Anyone else notice the music changes at WFNX????

I've noticed that FNX has been making some changes. I've been listening to the station a lot since 2007 and have noticed some certain changes. My Dad remembers the FNX glory days in the 80s by the way.

-FNX used to have a lot more throwbacks on their playlist. Celebrating 25 years of FNX - remember that. I don't hear that anymore and there are less throwback songs.

-Leftover Lunch has changed a little. Used to focus on a lot of indie/new wave 80s hits along with some rap crossovers. (Run-DMC, Tone Loc, De La Soul, Cypress Hill, Nina Cherry.) These have kind of dissappeared off the LL playlist. Also they played some songs from the late 70s more often back in the day- like Surrender and Cherry Bomb

-And who is remembers this summer when FNX was playing CLASSIC ROCK- AHHHHH!!!! This made me so angry. They didn't play that music back when it was popular. I guess the station manager was targeting the older generations but that must have failed since thankfully they stopped playing it. Seriously- Bob Dylan, The Who, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Hendrix do not belong on FNX. 100.7 is for that stuff. I can only imagine how pissed the DJs were last summer when they had to play some of this stuff.

-Currently it seems like FNX is playing a lot more indie music which is GREAT! When FNX was around in the 80s they were playing all the new stuff, not stuff from 10 years ago. I think they are moving in the right direction. WBOS-92.9 plays all the 90s alt. rock constantly so if one can go there for that.

In the end, I am a little dissapointed with Leftover Lunch but oh well, it makes the show more special since you don't hear much of that stuff on the radio anymore. This isn't much of a big deal but my BEASTIE BOYS aren't getting played as much anymore. BCN is gone, WBOS seems to never play them, and now FNX doesn't play them as much. Oh well.

What do you guys think about WFNX right now?

I personally think they sound much better than they were sounding in 2007-2009. Lots more newer music, and they are breaking lots of newer indie bands again (currently The Temper Trap, The XX, Beach House, Broken Bells, Regina Spektor, etc all in main rotation) as you mentioned. Also, bands that have established indie core like Silversun Pickups, MGMT, Gorillaz etc. get several tracks played instead of just one or two. Paul Driscoll has a new music show from 11pm-Midnight called "Nightly News" that is SUPERB. Even more new music that barely gets the light of day anywhere else. I suggest you listen to it if you haven't already. With regard to Leftover Lunch, I don't think it has changed that much...it's always been really hit or miss for me, depending on what kind of mood Julie K is in on that day. Some days it's hit after hit, others it's not so good...but it's still a mainstay on FNX and will continue to be. The gold selections in rotation are pretty good, too- Heard New Order's "Age of Consent" and The Cure's "Let's Go to Bed" the other day. One more thing, the ADD Weekend is a fun idea getting the listeners involved and hearing songs that you don't hear that often, I like it. And it's legit - the WFNX Facebook page takes the requests and I've gotten my name mentioned and the song played, as well as my little cousin calling up and getting his played as well..

The Beastie Boys do not belong on rock radio. I change the station every time they come on.

What do you mean that WBOS never seems to play them? Since their changeover (I never thought I would miss the former WBOS so much), it seems that whenever I'm scanning the dial Radio 92.9 is playing a Beastie Boys song.

I find WBOS unlistenable. They barely play any new music it seems. It's always a tired 90's song...

As far as the Beastie Boys go, I personally think the material from Paul's Boutique on up is experimental enough to fit the format, but the earlier stuff is a little too frat-oriented. Of course, the early stuff seems to get the most play, and the audience seems to react favorably to it, so I'd still play it.

Glad to hear WFNX continuing to stay in the right direction after making failed attempts to cater to the masses last year.

Approval for WFNX playing a lot more interesting indie rock !
Disapproval for Beastie Boys. Don't care if i ever hear another Beastie track ever again. I'll bet Eminem would test better anyway.

I've really liked the direction that WFNX has gone lately. It seems that since around November, they've been playing more newer, up-and-coming music, but still sprinkles in a few nuggets from the 80s and early 90s. I think during the summer, when they were playing the occasional classic rock or active rock tune (they did play Three Days Grace, Finger Eleven, and Shinedown for a brief period last year), they were perhaps going after WBCN listeners that had just lost their station. They are sounding much better, and the addition of Adam 12 is a plus. I am a little upset about losing the Sandbox morning show, but their current morning show seems to be sounding okay. There are several currents that they do kill, and a bunch of songs that are about a year old getting near-current airplay ("Sex On Fire," "Pork and Beans," etc.) which tends to cause burn out for me. But overall, they're doing much better!

Agreed. That station doesn't seem to bring anything to the table. Just mindless repetition of the 90's.
