I've only passed through Sonora on my way out to Fort Stockton up when my Dad was living in Midland in the early 80's and the rest of us were in San Antonio. I don't remember any radio stations being there.

what the heck did ya listen to on the radio during the trip?

Well back then, it would have been cassettes. Mostly my sister and I just slept. It's a boring drive once you get West of San Antonio. The last time I made the drive was in 98 and I listened to CD's. I remember a country station somewhere around the 94 frequency that is in Fort Stockton, but that's the only one I remember picking up. I didn't try the AM band.

Yea, they changed calls..........some sort of scandal with the Foster family
they were interesting. Art was a man with demons. His dad was gay, and lived
the the GM of the chain, a guy named fred, who was also gay. What a strange
group. Had stations in Ozona too. I was wondering what happened to all of them

Are you talking about Walt Foster in San Angelo? Never knew the guy, just used to hear about him when I worked out there for awhile. He had KIXY, a real powerhouse back in the day.....

Walt was a really nice guy. He passesd away a few years back...like more than 10 now. Art passed away too. I had heard he was on the air at KIXY one weekend when he died. Apparently Adopho found him in the control room.

His Heart. He was on a transplant list off in Florida for a while...started smoking again and his insurance dropped him. That is when he went back to Angelo. That's the way I had heard the story anyway.

Never heard of Kent......... but Art was sort of young to have a bad ticker
could the stories be true about being birthed by a relative? that would cause
birth defects. The family story is made for TV movie stuff. But i never said they were
bad people, very nice, but very complex. It's a mystery that haunts me to this day
27 years after i worked for them. The KIXY thing really ate at them, when i worked for them
they swore they were swindled out of the radio station, and fighting to get it back.
told me to hang tight in Sonora, and when they got it back, i was gonna be there
morning guy........but Sonora didn't want us around

well i was hoping more people knew the Foster's and could fill in the blanks for me......
didn't want it to seem mean, just interesting

When I worked at KIXY in '89 we had a translator channel in Sonora or was simulcast on KHOS? I remember having to do the ID.

I was at KIXY in '89 too (overnights). I figured Walt had probably passed by now, but my real surprise was that Jay Michaels and Jeff Rottman are still going strong there, 20+ years on.

Art died in 1990 or 1991. I was doing work for the station at the time, and yes, he was on the air when he died. Walton died a few years later (in 1995). Walton was good friends with my parents, and I was at his funeral and also Art's.

As far as the KHOS deal, I never really heard what happened with that, so can't help you there.

They could have been the first , radio, made for TV family. I remember Walt telling me about being a big time weatherman on a local TV station in San Angelo. And Art, whe i got off the air at KVRN, would meet me with a bottle and a bag, and we would drink and smoke. I heard some crazy shit, but i never forgot it. Years went by, and i started to wonder. And yes, Walt was so nice to me, and knew i was a kid. He tried to show me how to become a local legend, but other factors ( fred, and art ) would get all pissy. Never figured out why they wouldn't help groom a talent. I remember he would show up in Sonora, and see me sitting on those trailer steps, and yell out, " what owner puts his people in better places?" then laugh and wave. It was his ' hang in there' way to say things. I guess you never forget what shaped you in radio.
