Anyone ever heard of this former Cincinnati PD

I ran across an old engineer buddy of mine in Ky, and he was doing some work for Clear Channel and asked me if i knew of an old Cincinnati PD by the name of CC Matthews? I said i didn't but i would get on radio-info and ask around.

He said CC was currently looking for a gig, he had his resumes posted and needed some feedback.

So Cincinnati radio community, has anyone heard of CC Matthews?

Thanks so much,

CC, not to be confused with Cheap Channel, made his rounds in this market in the 80's at some AC stations, most notably WINK. He was closely associated with the Ted McAllister, E.Alvin Davis and Dickie Shannon gang that emerged from
WSAI when it went Country in 1979. CC moved onto Louisville, then returned briefly to host a morning talk-show on 1230. Since I live north of Galbraith
Road, I could never hear it, and I don't know how long he lasted there.

CC's a good guy who like many radio veterans is nearing that age when nobody wants you or wants to pay you what you are worth.

CC's back in town along with his (and my!) former GM

Business Courier story this week says that CC is now PD at MAX-FM, 97-7 and 99-5. They've set up shop in Tri-County. His former WINK GM Jim Wood is also out of retirement to run it. CC was PD from the very start at WINK in 1985. Jim Wood was also there for a long time and was a UC play-by-play guy when WSAI had the Bearcats in the 90s. CC hired me to do part time at WINK in 92 when I was let go in the sale of the old WOFX.

CC didn't do a show on 1230. He was PD when BOB first went talk. He hosted mornings on 1160 before Bill Bennett came along.
Edited by JeffDavis98 on 01/17/06 06:55 PM.

Generally, he was a nice guy, and a bit of a micro manager, but not in a mean sort of way. He was just a stickler for formatics and "sound". I never had a problem with the way he treated me, and I never heard others complain about him. Decent knowledge of radio programming basics. When I was at WINK, one of our slogans was, "A better mix of light rock, with less talk and less repetition". I don't know if this was CCs idea or not, but it was very successful. They turned it into a phone-out contest. The station would call people, and if they answered the phone with the slogan, they won some money and got entered for a bigger prize. Without going into details (boring!), I know first-hand that a lot of people had that phrase burned into their heads. WINK emerged the second survivor of a FOUR-WAY AC battle. Obviously, WARM 98 was the other survivor. 95-W-LITE (now MOJO 94.9) and Magic 92 (now the FOX) bit the dust in 1988 and 1991 (or 1992), respectively. He was replaced by Dave Mason after the Clear Channel takeover. Jim Wood was a good guy, too.

I remember Jim McKnight was at WWNK when it started up and if I remember he was on 10-2. Wasn't he the PD at first or am I mistaken?

He was the Operations Director for WWNK-AM/FM. WWNK-AM ran satellite oldies as "K-ROCK", and later became WSAI.

Re: CC's back in town along with his (and my!) former GM

If I remember correctly, (and I may not) Jim McKnight was Operations Manager for WINK and WSAI, which became WWNK-AM. The AM eventually became Oldies K-Rock and then WSAI again and Jim ran those. He also was PD and morning host with Jim LaBarbra when it was sports.

I think CC had been PD at W-Lite, and came back to Cincinnati after a stop at WGCL in Indy. He was PD from the start at WINK.

WIKS Indy was prior to W-Lite. Then to WGCL Cleveland and a stop in St. Louis before Wink. It's great to hear that CC is back in Cinti.

I got directly to the article without registering. Notice who wrote the story? Dan Monk, who was an excellent news guy at WWNK, and a good person to work with, as well.

I thought I read on this board that the proposed city of license for WOXY would be Mason, but the stick would still be up north, in the Monroe/Springboro area, which would not significantly improve its signal. Any word on the proposed move of 99.5 from Ripley to Amelia? Wouldn't that be hard to do, because Ripley would be left without a radio license?

I hope CC focuses the music a bit more. You really can't play a 60s Stones song and go back-to-back with Kelly Clarkson and expect listeners to stick around. I would ditch the disco and current teen stuff, and focus more on rock hits from the 60s to now. You can still play a wide variety, which builds your cume, but keep your TSL up.

Then again, if First plans to sell it, it doesn't really matter what they do in the short term.

Wouldn't this defeat the whole purpose of the format?

Re: CC's back in town along with his (and my!) former GM

It's great to hear that CC is back in town...do you think CC will be able to turn MAX around?

The proposed tower site is on the border between Monroe and Middletown. The 60dBu service contour and site are on this map.
http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/FMTV-service-area?x=FM1105918.html

The move of 99.5 must have been dropped. I can't find any records of an allocation proceeding for Ripley or Amelia.

Re: CC's back in town along with his (and my!) former GM

How long before CBS flips on of its stations to Jack and beats First to the punch? Unless they can cover a good portion on the market with its signal including Northern KY, Max will remain a stranger to the market.
