Are you sure that wasn't Mega 102.3? Or something like that?

http://www.mega102fm.com/ claims to be coming soon, what ever that will be.

Then there's the possibility that 101.3 out of Toronto has changed its name.

What's the format of this Mega you've discovered?
If it's Multicultural, you indeed have Toronto:

Hey Yez...

Believe it or not.. I was listening to Z ;) and i was passing on the outskirts of their signal... and i was gettin major stomp... it ended up being latino then a sweeper ID came on and said Mega 101 then a latin announcer speakin spanish... now I wasnt sure where it was from.. maybe some afflilliate of the Houstons Mega 101.. because when i came home I was tryin to google it.. and the only thing that was coming up as Mega 101 was the Houston radio station..... but is Skip that possible to come up towards the Grimsby area on a FM signal since its based on line of site?????

??? Did Z go down for technical maintainence when this was discovered? Odd indeed!

Well I still havent figured out the anomoly of Mega 101 as of yet.. but I will tell you this. This past Friday (Early Saturday Morning) I was sitting at my house in the Niagara Region, listening to WRIF in my driveway.. their signal was screaming though overnight. So powerful it was stomping everything out.. crystal clear! Turns out I did my research WRIF is in Detroit City MI... I have the proof to! I actually made up some video.. so if you want it Yez.. give me your email.. I will send it to you......

I didnt think FM signal could skip as far as it does.. but as i found out.. it can!

Yeah, the skip is weird.
A few years back, I expected to be picking up a rock station at 95.7FM out of Barrie Ontario.
Instead, I was able to pick up a Country station known as the pig out of...wherever it was broadcasting from...
(not sure because it was running the after midnight coast to coast program, instead of being local.)

The 95.7 playing country was WPIG in Olean NY, I used to get it here regualrly in south western ontario when the FM dial wasn't so crowded back in the early 80's. http://www.wpig.com/

It's quite likely that Houston's Mega 101 was bouncing in. I've heard south Florida FM stations several times as well. Best ever catch was hearing 91.5 KUNC from Greely/Fort Collins Colorado one day while sitting on a beach on Lake Huron. This warm muggy weather provides lots of FM DX opportunities.

Hepburn's Tropo Index will give you a good idea when and where the skip happening.

Thats a pretty awesome map!!

Seriously I thought in most cases line of site was the fm signal.... always has and will be.. But in this extrodinary case, Im pretty sure it was Mega FM in Houston... not surprising! As far as Detroit to give the readers some insight.. I was listening to a radio station 250 miles away.. and not via lake skip.... Now houston is a totally different story... thats just impressive!!!! Thanks for the maps Steve thats pretty amazing!

My most impressive skip happened years ago when I was west of Rochester. I tuned in 95.7 expecting to hear either The Pig out of Olean or 95X out of Syracuse. I heard neither. The station I heard was forecasting 90 degrees and t-storms in the middle of March. I heard them mention "Clearwater" and there is a 95.7 station in Clearwater Florida.

Indeed, FM skip is (or was) pretty strong depending on atmospheric conditions. In the early 70's, after a cold front moved thru Rochester it wasn't out of the question to pick up stations from Texas, Mississippi or other Southern stations. They would come in strong, then fade before coming back strong, and fading again. TV skip isn't out of the ordinary either. My in-laws lived in Owego, NY (outside of Binghamton) and before the advent of cable in the rural areas they had the ol' rooftop antenna. During Summer storms, WSYR-TV was frequently overridden by WEDU out of Tampa.

One Summer I was in Aurora, Ohio (before Sea World existed) and we had a tornado roll through the area. After that storm, we were getting Detroit TV stations like locals with set-top rabbit ears. The cool thing was the shows showing an hour earlier. This was 1960, you know.
