Tubby is doing just what is crowd wants. You may not like classic country but Tubby does a great show. I think all jocks need to listen to him and learn to give the listener what they want. Know your listener! Any thoughts?

I have said for a long time that Tubby is a great Air Personality and if not for his show the station would not enjoy even half the ratings it does today. The sad part is Cox never added any more Air Personalities, and that is what Classic Country needs, the rest of the day or night.

From the sounds of things it looks like Cumulus may be pulling a Cox with KIOL and the entire air staff has been hired, leaving over 50% of the week a jutebox and another reason to flip this station off and go for the Satellite radio. KIOL is broadcasting in HD-Radio or IBOC, but does any one own a receiver in Houston?

Almost every thing comes back to Cumulus....it's kind of like 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon!

Since you brought it up Mike, I guess I will throw my two pennies in the fountain. This is not directed at you....these are just general gripes!

It's my opinion that Cumulus/KIOL/KFNC are broke. With all the money they spent on air talent alone, they have to be. The air talent alone is probably costing them over a million a year at least, both stations. You don't bring in the big guns without paying the price and who knows how long it will take to turn it around and get in the black on the figures. They should have hired some hot young talent...paid them less and started fresh. Then they would have DJ's 24/7. Instead, they have these overpriced seasoned DJ's that are not that good, at least for the money they are getting paid. And if everyone loves these DJ's so much, then I think it would have shown in the ratings.

Cumulus hasn't a clue how to play in the big city yet...and time will tell if both of these stations are on the air in the near future.

And on another note....I'm getting real sick and tired of KIOL playing the pity card. I think their liars when they say that it's the people that brought the rock back to Houston. It's a nice sales pitch, but I'm not buying it. Their trying to suck in anyone that will believe them. It's like the Jim Jones of radio. The call letters should have been KULT!

I also believe that if your gonna play with the big boys, then you come out of the gate ready to run. This idea of being patience with them is total bullshit.
These stations are what they are and I don't see how they can get better. I believe you have one shot, and if you don't take advantage of it, then your screwed.Cumulus doesn't have a clue and Pat Fant can only do what he can with money that is available, even though Pat Fant is not making some good decisions.

If any of you on this board think that KIOL/KFNC is good radio, then I give up on the whole thing. This stuff is pathetic. Maybe these stations would be good in a small market, but this is the 7th, soon to be the 6TH MARKET OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. It's is so totally unbelievable that this stuff is spewing out of any radio in Houston TX. and that doesn't even take in account the signal problems.

Clear Channel maybe evil, but at least they are the professional evil....and I will take that anyday over some half-ass, lousy stations that are programmed worst than a college station with student DJ's.

And speaking of that, it's pretty sad when a station like KACC is a million times better than that of the second largest radio company owner in the nation.

And since I'm going off, I guess I will talk about the imaging as well. From what I can tell, this guy Fletch is doing the production work....promotional spots and so forth. He sounds alright, but the audio quality of their production sounds again like a bad college station. Just to compare, listen to the other stations in town....C.C,COX,ETC.... Their spots sounds tremendous audio wise, and KIOL's sound like they were recorded on a cart machine. It sounds horrible. And don't get me started on the imaging guy. UNBELIEVABLE! I guess Fletch has nothing to with that.

This thing is going to implode on itself and I will be there.......laughing!

I could write a whole book on this. Stop the insanity!

I've tried to stay quiet about KIOL/KFNC because I wanted to support the stations. I still do, but I have to say I find myself listening less and less to KIOL. I also still have 97.5 as a preset but I do not think it will last. That spot may be awarded to 95.7 KHJZ. If KIOL doesn't shape up soon, it's preset may go back to KACC. (I love KACC, but it just doesn't come in very well where I am...but it's worth having as a preset).

Anyway, I was happy when W&J, Outlaw Dave, and even Wendy Miller got back on in Houston radio. I know none of them personally (as I know no Houston DJs personally), but I really enjoyed their shows/styles on KLOL Rock 101.

Problem is-it feels like KIOL was created solely to give those people their jobs back. Are there any other jocks on the station that aren't KLOL refugees?

Again, that's great that they are employed again, but it does not seem like KIOL was created to entertain Houston listeners. We really didn't need another "classic rock" station. I say that, and I am someone who actually likes classic rock. I know they are trying to play some currents, but there is nothing that can't be heard on KHMX or KTBZ. I'm not even very impressed with the classic rock I am hearing. I think KKRW has a much deeper library and does a better job with the music (not to mention its better signal).

I really didn't want to complain about these new stations. I just don't see how they can last the way they are. Unless the DJs are working for much less $, Cumulus must be losing money fast on these.

I am still really happy that Walton & Johnson are back on. I still enjoy their show, but I've been listening to it a more sparingly than before. This is partly because of signal issues I have at times in the car. Mainly though, it's because I don't want to get too attached to their show (as I did when it was on 101), only to have it pulled again when KIOL 103.7 flips. I really hate saying that.

The call letters are still annoying me too...that's why I've put the frequencies because it seems confusing referring to KLOL and KIOL in the same paragraph.

I haven't listened to KFNC enough to comment, but when I did, it seems like it was just banter between the people on-air. I don't recall hearing any news. I've really only listened to them very, very briefly.

Shortwave, I do not take any of what you wrote personally. I don't feel like digging through for old posts of mine, but with the exception of Cumulus being broke and comments on Production and Imaging since Fletch started Monday, I have agreed with and writen about everything you stated above. Fletch was hired for Production and Imaging.

I would not be surprised if KIOL/KFNC doesn't have over $3M tied up in saleries for on air personalities. Cumulus made the fatal mistake of coming on the air with KFNC half assed and you CAN NOT get away with that on a News-Talk station.

I would like to see both stations succeed, but I think KFNC has already done themselves in the first week, regardless of the signal. KIOL may have some hope but Cumulus is going to have to cough up more money, get their shitt together and do it fast, they do not have much time either.

KFNC and KIOL are not good radio, KIOL may be poor radio and okay for market 666, but not the unofficial number 6 market. The problem is there is not a great station in Houston and damn few good ones. KXYZ BizRadio1320 is probably the best produced station in the city and they also came on the air prepared and ready to get down to business the first day. Until or if Houston gets a great radio station again, we are going to continue to have crap because the standard for radio has fallen so low in Houston it is hard to believe.
