Anyone else notice that EEI . . .

is already disowning the 850 call-sign? It's obvious that they will be doing something else with the signal; if they were to continue the simulcast, I'm sure they would at least acknowledge its presence. Any guesses what they will do?

Not sure but I will say that for now at least the phone numbers are still in effect with the 0850 as part of them. No "779-0937" just yet.
Fybush was guessing MAYBE WRKO could move to 850, slightly better signal in Metro West though Mark of BRW said no, you'd still be getting a mixture of a French lang station from Montreal. If they did, 680 could become the WEEI simulcast perhaps with some ESPN mixed in. But many are saying WEEI wouldn't necessarily do an "ESPN 24/7" broadcast on AM. It would take listeners away from FM 93.7 (but in some
ways you could say it could take listeners away from Sports Hub--like in elections where a "straw" candidate
would take away some voters--"Tim Cahill would draw votes away from Charlie Baker and help to
re-elect Patrick; ESPN on AM would take some listeners away from Sports Hub")

But how many? Not TOO many.
Format possibilities exist (and would 850 be sold? Salem Comm. wouldn't mind religion on there
perhaps...)
True Oldies
Business? (RKO already mining this with midday show)
New home for RKO? 680 could be ESPN or biz radio
Spanish language? Perhaps with ESPN Deportes as part of it
Soul/black talk/ black oriented
Who knows.

WHDH!!! Seriously, I hope not around the clock ESPN. What a boring network. Yahoo Sports is more entertaining & engaging if not as well-known.

I have no dog in this fight, because I do not live in Boston....but there's no 850 in Montreal anymore, is there?

cd

No there isn't, and there hasn't been for about a decade, and the frequency is unlikely to be reactivated up there, making 850 a much cleaner signal in most of MetroWest than 680, which doesn't exist after dark in Framingham or points west most nights.

I think you'll see, within the next few years, WRKO become more of a business station and WEEI 850 become focused on ESPN, perhaps with Sox and Celts play-by-play continuing Whether they switch frequencies or not, who knows? Oh, and when does the Sox contract with EEI expire?

More biz radio would make sense

The Sox contract was settled in May of '06 and beginning the following season it was supposed to be primarily RKO, some games on EEI. Obviously just about all games wound up on EEI when sports hub debuted. The contract was to be for 10 years, but I thought I read it got extended, a re-negotiation
of terms? Thus I don't know for sure when it ends. Otherwise it would expire at end of 2016 season.

As for a poss switch of RKO and EEI:
RKO has poss a bit of trouble in Metro West with start of AM drive show, but otherwise they prob do
well with Finn & Fein, Ingraham, Lunch Money, Brien, and most of Howie's show. We are getting earlier
sunsets--but hey WCRN is there to help Howie out in Metro West. After that is syndie: Savage, Doyle,
and Red Eye Radio. Does WRKO want to switch to 850 just so those shows do better in metro
west after dark? I'd think AM and PM drive are most important. After 7, who cares? And now that the
Sox are no longer primarily on RKO (there's a Sox network anyway), it's not like post-sunset is a major
worry for Entercom re: 680.

Sounds like a misunderstanding. The French-language station in Montreal that might have interfered with WRKO is a) currently dark and b) not on 680. It was on 690. After it went from CBC ownership to private ownership (before going dark), it moved from the old 690/940 site, where it was ND, to the former site of CFCF 600, where it used a two-tower array that, to a rather slight extent, protected the US border. Once that change was made, I don't think the interference from Montreal on 690 was sufficient to have much effect on listening to 680 in greater Boston.

Was pretty sure he was referring to WEEI problems (850) not WRKO, but I know the 690 you're
referring to. It would come in clearly by day in Burlington VT (despite any moves to protect the border,
but maybe it indeed was more intrusive with the old antennae) and I'm talking up there in Burl VT
rather than here.

quite usefl as you can wait for anncrs to raise their voice then look at TV and see the play 5, 6 seconds later

As I mentioned in a thread somewhere here--would be in breakroom at work, while they still allowed
a TV to be on, and they had a baseball playoff. Listening to it via WEEI 850 at the time (ESPN radio).
Home run!

"This guy's gonna hit a home run, watch..."

btw:
--During Pats game, WBZ-FM kept running a pre-recorded liner saying they were Boston's only FM
sports station. Obviously not the case any more, and maybe they could make a case that WMKK
is lic. to Lawrence...but supposedly it does serve the Boston market. Time to pull that? My guess is
they won't...they'll try not to refer to "brand X" (WEEI) and its move to FM

--Note Jim Cutler's voice in promos: "WEEI on FM". Not "WEEI-FM" (as in legal ID/call letters) because
they don't officially have them yet. WMKK, WMKK HD1 Lawrence-Boston still being mentioned.
