Anybody remember when radio was fun?

I know there are lots of folks out there who hate what radio has become in America. Corporations, hundreds of stations with the same owners, bland programming, voice-tracking, liner cards, nobody willing to take any risks, WAY too much automation, satellite, etc etc.

As a kid, I listened to AM radio with real (LIVE) disk jockys, a lot of whom were funny and very entertaining without crude and rude comments and blue language. Most owners were local and in the station every day and programming was geared to the local community. There was a sense of family at the station and everyone from the overnight weekend jock to the General Manager were working together to have the best darn station they could. There's just not that kind of fun, family radio around much anymore and I for one, miss it. Let me say here that I have been making a living in radio since I was 15 years old and still believe fun radio can happen, if the stations (and owners) really want to do it. I know the listeners would love it.

If you remember the "good ol' days" of Top 40 radio and would like to be a part of a new station with old fashioned family values and WANT TO HAVE FUN AGAIN, please drop me a line and tell me you want to work for a station like that again or for the first time. I have the station. Do you want to be a part of a radio station FAMILY? I believe a together we could build a new station that everyone would be proud of. Dreams can come true, you know. Thanks,

Simian,

Forgive the paranoia but this sounds too good, setting a noose to strangle the good guys that are left and keeping their head down?

Your right, This sounds to good to be true. I started out with an AM Back in the early seventies when radio was fun. What station do you have simian and what are you looking for?

Thanks for the tremendous response to my post. Be assured that I am no devil in the dark working for one of the corporate giants. I would love to hear from some sales types that would never get the chance to start and build a sales department in the corporate world. If you are now second banana and would like to be the top banana as a sales manager, drop me a line. Must be willing to have fun!

A little more about the station. It will be a mom and pop operation with only one station in our group. Everybody who works here will be the best and work with the best (notice I said work WITH). Are you ready to kiss corporate radio goodbye?

Launch is still a few months away. It's gonna be fun. I can't wait.

Well I had posted a thread asking what ever happened to Oldies 700 in Dothan. This cat responded to that post, now he's posting this, of course when one goes to oldies700.com they are redirected to oldies700.net hyping some oldies web stream that will start in the new year. Doesn't take a genius to see that two and two adds up to five. Those who are skeptical well should be.

Do some research guys. Simian = Quitman, MS. A dark station. Now these oldies 700 posts and website. IS the real station still dark?

when i see a post reminiscing about how great *RADIO USE'TA BE, BACK IN THE DAY* i usually have one thought:

"if it sux that bad, get out."

yer either part of the problem or part of the solution and radio people who spend much of their time openly griping about how awful radio is, consolidation sucks, voicetracking bites, budget cuts this & that.....................it occours to me they probably devote a lot of energy and emotion whining about radio instead of doing their part to make it better. their idea of the glory daze of radio was sitting in a studio, phone screwing radio groupies...........but hey it was **LIVE & LOCAL** so it was better

and i do know this: successful, entertaining, creative and interesting radio people are spending 99% of their time making great radio. sour grapes types are on these boards criticizing their industry. imagine putting some of that time and energy into.....................getting better at what u do

Ok I think we have established this is an utter fraud?

tvradioworld.com reports 700 as dark, the entire scene surrounding this station defines sketchy.

Longtime observer to this board just recently turned poster, so whom or what is this quitman, ms

Interesting comments. Funny thing is, none of you are even close to what's about to happen. Fraud is a pretty strong word. And what is Quitman, MS? Believe me, it's a real station I'm talking about (and in Dothan, AL.) Yes, it is dark right now while the studios are being rebuilt. All of the people working here think there is a need to get back to live, local, personality and FUN radio. That's why all of us work here. The team is almost together. We are going to have a station unlike any other in this area. Do a little more research on oldies700.net and please listen to our pre-sign on web stream whan it gets up and running in a few days.

The comment "it occours to me they probably devote a lot of energy and emotion whining about radio instead of doing their part to make it better. Their idea of the glory daze of radio was sitting in a studio, phone screwing radio groupies...........but hey it was **LIVE & LOCAL** so it was better obbviously" is completely missing the point. We are not stuck in the past. We ARE doing something to make radio better! There's a lot of talent in radio today. Too bad most of them don't get a chance to be creative and have fun. Being live and local takes a lot of work.

Any earlier comments were not meant to be "sour grapes" or whatever, but just an observiation of the general state of radio today. From the e-mails I received, a lot of people agree with me there has to be a better way. I've been making a living in radio for over 30 years and happened on a good opportunity to work for a station that's going to try something different. I'm excited to be working with these folks. Stay tuned.

This continues to stink to high heaven, especially since I figured out what the Quitman reference is about. There seem to be two types in radio today, carpetbaggers who try to buy everything in sight or con men who try and get over on people. Sometimes its hard to distinguish between the two.

You are exactly right cc917! The good ones with more smarts than I who had options got out long ago and left it to the poor souls who still want to do the right thing but the carpetbaggers kicked them out if they didn't shut up... so if the industry wasn't in such poor shape then people wouldn't be posting the whining crap on this board. By the way, has anyone noticed that the closer to Christmas we got the fewer the postings there are...people still have to provide Christmas so they're keeping their heads down. Hope all of you have a Very Merry Christmas (even the carpetbaggers).

they are here whining BECAUSE they couldn't make it in radio (or have already peaked and aren't willing to step up their attitude and their performance to compete on a higher level)

Didn't the captain of the Titanic insist that everything was OK...which ship are you the captain of radiofriend? Sounds like you're trying to convince yourself more than anyone else, but hang in there with the positives a better day will come soon...it really is darkest before the dawn.

The only ones wining are you two. Some of us carpetbaggers as you call us, have spent more time on a tiolet than you have in radio.

No whining here, just merely seeking to give me opinion on the merits of this thread, of which I think there is none.

Good luck simian, I hope everything works out the way that you have invisioned it to be! If you need any help, Post your needs. I think what your trying to do is great! And would be a refreshing change in radio today. Any attempt to put fun back in radio should be encouraged,GOOD JOB

Yes good luck with Oldies 700! I look forward to hearing it. Bring back the fun!

Yeah, I do remember when Radio was fun. That would be beFORE LMA's, Duopolies and the mass raping of our industry by the likes of Kleer Chunnel and the rest of the broadcast vacuum cleaners who've sucked up all the stations in most markets.

Remember the great "Radio Wars" between different outlets and owners? It was WNOE vs. WTIX in New Orleans, KLIF and its competitors in Dallas and many more. Now, THAT was FUN!

Today, the only competition is usually within "pods". (God, I hate that name. Orcas swim in pods; radio shouldn't be in any.) Those of you who work within a five, six or seven station "pod" are mere 'droids going through the motions. No insult intended, but, that's what it is.

The one thing I pray for every day? That Congress will break up these monopolies, a la AT&T in the '80s, and return radio to more DIFFERENT owners...good and bad. At least, back in the day, we did have fun. >>sigh<<

Unfortunatly the only chance of that happening is if Hillary gets in office. Bill has said several times that he was sorry for ever signing it in.
