Anyone here listen to AM 700, WFAT Orange-Athol?

It's a great station, a daytime 2500 watter. I get it here right on the other side of Worcester at about 60 miles with some big antennas and a 1937 RCA 816K console, sounds like a million bucks on this radio. It plays mostly 50's and 60's but not just rock n roll, it throws country and blues and even a little jazz once in a while in the mix and their play list is quite large. I listen to it every day when I'm home and never get sick of it like most oldies stations, best part is very few commercials although I'm sure they'd appreciate a few more. If you can pick it up it's well worth the listen.

I listen on-line from time to time. Great station with a very deep playlist! Unfortunately I don't think they're getting advertising support from the Athol-Orange business community. IMHO, the reason being is that it is on the AM dial skewing to the older demos plus I think that entire area is still struggling economically.

I've listened too and while they are good....when daylight savings time ends....they go off air earlier and on air later. Used to work at a daytimer in Milford, CT. Strange signing on at 7am in the morning. Yea...they are good.

UPDATE.....with my GE SuperRadio away from the house in the yard, I can hear 700 in Pittsfield, MA. Good enough to listen to on the deck. Scratchy and a bit noisy but its there. GE radio is the best.

WFAT AM 700 - Future in doubt.

Bad news for WFAT 700 listeners - their website is announcing that they will be shutting down their current format at the end of the month unless they get more advertisers. Hopefully some advertising $$$ will appear - they have a unique and enjoyable sound.

Completely expected. A museum-like format of ancient pop, soul and country music is unsellable -- as well as unlistenable to more than a hundred or so (perhaps a generous estimate) old-timers with very eclectic tastes and eccentric musical completists and chart geeks.

Yes it's a great station, I listen to it a lot, I've even donated money to them a few times in the past. there's not many places you can listen to good music anymore, you can get homogenized country or you can get computer generated dance music or classic rock which is good except for the tiny play lists or you can listen to a station like WFAT who play many classic rock n roll, country and blues tunes mostly from the 50's and early 60's. WFAT gets my vote. I do have a very eclectic taste, I'm lucky I grew up during the 60's when radio itself was eclectic, you'd hear Frank Sinatra, The Beatles, Chuck Berry and Conway Twitty right after each other. I'm not an old timer though.

If they are dropping the format of WFAT to simulcast WXRV and already have an FM that will also flip to a simulcast, why would they need a translator. Will we see a sale of the translator or a move elsewhere?

Same here and I just sent them a note asking if they were going to flip the format or stay with the mostly 50's stuff they're doing now saying I hope they keep the present format, so we'll see what's up.

That this format could be picked up by a second station is a true wonder. Maybe its classic country content will attract a few more advertisers in east Tennessee than it does in western Massachusetts, but still, it's music for 65+. How can either station make a go of it?

There's no shortage of country, old and new, in Knoxville. With the limited signal WKCE has (even with the translator), there are only so many geeks and collectors who'll listen to a lot of unknown early 60s songs (though it seems they've worked on the playlist a little>). A more standard oldies format may give them older demos, but more listeners. Like any other medium sized city, a lot of people who are here now weren't born and raised here.

Was just up Athol way last weekend. WFAT still pumping out the early rock 'n' roll and classic country. No commercials to be heard. How are they staying in business?
