a little. They are #3 in 12 plus...third to a Country station and a Talk FM. Third is great for EZ or Soft AC in 2010...but, it wasn't too long ago that Easy was a strong #1.

Yeah, that worries me. The audience is getting older, although it's not like they have competition. Star 92.1 isn't soft.

If you heard that many instrumentals you were lucky. Even Dial Global does more than that, if your station doesn't use all the commercial breaks for commercials. Mine did this morning and they didn't even have the job listings, although they did have the daily report on the school system.

I've heard who is distributing the Jones format but I can't think of their names. Someone in my Yahoo group would know.

I think it's pretty amazing that those reports are always timed so beautifully, and never miss the mark at the end of DG's break window. By the way, whose voice is that on the job listings? Is it someone from the employment office or a relative of Buddy's? --- maybe his wife? ???

I always figured it was someone who worked at the Employment Security Commission. She sure sounds better than the person who does this where I live. I had to quit listening to that station back when all I wanted was weather. Paul Harvey was on another station.

I have to disagree on missing the mark. Sometimes the job listings end all of a suddden in the middle of one of them and then there are times when they didn't get the start of a song.

Hmmmm... Are we talkin' `bout the same station? Everytime I've heard it, it always ends with the canned announcement thanking "memories 1280" etc etc.. followed by the next song... right on the mark. ;D

Yes, we are, but maybe they've gotten it right lately.

I hate that "Mr. Lucky" keeps getting pused farther and farther toward 9:00. Before you know it, it'll be completely gone. It always starts on time but that's during a commercial so we don't hear that part. But I suppose I should be grateful for more commercials.

Pused ??? Well, it always ends right at 9. When it starts is usually while he's wrapping up the show, then fades into it. The ads usually seem to end around 8:56/57.
