Anyone know why these Lubbock stations are switching.

Ramar has been running spots on their TV outlets promoting Stars104-3 moving to sister station Hot97-3 frequency and vice-versa effective March 30. Anyone know what prompted that decision?

That was the plan when 97.3 first moved into Lubbock. However, they ended that plan after a plane crash took down 97.3's tower.

Who has the better signal? Hot 104.3 and 104.9 The Beat....... I smell drama.....

There is a 104.3 licensed to Borger that serves Amarillo. That's KQFX (the former KDXR). KLZK 104.3 is licensed to Brownfield and serves Lubbock. They're sandwiched together about as close as possible. KQFX is a C1 while KLZK is a C2.

RAMAR got their application for 97.3 approved. They have a Construction Permit to change the City of License on 97.3 from Plainview to New Deal and to use their new tower at 98th & University as the tower for 97.3. Basically, it puts 97.3 on almost-equal footing with the other Lubbock FMs in terms of signal strength within the city. 97.3, ever since they moved to Petersburg, has had issues with being overpowered by the in-city FMs on car and tabletop stereos. Part of this was because they originally had to have a null towards Lubbock. This is a move to fix all of these issues. However, since RAMAR has to account for a vacant Denver City FM allocation, the New Deal version of 97.3 has to be directional and miss Brownfield (60db Countour): http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/FMTV-service-area?x=FM1210949.html I don't think this will be a huge deal since there isn't a Denver City station potentially interferring with the signal in the outskirts.

Compare that with 104.3's current coverage: http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/FMTV-service-area?x=FM402207.html

Basically this is a move to get their better money-making FM format on the best signal within Lubbock.

The irony in all of this was that all of the money spent on the Petersburg tower for 97.3 is wasted. Hopefully, they were able to still use their transmitter, but the cost of building that tower twice (don't forget the crop duster crash by the uncle of a certain sports-guy in town [ OH MYYYYYYYYYYYYY! ] ) is basically for nothing.

It will be interesting to see if all of these moves and posturing pay off for RAMAR, or if it will be more lipstick on a pig.

Are they really switching? I haven't heard any promos about the switch be played on both stations.

Which TV station could I see the promos on? Fox 34 I assume?

It is interesting that with 104.3 going back to CHR, there will be two similar stations directly adjacent to each other, 104.3 and 104.9.

A little after 12 the switch was officially made (right in the middle of playing a song too).

Something else to note is that Hot is now using the slogan: "Lubbock's Hottest Hits" instead of "#1 for Hip-hop R&B y mas!"

Does this mean no more Reggaeton on Hot 104-3?

It also appears 97.3 is broadcasting from 98th & University...... On my analog clock radio 97.3 now comes in just fine in between KLLL and KOOL 98.

It would seem to appear that way, they also changed voice aritists (Ed McMahon? Jay Beau Jones?), sounds more CHR'sh.

Got the switch on tape (both stations), but yup, in the middle of the song.

I also did notice 97.3's signal is stronger now. What suprised me was that they changed 104.3's call letters to KSTQ, I think 104.3's been KLZK forever! I didn't catch 97.3's new call letters at 1 AM. Did they move KLZK over or something else?

97.3's tower did move to 98th/university and is licensed to New Deal. It is a much stronger signal in the city, however, you can't listen to it nearly as far outside of town as you could before. You will start to lose the signal going down 114 when you get to around Crosbyton. I used to be able to listen to 97.3 at least all the way to Guthrie. But they did downgrade to 32,000 watts and a Class C2 station.

Another side note: I am liking the promos that HOT plays between songs on 104.3. They have a new voice guy and everything. The promos they did back on 97.3 made me want to change the station because they were so annoying.
