Anyone been to Country Radio Seminar??

Thinking about going in '08, but seems like a major expense!!! Has anyone been there before? Can you give me an idea of what to expect? I mean, I know what their press release says; I'm looking for first-hand accounts from radio folks...

TIA,

Cleavo

You already missed the earlybird rate. It expired on Nov. 30th. It is an expense. I had my GM pick up a chunk of it though. My opinion: It can be nothing tbut a big "Look at me" cicle jerk. It can also be a valuable place to meet a lot of people in our industry. For me it resulted in strengthening my relationships with some of my label reps. Not to mention some kick ass shows. Saw Bon Jovi with 700 people, saw Little big town and John Mellencamp singing "Pink Houses" at the Stage on Broadway, Gary Allan, Big and Rich, etc, etc., etc. A worth it expense if you spend your time right. My .02 cents

It's a major expense, but you will learn a ton and make some great contacts. I am on the beach at the moment and am currently working on a assembling the bucks to make it to Nashville again for the next CRS.

The great shows are too many to mention...Montgomery Gentry at 12th and Porter. Keith Urban playing a fantastic set for about a thousand people. The RCA show on "the boat" is usually a mindblowing experience...and the New Faces show always kills!

My only tip is to not stay out so late that you miss the early sessions the next morning!

You really should try and attend at least one CRS.....Country Radio Seminar....! But, don't plan on gettin much sleep. There are several seminar rooms with different subjects you can attend...or take in a little of all of them.....the luncheon shows are usually good ones sponsored by ASCAP....or a record label. The labels will entice you to come out and party all over Nashville in the evening plugging their latest new up and coming country act !!!

Pace yourself if you go !!! There is a TON to see and do.

Cleavo, if you come to CRS, please introduce yourself to me and I'll try to make sure you have the most productive CRS you can have.
We are a non-profit organization, so the only reason it costs as much as it does is because that's what it costs us. Registration now only pays somewhat less than half our costs. More than half are paid by sponsors. Sound, lights and production for major acts is expensive.... not to mention Convention Center catering. Would you believe a $12 hot dog? Not that we serve hot dogs (anymore). You may not have to buy anything to eat and drink your entire stay.
Thanks everyone else for the good comments.
I hope to see you all at CRS!

Hi Ed,

Please don't misunderstand - did not mean to imply in any way that the event was over-priced or not valuable. Was just looking for some feedback from other jocks who had been before to better inform my decision.

If I do end up going, I will certainly look you up!

Thanks,

Cleavo

I hate radio conventions and I went a few years ago cause my station owner told me I was going. I had a blast. I love the history of Nashville, and country music. You'll see a ton of artists doing everything from performing to just sitting around in the hotel lobby. I'd go again in a second.

I too have been to many CRS conventions. The magic is really gone. The conventions were designed as any convention would be to allow radio programmers to see not only what the new products that affected their business was, but to observe new talent being showcased. The years at Opryland were great. The Reniassance sucks. I was part of the transition. I'm sure you like plastic Chicken too!

In the early years, many of the sessions were valuable. In recent years, none of the programmers go to the sessions. If you want to meet a programmer, they're in the bar starting at 8am. It has become what the CRB did not want it to become.......a "catch all" for anyone who has a record. Unfortunately, technology allows us to record singles at home on our computers........and the CRB will take your registration fee if you think Country Radio will play it. Lots of people have dreams and should continue to do so.

Ed is genuine and solid. It's an event that is past it's prime when people are spending more time reading what I have to say than what they heard at CRS.

I'm generally not this negative, but it's the truth.
