Anybody else hate electrolytic caps?

I've had to replace them in my EAS box, exciter, mod monitor, and more. Anybody find another type that can fit the value and footprint? I try to go to a higher V if it'll fit.

Never worked on an old ITC triple deck cart machine, did you?

If you had, you would have used a much stronger word than 'hate'...

I hate the fact that the transmitter has a "malfunction clock" in it.

You all know what this is... its a clock that is set to turn on at 1am and off at 6am. So the transmitter functions fine UNTIL 1am, when the malfunction clock decides to turn on and cause issues.

But what engineer needs sleep?

In one week I had to go to our transmitter site four different nights in the middle of the night for various issues,
(Security alarm, HV PS Fan, power hit, exciter issue).

If someone can figure out how to turn this malfunction clock off or set it to daylight hours, my life and sleep would be so much appreciated!!

=)

Not practical I know but could always go back to the days when the FM stations signed off at midnight and back on at 5:30am :)

Worse than the ITC triple deck is the Tektronix NTSC 528A Waveform Monitor

Why would you hate those cute little ol' boogers?? Why, they store power for you, at little cost. They work all day and night just to make your power a little less rippley, and they carry all that heavy audio between stages while keeping that nasty DC away.
Yes....they wear out after a while. But hey, it's an easy problem to find and fix. Someone mentioned the old ITC machines....when the carts stopped stoppin', you just looked for the trusty 4.7 uf cap that had dried up. Suck a little solder....insert shiny new 4.7....add a little solder....and wham, bam, you were a hero!
I wish every problem were as easy as a dried up cap!

Replacements for electrolytic caps

NEVER use a tantalum to replace an aluminum electrolytic. They fail shorted instead of open.

Aluminum electrolytics have gotten much better. New ones from good manufacturers should never leak. Replace with confidence.

A better alternative for low value electrolytics is to replace with the new ceramic caps. You can fit an 0805 surface mount case right between the pads on the circuit board. Now those will not only never fail - but their performance is much better. You can get them up to 10 uF, maybe higher as time goes on.

Speaking of Electrolytic caps, maybe you experts can clue me in. I just resurrected an old dbx160 compressor from a long sleep, and decided to recap it. I ordered 22uF 16 volt electrolytic caps from online, and they sent me these beige colored, sort of bullet shaped, plastic looking things with a band around one end ("negative" I assume), and a slight point at the other ("positive" I assume). Is this what it's come down to?

You must have gotten BC caps from Digi-Key or equivalent. You assume right - the banded end is negative. I just recapped a Belar FMM mod monitor with a bunch of these. I hope they last longer than the Spragues that were in there.

Don't go up in voltage (well, it don't hurt, but sometimes it's hard to fit them in) but in temperature. Use 105C caps instead of 85C.

They were from Digi-Key...

That is what they were, all right! Thanks for clearing that up.
