Anybody loving the old-school metal on WJRR?

They have been playing some off the wall stuff that I really miss from my high school years. From Iron Maiden and Anthrax to lighter stuff like Great White and Tesla. Is this just a "holiday weekend" type stunt or what? What's going on over there?

I was going to say that this was just a goof for the holiday weekend, but by doing the live search for WJRR on my windows page, this is what came up.
Real Rock 101one - Orlando - WJRR
Orlando's largest variety of new and classic rock and roll; listen live on the Internet.
Their website says nothing about them going mainstream, although it would be a good idea IMHO.

could they be "throwing in the towel", so to say, to ORock...sure ORock still has horrid numbers, but seriously...you'd think JRR would have enough punch to beat them already...that being said...and them NOT being able to take out ORock...is this what they resolve to?...leaving the entire "Real Rock" era completely?

IMHO...and in MY case...as a listener in their demographic...i couldn't stand more than 10 minutes of it...not ONE SINGLE current...heck, not one single 90's+ song...and i think if they continue this, and NOT make it a weekend special...their going to find ORock taking a CHUNK of their listeners by default...

after all...i switched to ORock after 10 minutes...

C'mon guys...This was just a weekend stunt. They did this at Clear Channel's DC-101 over the summer one day. They just kicked off Monday morning with Flyleaf's "Full Alive" and Rob Zombie's "Living Dead Girl." The last songs for Sunday night were LA Guns "It' Over Now" and Ozzy Osbourne's "It's Not The End Of Rock and Roll."

They are not worried about O-Rock. They beat them in the ratings everytime. As an out of market observer who work in Rock Radio, WJRR is one of the best Rock stations in the country. Their midday host Crash I think is one of the top Rock Jocks. I'm not saying their behind the scenes stuff (Clear Channel Budget Cuts) is cool, because it isn't. But give the station some credit.

And there isn't a station anywhere that plays all metal like that, nobody wants to hear that nonstop...

Sounds like WJRR was having a flashback to the days of the late, great WDIZ/Rock 100 FM.

Also,I always wanted to know why in late 1990s,DIZ was merged with JRR?

They were having flashbacks because people like Pat Lynch and Crash came from WDIZ. Long story short.... Paxson owned WJRR (alternative) and bought WDIZ (mainstream) around 1996. For some stupid reason, Paxson fired the staff of the then ratings winner (JRR), kept the jocks from the loser (DIZ) and moved them to 101.1, and created (modern a/c) SHE 100 on 100.3. That frequency has now gone through 2 formats and JRR flips between old and new rock every 3 years or so. All this while 96.5 WHTQ continues to rock right along. If you would have asked me 10 years ago if HTQ would still be a rock station today I'd call you crazy. WDIZ should have been put to bed... end of story.

John's right. Last weekend was a preview for a new Saturday night show featuring arena, hair and '80s/'90s metal show hosted by Pat Lynch. It runs either 9 or 10 until midnight.

Nothing cooler than hearing Anthrax's "Antisocial" on the way to Thanksgiving dinner!

You guys mean to tell me that JRR was playing old stuff over the weekend? Damn!!!!....I was out of town and had no idea!!!!!!

BTW....I think that JRR really needs to tweak their format a little. I think that a few oldies would sound great with the new hard modern rock that they have been playing. Old Rush, Zeppelin, Floyd, and hell...even The Who would sound great thrown into the mix....Rush released a new CD this spring that is pretty damn good and it boggles my mind why it did not get any airplay while the new Ozzy CD on the other hand has. JRR needs to get rid of that awful Saturday night late night show that they have. The hosts on that show have absolutely no idea whatsoever what real rock is. I actually heard one of the guys on that show say that Metallica were better than the Police.....the last time that I heard something that stupid was when I was watching the Journey behind the music and Steve perry said that he never felt like he was "part" of the group...anyways, I just think that it would not be a bad idea to do some adjustments up there, and put some more proffesional broadcasters on .......not college kids that think that Korn are the greatest group ever.....

But according to JRR's demo, Korn may be the greatest band ever.

The classics don't, can't & won't speak to the 18-34 males. Keep the hair bands on 96.5. Classic rock on an alternative/active station is, overall, a ratings killer. Why no one has picked up on that is beyond me.

I think it's pretty obvious that Metallica ARE better than the Police.

Some classic rock on an active/alternative station can work. At WRUF in Gainesville, we always threw in some Led Zep, AC/DC, etc. among the Metallica, Linkin Park, Nirvana, and others. Hell, a couple Pink Floyd tracks always came in top ten in all the music research we did. And obviously, WRUF has done well ratings-wise. Plus, look around at what kids are wearing. Notice a lot of them wearing t-shirts of classic rock bands? Notice how well Guitar Hero games, featuring lots of classic rock, are selling amongst younger demos?

And in saying this, you are telling me you think that person is stupid in his OPINION, therefore why should anyone take anything you say seriously? Cause I was totally into what you were saying until you said something to stupid...

Sorry that I upset some people on here....I am a radio freak and I am just getting my two cents in. I absolutely love rock-n-roll and what got me into rock was the state of rock radio that Orlando had in the mid-late 1980's. I just think that some adjustments would be a good idea.......also, I am a Metallica fan....BUT......have you guys ever heard their last album!!!!!!!YIKES!!!!!!!!!....The Police NEVER released a bad album......Stewart Copeland could out play Lars Ulrich anytime.......

I have no problem with you getting your points in, but I can't help but jump off the handle when people attack others for having an opinion of music. I hate most of the music on XL, but I am not attacking what they like, and too many people today tend to be very narrow minded, ESPECALLY when it comes to rock/metal music. It's just a pet peeve of mine is all. No hard feels and all that ;D

No problem skrape980, I totally get what you are saying........BTW.......I am very interested to hear the new show on JRR Saturday night.....I wonder if it will be live or voice-tracked?????

All signs point to voice-tracked.....I do believe that only the Fiasco and Crash are live on JRR anymore...

An easy way to tell if somebody is voice-tracked......instead of saying "Give a call if you want to hear something", they will say "Shoot me an e-mail if you want to hear something'.......

You guys ever heard any voice-tracking disasters???? I heard a station once that had a VERY funny computer malfunction....no music played, just the jock breaks.....this happened in the middle of the night and lasted a REALLY long time...

Anyways, I am lookin forward to rockin out to some Iron Maiden Saturday night.....

Sounds GREAT!!

I will there was something like that when I was there!
