Anybody remember the old Ernest P. Worrell Braum's Commercials?

I remember Ernest P. Worrell, but not from the Braum's ads (which don't even have stores in my area). He did various commercials for various local and national businesses. Here in the Tampa Bay area, Ernest was spokesperson for the old 620 WSUN radio station, back when they were country.

"Ernest" also did commercials for Cleveland State University Vikings College Basketball telecasts on the old WCLQ-61 in Cleveland

You mean, this?

I also remember seeing that WSUN picnic ad that was linked above in one of Dick Clark's NBC bloopers shows in the late '90s--apparently Ernest must have burned his tongue even worse on his "world famous hushpuppy recipe" in an earlier take of that commercial.

In Memphis he did ads for WHBQ (then ABC) 13's Eyewitness News, and in Nashville for Purity Milk.

I believe Purity Milk was Ernest's first gig -- after they became very popular, the ad agency began to offer Ernest to anyone in the country that thought may be a great fit for their product, service, or station.

Where TV stations are concerned -- in addition to the aforementioned WCLQ, Ernest also did ads for WDBJ Roanoke and KMOL San Antonio (or was it KTVX Salt lake City? Both used the same channel 4 logo). The ads for those two stations were featured on home video collections of Ernest's commercials.

Though I would thought he would have been used to it after doing it many times for various clients.

Jim Varney did ads for Oakhurst Dairy in Maine back in the 1980s. He even appeared at a Maine Guides AAA-level baseball game in Old Orchard Beach once. I don't remember if he ever did any ads here in Connecticut.

Even though the movie was pretty bad, I thought he did well as Jed Clampett.

He also did similar spots for Cream O'Weber dairy in Utah.
My engineer friend, Vic Hamrick, and I always stared every phone call with "Hey, Vern!"

They were hilarious.

In the SF Bay Area, Ernest did ads for the short-lived 'Cousins' furniture chain(which may have also done business elsewhere), but I don't recall him doing any spots for car dealers or TV stations.

Varney once did a plug on drunk driving. Vern is "seen" as drunk and shakey (camera effect). Varney, in a serious shift of character, demands Vern turn over the car keys.

Re this thread: Worrell's name rings a bell with me, but I can't remember where I saw or heard him. Spent my childhood in the NYC/LI market, then moved out west. Spent lots of time on extended visits to family and friends in the Pittsburgh and Chicago markets. Also visited Los Angeles on several occasions.

...after WCGV/24 Milwaukee dropped the SelecTV pay service in 1984, they hired Varney to do a batch of "Channel 24 is workin' nights!" spots for them...

They also used the Ernest character for Cerritos Auto Square ads here in the Los Angeles area during the 80s and 90s.

He did TV ads for John L. Sullivan Chevrolet in the Sacramento area back in the mid-late 80s. I suppose it was to give Cal Worthington a run for his money in crazy car ads.
