Anyone know this story?

I remember hearing this sometime back on KRBE's New Music Zone. I believe it was Ryan Chase that told this too because he had just gotten a request. It was about a local jock that was killed after someone called in requesting to hear some Depeche Mode. The jock gave the caller a hard time and refused to play any. Always wondered who he was talking about? Thinking about it the only other local station that could have been playing Depeche Mode was 93Q. Anyone know anything about this and who he was talking about?

Wasn't 96.5 still Energy back in those days or had they Mixed already?

Energy was mixed in the summer of 1990, but it could have been either of the three depending on when it happened.

A KRBE air personality named K.C. Love was murdered some years ago...I recall she was on their air in the late 80's during the "Power 104" days. Don't really recall any of the particulars; must have been over 15 years ago.

That I remember... but she was murdered by her boyfriend. That was in Feb of 1988. I remember them announcing it and talking about it on the air. That didn't happen the station.

WOW...ENERGY 96.5....Thats a name i havent heard in years...i worked there from april 1989 all the way thru the change over to Mix 96.5 until i left there in oct 1992...i was given the name jammin johnny "O" when i worked mornings for Energy 96.5 then almost a yr later nationwide bought the station and we became Mix 96.5 and i was Jordan Mix there working under Guy Zapoleon...i do remember us playing depeche mode on a show we called alternative static while the transistion from energy to mix was going on but i dont recall a dj being killed over that so not sure either...i do however remember the kacey love story and she was a good friend of mine and it was real sad that happened to her...

ALTERNATIVE STATIC that was one of my favorite shows on Energy. I made it a point to tune in and listen every weekday night except Friday because of the Decadance broadcast... then of course I was tuned to Energy for the Decadance and Dangerous Disco shows (Whatever happened to DJ Justin Sane and Ehab?). I have tapes of all that stuff. Even the last Alt Static and Decadance/Dangerous Disco shows. I loved 93Q but they ruined the AS show and they played the same songs EVERY night. Have tapes of those shows too.

I have been unable to find any mention on Google or alltheweb.com. You mean nothing in the world happened before 1989?

Correct.

not sure what happened to justin but i remember the Energy days very well...the lineup on air was
5:30am-9am-Jammin Johnny O-(that was me the real chris allen from 93Q)
9am-3pm-alicia kay-(the queen of the energy scene)
3pm-7pm-jeff scott
7pm-midnight-paco lopez

then when energy was sold i did alternative static at night with our music director geno pearson and alternative static turned into a monstor and for a while energy started playing only an alternative format and our top of the hour was..."Energy 96.5 KNRJ HOUSTON, No Kids, No Rap, No Crap and that format lasted until the station went dark for a few days while we prepared to launch Mix 96.5

Your real name wouldn't be Shelby would it?
I used to know a guy who had a bunch of old Energy tapes.
Would you be willing to make some sort of deal for copies of some of those tapes?

Yup! I even have tape of the clock ticking. There was a period during that where you all were playing sound effects as the clock was going. So I popped in a tape just in case something happened. I got up at 6 am that Friday morning hoping for something big... even recorded the last hour of ticking through the launch. I was not happy when I heard "Roll with It" by Steve Winwood.

No I'm not Shelby... but if he still has any of those tapes, I need to find out how to reach him.
Do you have any Houston radio recordings to trade?

I have a few things from the old Rock 101, Power 104, 93Q, Energy, and some Rocket 107.5 that I got from radio emporium site.
The launch of 93Q is included in that.
I also have the final hours of Rock 101 although most of that is W&J reruns.
I've got the sign off of KRTS and the sign on of Rock 97.5 KIOL.
I think the only other thing I have is the Kurt Cobain tribute that ran on 104 the night of his death, although that has little to do with actualy Houston Radio.
If you're interested in anything, let me know and we can work something out.

My e-mail address is in my profile.

energy 96.5

Yeah,

I miss those days of Alt. Static. That was a lot of fun. It played Alt. tunes before it became popular to do so. I only think there were a handful of stations doing that at the time in the U.S. KROQ, Live 105, WHFS and a couple more. It would have been great if it lasted for longer than a few months.
