Re: Anyone have any ideas or know why kbzt fm 94.9 dropped so much? Yes, I do!

(I hope you aren't referring just to 12+).

Just a guess, but I reckon the reason KBZT has dropped is:

A rejuvinated 91X
KPRI
Rock 105-3
Star 94.1
100.7 JACK FMTM

At least two of the above have debuted rather recently. I remember a staff meeting we had at KKLQ years ago, after we had revamped the format. The GM told us "Well, the research people tuned in to hear the changes, but didn't stay, and went back to their old station." I suspec t (again, can only guess) that this is what happend to KBZT. People tuned in to hear what all the fuss was about. But then, they settled back in to Star, or JACK, or 91X, and forgot about KBZT.

And now they have Sophie to deal with too (but not in that book, huh?)
Either way, the phrase "it's getting crowded in here" comes to mind!

So, who's kicking tires about Oldies, again?

Yes you would think their policy of "no last names for DJ's" would make them so cool everyone would tune in. Didn't that no-last-names thing work well for American Gladiator, Sting, Seal and Yanni? Oh, right, that was last century.....

The Alternative rock listener is

A) Hard to contact, fewer of them have land-lines.
B) If they lack landlines there is no way to fill out a diary.
C) I-Pods are huge with this demographic
D) The format is no longer fresh
E) A lot of 18-34's listen to Hip Hop, Rock & Alternative. They
are less format partisan.
F) Not impressed with radio

Moreover the local classic tracks that 94/9 really capitalized on are getting tired.
Alternative Rock in general is not on the cutting edge in 2007.

Winner, winner, winner. OK Bob, tell him what is behind door number three!

There is too many stations with the same format, 94.9 has to figure they have to flip, there is not enough listeners to have this many hot ac/aaa stations

94/9 sounds pretty good to me. One of the few listenable stations in the San Diego airwaves. Like those new Beck and Bruce Springsteen songs. Needs to play more adult rock like this and less of the depressing rock crud.

Good guesses, but everyone is wrong.

The entire reason why KBZT dropped suddenly (And why it's back up again) is because of their insider DJ program. This winter/spring, they started a program where they let a listener pick three songs to play at the end of every hour 9-5 weekdays. Many of these choices were bizzare, to say the least, and did not flow very well with their regular programming.

And this went on for how many months, until all of the sudden they announced they were dropping the insider DJ program indefinitely.

Of course it was great for us true music fans, but it completely killed their ratings.

Props to them to trying it out, though.

Nice try yourself but its doubtful that this was the reason. If we were already using PPM it
could be.

Then why wouldn't 91X have had a similar down-and-up like 94.9 did? All the reasons that you mentioned apply to alternative radio in general, not just FM 94.9 (except for the classic tracks they capitalized on, but they're still doing that).
