WUHT in Birmingham started off that way, but morphed into a more typical UAC format that plays strictly R&B songs from that era along side current R&B and soul.

They basically are one in the same. However, soul songs tend to be much slower and have a laidback vibe. For example, an old school soul artist was Marvin Gaye and modern soul artist would be Jill Scott.

They all used to. But when ppm was introduced a lot of them dropped the "classic soul" moniker because it wasn't attracting the desired demos. The same way oldie stations now call themselves "classic hits".

I find it interesting that the oldest term, R&B (meaning Rhythm and Blues) may today be associated more with new music then old. There's the rhythm today, of course, but if you accept the classic definition of "The Blues", I don't hear it in today's so-called "R&B". However, there's some "bluesy" topics still out there today, so maybe that's good enough.

My buddy Dj Perry works there. I was told the station does 1985-2003, but that was about a year and a half back so I'm sure some 2004 and 2005 hits are getting in now as well.

On another note, I doubt it will be old school, but the domain "hot975phoenix.com" has been taken by the old MOViN 97.5, which is currently Christmas music, so I'm waiting to see what they become on Dec. 26 or January.

In California, I tend to hear the slogan "Old School and Today's R&B" where "Old School" refers to R&B oldies in general. Not sure if one would consider these true Urban AC's though.
