Anyone hear 1090 from Mexico early in the AM?

Well, at least I think it's coming from Mexico, the station has the best signal when the radio's antenna is turned almost exactly towards San Diego/Tijuana. And when it's strong it drowns out KAAY from Little Rock. It does not come in every night, perhaps once a week, and I'm not always up that early, like around 4am Central Time. Perhaps the station has been having troubles with their directional antenna? I thought it might be KMXA in Aurora, Colorado running their 50kW at night for testing purposes but they never give an ID, so I suspect it's a Mexican station. Anyone have any ideas?

By the way, I heard KNX briefly on 1070 rising through the jumble a few days ago..."KNX 1070 Newsradio" was the ID. That was also in the 4am hour....

If its Spanish, its not San Diego/Tijuana. They run all sports in English.

BTW, maybe its just me, but it seems KAAY's signal has really deteriorated in recent years.

KAAY's signal indeed has very much deteriorated. If I'm not mistaken doesn't 690 in Tijuana run sports & 1090 still run spanish?
Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

I believe 690 no longer runs sports. 1090 does. I think they were the Padres' flagship at one time, if they are not still that.

Yes, 690 now XEWW runs all Spanish newstalk from it's network based in Mexico City. The XEWW studios are in Burbank, Ca. The 7 tower transmitter site is now south of Rosarito Beach, BCN.

OK I stand corrected. I haven't been out that way in a long time.

I haven't been out there since September....and won't be back until the week after next. :) (Its a 2-3 times year regular biz stop on my "tour of duty").

Yes, 690 has been Spanish for about a year or so since new ownership took over, if memory serves. 1090 has been sports....complete with Padres baseball....for several years. They have a pretty good signal right on up the coast to a little way past Santa Barbara. They were doing just fine on my cheap little hotel clock radio in SB the last time I stayed there about 2-3 years ago.

When driving up the coast with the Padres game on, Jerry Coleman is usually good for inventing about one entirely new usage of the English language about every ten miles or so. ;D

Interesting reversal as I remember "XTRA Sports 690" being the home of the Chargers and 1090 being spanish.

Yes Coleman is famous for his use of the English language. Many years ago I heard him say "Randy Meyers is throwing up in the bullpen".

Not much to add except that I was able to catch a station in Spanish on 1090 around 4 AM this morning. I've heard it before and from what I've been able to catch it appears to be from somewhere in Mexico. Unfortunately the station soon faded and was overpowered by KKYN Plainview TX (near Lubbock). I'll try again when I get the chance and maybe I can catch an ID.

I've never caught the 1090 Tijuana here in the midwest, but there are other stations in there with KAAY which is nowhere near as strong as it used to be. Can only catch WBAL at sunrise or sunset before they change their pattern.

Apologies for going off topic, but then there was the time in Quebec I was listening to the French broadcast (CKAC?) of a Cubs-Expos game with Steve "The human rain delay" Trachsel pitching. That was PAINFUL!

Listening to the cubs in any language is painful. ;D

Checking again I found no trace of the Mexican station on 1090 early this morning and the station in Plainview TX was coming in fairly strong (correct the call letters to KVOP; old habits are hard to break). Underneath was a very weak KAAY. I'm about 75 miles southeast of Dallas and basically in their southwestward null but I remember KAAY's signal being a lot stronger. It seems to have become weaker in the last decade or so.

Yeah KAAY used to blast into the Chicago area every night and now their signal at best is about half of what it used to be.
I don't know what's happened there.

Perhaps in a word what happened was "Citadel".

I think you're on to something. WLS' signal isn't what it used to be either.
