Anyone hiring in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area?

My wife's job is resulting in a relocation for us to the DFW area. Now it's time for me to find employment.
I have more than 15 years experience in the industry, mostly in the creative services arena (production, copywriting, imaging, etc), but I've also done some on-air stuff, sports, news, traffic and continuity - basically everything except sales and programming. So if anyone is hiring or anyone knows about anything available right now, I'd really appreciate the info.
Thanks.

Absolutely! I know of several wonderful and experienced known-name radio folks working for Home Depot, Garden Ridge, Nordstrom's and similar. I'm sure each of those will soon be hiring for Christmas help. Me, I recently put in an application for seasonal work at Target.

National unemployment numbers may be around 10%, but DFW radio unemployment numbers have got to be around 70%. If you don't know someone on the inside, your chances to work in local radio are slim to none. (I promise that anyone still working in the biz has a Rolodex of several dozen "friends" he's been asked by to look out for a opening.) Best bet is to do freelance production and/or voiceover work (like there's no competition there) or throw together a mobile DJ company--quickly--for the holiday party season. If you want to work for free, just to stay on the air and keep the pipes warmed up, I can give you a couple of leads for that.

Sorry, Mike, but Target has standards.
Only saving grace is that I worked there before in the 80s! I'm grandfathered in. Hope the red vest still fits.

It's a little more casual there now Mike, red polo shirt and khaki slacks. Thing is can you fit in with the faux designer stuff they sell in housewares?

Mike, you actually have to ride the bike, not just assemble it and use it for a clothes rack in the corner of the room!

Well, I just heard local talk show host Mark Davis on WBAP (or "BAP" as he likes to call it) talking about careers in radio.. ahh, weirdly, Mark said that the average salary for someone working in "Medium Market Radio" was around $100,000 per year AND that the average salary for someone working in "Major Market Radio" was about $300,000 per year.

I have just opened a separate discussion on the DFW board to take the pulse of any radio professional who has survived consolidation to this point. Is this realistic in 2011?

But to answer your specific question concerning job availability in Dallas/Ft Worth radio, I would guess from the comments of one of the most popular local talkers that radio jobs are not only plentiful, but that there is such a shortage in supply of qualified broadcasters that the demand for radio pro's will command average salaries in the neighborhood of $300k per annum in DFW, a Top-10, and therefore "Major Market Radio".

I don't see many hiring but I sure see a lot of firing lately. I'd do like most others these days an abandon your quest to get into radio. Unless you want to do small market (working for locals) or work for a non-comm, your best is to not walk but RUN from a "carreer" in this business. Honestly, people that work at a insurance agency might be having more fun that people stuck at corporate radio where it's all liner cards and shut-up-and-do-what-your-told radio while worrying if the next "round" is going to elimnate your job. The suits keep digging themselves a deeper hole...

Sadly, I have to agree with Mike. It's a sad state of affairs, but you'll make more at a retail grunt job that radio in most instances. And if ya' can't find employment there, heck, TWC will pay you every two weeks, and it's GUARANTEED. That's even BETTER than some of the broadcast outlets..

Thank goodness for my little piddly a** PT job that I currently have.....

Signed, another guy out of the biz for the last (going on) 7 years...

Hey Mic....

(First, please accept my thanks for the kind words in your unfortunate email...But...)

But...Please don't let a difference of opinion become a baseless, ill-advised, and ultimately unsuccessful attempt at character assassination...

(Be a Pro...Don't complain, compete.)

The record is clear, nationally and most certainly locally, Salem Communications is the last, best hope for real Broadcasting...and real Broadcasters.

The easy answer to this is no. I recently graduated from Texas State University with a degree in Mass Communication with a focus in Electronic Media and have applied at Cumulus, Capstar, Clear Channel, Univision, etc and have fielded no luck. Not even internship applications have garnered any interviews. I've started looking for a career in sales. I would suggest you do the same.
