John:
I just now noticed this post.
Leo Laporte, the Internet and tech host, uses webcams and such in addition to his Internet stream and nationally syndicated program. They sell only three sponsors for every half hour.
I don't know how their sales program is set up, but his outfit earned somewhere around 4 million, according to a recent Radio World article.
Big D Country is probably more like the majority of Internet stations - struggling to attract business. We are represented by a couple of agencies, but even so, we usually earn only a couple hundred dollars or so every month.
I try to keep all our breaks to 2 minutes or less. Generally the first spot(s) are national buys,
then the last one is a local, or a per-inquiry. Some PIs perform well; some pull nothing. Last week one PI brought the station $112.
As far as local sales, they are still negligible, and we've had one local business totally stiff us and another bounced their check. Now I'm leaning toward having most locals be handled through local ad agencies.
I've pretty much resigned myself to the fact that I'm not going to be able to make a decent living with Internet radio, which is why I have a separate business that's not related to radio. Although I've just started it, I'm pretty sure it will financially outperform the Internet station in a fairly short time.
