Anyone Else Hearing WJNL-1210 Overnight ?

Have recently heard a talk station ripping the heck out of WPHT (ex-WCAU) in Phillie during the overnight hours. This morning, I was able to loop out WPHT and got a good ID on this... At 1 AM this morning it ID'd as WJML-1110 Petosky and WJNL-1210 Kingsley, MI. WJML-1110 is supposed to be 10 watts at night while WJNL-1210 supposed to be OFF at night. Somebody is obviously not pulling the plug on WJNL-1210 at sunset.

You're right....but they are not supposed to be running commercials during such times and these "experimental" broadcasts should be announced as such.

They are not supposed to be running commercials but they are not required to make an announcement stating they are testing

So stations that run reduced power overnight CAN run full power for DX tests. I have yet to actually log a station running a DX test, though.

What about stations that run reduced power in the daytime, but increase their power at night? Is there any possiblity for daytime groundwave DX tests? For example, a station 7 miles from me, 760 KFMB San Diego, CA, is licensed for 5kW non-directional in the daytime, and at night is 50kW directional with 3 towers and a null aimed toward Detroit, MI. What would be some ways for that station to run a DX test? Could they maybe operate with their nighttime facilities in the middle of the day? (I've heard them do it on a few occasions - they just splattered a little wider than usual on my radio.) Or, could they operate 50kW non-directional at night for a DX test, or phase their antenna so the null is to the west, not to the east? Or would WJR complain too loudly if KFMB did a DX test like that?

My understanding is that the phasing equipment for most AM stations are networks of coils and related electronic components and there may be some provision for fine-tuning the pattern, but normally not to "flip" a signal pattern 180 degrees. As for the higher power, depending on how the switching gear is set up, it may or may not be possible to run 50kW omnidirectionally...the tower should have no problem, but is the coaxial cable to the 5kW omnidirectional tower designed to handle 50kW? It's more than flipping a switch... Of course, the engineers could manually connect the 50kW transmitter directly to the omni tower, bypassing the directional phasing network...

Well.....The WJNL-1210 "test" as gr8oldies calls it, continued overnight this morning (8/6) heard here in Central KY. The Alan Comes Talk show was heard from 12:30 to 1 AM followed by ID and News and Lots of network commercials.... At 5 AM, I once again heard news and local weather for the Traverse City area AND again, commercials. Sounds like "regular" broadcasting to me. This has been going on for several nights. Wonder how much longer this "test" will continue? ;) ;) ;)
