Anyone ever had this type of problem?

I work at a Christian station that plays CCM. We are in a liberal city. (Verry!) The local newspaper made a special pull out section for the new College students on what to do in the area etc etc. There was this one section that had Area Radio Stations. It listed ALL stations...but ours. (After being rated the 2nd most listened too Commercial station in their newspaper by their readers)

This isn't the first time something like this happened. I've Emailed the Editor..of course no response.

Be pretty interesting to hear other stories like this.

Have a good week!

We have had a similar thing happen here. There's a local business journal that publishes the top rated radio stations in the market and they have always left us out of the list even though we rank 4th overall! In their defense they are strictly going off of the commercial Arbitron numbers.

I finally got through to one of their staff who is a Christian and they are going to work us in on the next list.

That often happens with non-commercial stations like Moody that have a lot of listeners but either because they're non-commercial and/or don't subscribe to the Arbitron ratings, they're left out of columns like the one you've described.

To reach a college audience, make sure the station's programming is targeted to reach people under 25. See what ministries are active on the college campuses and partner with them in their outreach events. A station-sponsored "Battle of the Bands" concert is a great way to reach students and introduce them to the station. Most people new to an area are going to flip around the dial to find something good so not being listed in a print article probably isn't really a big deal in the grand scheme of things nor is it an indicator of the station's success.

Great suggestions. But I partly disagree w/

In an exposure-driven business like ours, it counts more when the deeds you do are noticed & respected.

I'd send the paper's editor & columnist each a promotional goody bag. Did other non-mainstream stations also get omitted? If not, perhaps there's an unspoken bias to overcome. You could also have your GM, PD, or Station Manager write a letter to the editor, shamelessly plugging the good promotions you've hosted in the community, as well as the next big event. Simultaneously, write a similar shameless letter to the editor of the paper's competition, along w/ thanks for recognizing ALL local media.

Overall, "word of mouth" will get you farthest. But recognition & respect are good things. 8)

We had something like that happen years ago. I called the person who handled that part of the paper, had to go through a few people to find the one who would make the difference. It wasn't the editor that I talked to. I found that the stations had to request to be put on the list, so hunt around and find the proper person. It was probably not intentional.
