Anyone know!

does anyone know where i can find a map....of stations that cover san diego but are actualy in Mexico??

Tijuana and San Diego are one market, with an imaginary line between them. Just look at the antenna height and power and you can see what each one does. The A's that are running as "real A's" (meaing, they do not have higher than licensed power) will cover just like an A anywhere else... all the FM sites except 107.7 are on the hill / mountain overlooking the border, and even the A's cover about to downtown SD. Tijuana has C's instead of Bs and most are at about 300 meters height... the ones that have 100 kw cover the market as well as the full SD B's.

Interestingly, before Arbitron exited Mexico, they were considering a combined Tijuana / SD book.

ok for example XOCL-FM will it cover the entire san diego market?? solid coverage?

No. XHOCL does not do well in North County, as it is not a full 100 kw C; it runs (apparently one of the legal ones), and is listed by the SCT, as 30 kw. The signal in Encinitas, Vista, etc., is not "usable." It is at 328 meters, but the power vs. distance to the northern part of the market is limited.

so is XOCL-FM considered a cc station? my guess is that its owned by MVS.... how about market size.. im trying to get a buddy of mine on another station in that same market but im not sure what the pay is like in market 17 since ive never been their and dont belive he has either... my guess is that its almost as expensive as LA or san fransisco...could a dj make it with maybe 40-60k

Clear Channel did the equivalent of an LMA with XHOCL, but with the "new rules" they were over quota in the San Diego market (they own 7 local stations, plus KFI puts enough signal in SD to be attributable to the SD market, too putting them at the maximum of 8 stations) and had to get rid of the agreements with two Mexican stations. In Mexico, an LMA is called a "sales and programming rights" arrangement as the license can not be foreign owned. XHOCL was sold by the license holder who LMAed it to Clear to MVS, which is an immense TV, cable, cellphone and radio company.

Pay in SD depends, like anywhere, on station, daypart, and a bunch of other factors. Salary ranges are more like San Antonio than like LA. Spanish language local talent can get from $25 up to around $100 k. Unknown talent is going to be at the bottom of that range.

WOULD YOU SAY A DJ CAN SURVIVE WITH 45K A YEAR IN THIS MARKET? Is it a good market to jump to a bigger market... in other words is it a good stepping stone? Im not sure i want to recommend this market after all!./

it probably depends on what you mean by survive.

If you can add a bunch of talent fees for appearances and spots that can certainly help.

I know a host that makes more money in "personal appearance fees" than the salary. He is on one of the top stations in the morning. (No, it's not Randy T. Hoag or Bromo)

Telling me if the personal appearance money wasn't there .... in a box by the I-5 off-ramp with a sign, "Homeless DJ will voice for food".

yeah but will the really apply for a spanish dj? I mean it seems san diego is jammed with spanish stations is their good talent fee money for these guys?

Is that Scot Tempesta :D :D :D

Scot does very well. He is doing good -- except he is not in radio.

Also, that's Scot with one "T"

Thats actually pretty typical in many markets. The radio job is the key to making the bigger money in talent fees. Many stations will dangle that carrot in front of potential air talent, offering a modest salary but opening the door to the air talent making bigger dollars outside the station.

An apartment in that range will come with cockroaches and a guarantee that your car windows will get smashed in on a regular basis

While I was PD of KLQV, many of our staff worked in downtown, but lived in Tijuana and took the trolley right from the station to the border. On the other side, very nice residences and aprartments were available for $300 or so, and domestic help was availble and the cost of livig was much lower and the "luxury level" much higher.

Of course, it helps to speek spanish.

but how many years ago are we talking about? but awsome observation David E.. let me ask you somthing else rumos has it that la mejor brand me soon be in many markets you think they will be local talents or will mvs try to sindicate all of the programming?

A great endorsement of our corner in the U.S. I don't think that is the case, however your results may vary and smashed windows may make more noise in your 'hood.

To echo David E.'s comment, there are great places to live in TJ; and I know of folks that I work with that live there in the $500 range. The downside is living in another country and sometimes the border entry to and from Mexico is very lengthly.

Of course, we need to watch this subject matter as certain microcops will be upset that the target has shifted.
